STEVE HILLAGE Check him out for the new year Rob. I think you'll dig him. He was doing the nineties stuff in the sixties and seventies. His first album with the band Kahn, in the late sixties, was way ahead of it's time, he was only 17 years old. His solo stuff in the seventies is awesome too. He is the best guitarist that nobody ever knows about.

don't worry, its still worlds and leaps better than anything any of us used ten or fifteen years ago when we were broke. oh the pure shit of amps i had to go through untill I got my first line 6 POD and just plugged into the hifi... Compared to these abysmal things the mustang is absolutely fine.
"Has anyone ever used this for anything?" **proceeds to play a sick riff**
The most important part of this video is you’re acknowledging the fact that we need to rock out with what we have! As guitarist, we get too hung up on the latest gear, the latest gadget, the latest whatever- Rock out with what you have! Focus on your playing and your creativity!

@@rec99cts27 Thanks to the Internet and websites like Reverb in particular it’s even harder to keep from focusing on the next new piece of gear. It was so much easier back in the 80s when I started playing. You only had a couple of places in your town or a nearby town that sold guitars and their inventory did not change much. On the plus side, the Internet has enabled the creation of so many different platforms that allow us learn and market the music that we create.

@@charlesbolton8471 I started playing guitar in the past 5 years so the internet was foundational to my learning anything about the gear and the theory behind the instrument knowing I wouldn't get instant gratification I kept learning and using the internet to further my education on all topics so yeah the internet is great for learning and keeping me updated on the latest gear ! All I have to say is don't believe the hype of the newest gear being pushed by KZread guitar players ! Use whatever you've got, it can't be that bad.
The amp on top of the other amp is like my parents putting a TV on top of the broken TV that looks like a piece of furnature. They never got rid of the broken TV, they used it as a stand.

My 60" flat screen is perched on an old Sylvania TV/Stereo combo. The stereo still works after about 60 years.
I keep a little Mustang II in my office and I love that little guy. For noodling quietly with a pretty decent sound, it's pretty great for getting one sound at a time quickly and good enough to get you in the ballpark of where you want to be. It's the perfect little buddy to practice with when you want to keep the volume down and inspiration up!
Dude, what a great message to any novice guitarist out there, always respecting your possitivity :D Happy New Year man
The Fender Mustang was the first amp I had, then I got a Peavey Transtube Studio Pro, then a Boss Katana 50 MKI. After that my wife supported my habit and she got me the Spark Amp for my birthday, the first new amp I had. I sold everything else and used that money to grab a new Boss Katana 100 MKII. Thanks for the vids Robert, keep up the great work and I look forward to more in 2021. Have a happy and prosperous New Year! Cheers
All the best for the new year man . Keep up the great work.
Well said Robert. It's all too easy to get side tracked searching for the perfect piece of gear or elusive tone, when really, the goal is to create music and have fun! Hope the new year brings you a lot enjoyment.
I can’t remember if I discovered your channel in 2020 but it’s been a big part of my year. My dad died this year and he left me some guitars so I’ve been connecting with him through getting back into playing. You’ve been a huge inspiration and encouragement so thanks for being there. Happy New Year!
"Back in the day" I used to run my guitar into a tape deck mic jack and through a stereo receiver. ( Before I even owned an amp) If you cranked up the gain you could get some fuzz. ( until I learned that was very bad for the stereo's preamp :( After I got my first distortion pedal I could get a rock sound without blowing up my stereo. I could even record tracks and overdub :)

No way! I totally did the same thing! My parents bought me a cheap sears radio/record player/double casette player the when I was like 7 or something. Totally just dated myself there. .... .... anyway a few years later I traded my middle school band trumpet for a super cheap guitar with still to this day the worst action I’ve ever seen. I got totally ripped off, and didn’t care. I was stoked to have an electric guitar.... I didn’t have an amp of course. However the stereo came with this super cheap mike. If you hit record and pause you could hear yourself sing. So I put 2 and 2 together and at the risk of being grounded, I cut the mike wire and a guitar cable, spliced them together, and plugged it in with an old dod distortion pedal in front of it. It had a stereo EQ that was pretty good actually, you could make it sound pretty good for a cheap system. I’m not joking, i got some pretty cool sounds with the rig at conversation level or slightly louder. It worked good enough to keep my playing and practicing for hours. So that was totally cool for old vintage equipment for a lower middle class family in small town USA. love to have that thing now though just to see IF memory serves me.

Did the same thing waaayyyy long ago with an ancient sony reel to reel using the mike input. That lasted till I got a Peavy backstage 30. No reverb, no nothing. saved to get a Boss ds-1 distortion pedal. Now I was in the big leagues lol. Looking back, it seamed like a struggle to get to where I was good enough to upgrade step by step over the early years of playing. My Dad encouraged me and payed for lessons, but wasn't about to spring for a 100 watt plexi. That mustang would only be something I could dream of for a long while.

@@brianolson_music That’s right, I forgot, you had to hit record with the pause button pressed for it to work. It was an old belt drive deck, so I’m pretty sure my hours of fun did a number on those, too😏

Such encouragement. I really need to get back into your course and learn. Playing a minor is fun and all, but I can't even play chords over it...
The head version of that amp (Mustang V) is an underrated amp in my opinion. Fantastic cleans, effects, and it takes pedals really well. I use it for my pedalboard platform and I am able to get a really great tone.

My Mustang III V2 gets it done perfectly well. I’ve been digging my Tweed Bassman patch a lot lately. I’ve got a Mustang 1 with a speaker jack I wired into it through a home brew 1x12 that’s my beater garage rig. Sounds pretty damned good with a bigger speaker.
This video really proves that you don’t need tons of gear to sound good as well! I really enjoyed this video, dude! Got a different feel to it which was nice! Happy newyear to you and your family btw!

I love that second (or third lol) mirrored monitor u have over by your amp heads. Very smart placement
This video was sooo much in the spirit of Five Watt World. I love the mentallity of getting the most out of what you have got. I have wasted soo much time in the studio because People didnt have the right things or didnt feel like trying to work with what we had. But the same People liked to brag on Facebook about how cool things was in the Making. For me, its more fun showing what you made with nothing, rather than promising what you can make, once the gear arrives. Happy Newyear 😊

As you can clearly see, i wrote "This video" 😉 But Nice try
My first recording setup was the headphone out of my Peavey Audition Chorus into the aux input of my Radio Shack dual cassette stereo system. It didn't sound great, but it captured the ideas and I was able to do them much better latet when I borrowed a Tascam PortaStudio four-track cassette machine. Always do what you can with what you have, the ideas are more important than the recording quality.
I worked at a music store when those came out and they were amazing for the money. I preferred them over line 6, vox, and boss/Roland beginner amps. Super easy to make a killer tone!
My first modeling amp. Still have it, still love it. Thanks Robert, nice to know I can record with it also.
Love the top on that PRS 😍. Happy New Year when it comes, from sunny Scotland.

Nice. I've played a cube 15 since 2009. Still have it. I bought a 70's ELK FS-40 from a surplus shop. Still being repaired :)
I’m using my Fender G-DEC, a mic, ipod & iphone for recording. I like the simple way!!! Happy New Year, Robert!! 🎊🎊🎶👏🏻
Wife and I traveled to Palm Springs just before the shut down. Rented a house. So I rented a guitar and an amp from the local Guitar Center for the week. Guitar was a telecaster and the amp was a Mustang! The Mustang was perfect, exactly what I needed to practice. Actually came up with 2 new tunes while there. Fond memories.
MORE GEORGE LYNCH ERA DOKKEN . PLEASE ROBERT JUST CRUSHING LYNCH RIFFS AND SOLOS !!!
I loved my Fender Mustang 3 100 watts with a celestion "fender" version. It sounded legit mic'd.
have a great new year Robert!
I have the Mustang IV. A 150 watt 2 x12 is waaaay too big for my little office, but I love it! I have other, more appropriately sized amps now, but my big 'ol Mustang isn't going anywhere!
I still have my version one that I bought brand new. The cleans are pretty good on it but the Marshall and overdriven amps sound pretty bad but of course you made it sound great Still a fun amp to noodle on. Have a Happy New Year Robert 😃👍
From Leo: Good video Robert, and many wise words. There is so much really usable gear sitting in closets and basements like that amp. Newer players get too worried and stressed about gear that they cannot get. The built in effects on even entry level amps give you a lot of ways to learn. Even if all a player has is a Squier and an amp with a single volume and single tone control, rock it!
This version of the Fender Mustang was my first amp! Used it for 2 and a half years and I upgraded to a Fender Bassbreaker combo last month. I actually got pretty decent tones out of the little guy and mic'd it up for my Instagram posts, of course, I did have a Green Rhino overdrive in front too so that helped.
Sound awesome. Im learning that the tone really is in the hands.!
I'm still using a Mustang 1 from 2011. You can record for the USB directly too. It's a good amp for home. I use the Fender Fuse software to program my own patches.
Happy New Year Robert! May 2021 be a better year for us all! :-)
Good luck Robert and family have a happy safe and healthy 2021 from Australia. Angelina and Kimball
I actually have that exact amp I keep at my away from home terminal locker so I can play at the hotel. I did some editing on the home PC to get something close to my actual Tweed Deluxe and Bassman. It doesn’t sound bad at all, especially for the $80 I spent on it when it was brand new 5 years ago.
My first and only amp was an old 90s Crate 10 watt with clean and overdrive channels that you had to switch on the amp, no foot switch. I’m thankful for iPad apps and a plug in interface. Now I can play any amp, pedal and speaker combination without taking so much space.
I love my Fender Mustang and usually keep it on the Fender Twin sound and set up my rig as a wet dry with a tube amp. It sounds awesome
Well done Brother! Thank you so much for All You Shared this past Year! Happy New Year to All!
I have a Marshall JCM2000 half stack as a live rig, but I use the Mustang IV 2x12 for practice, and until recently, recording too. I run a USB cable direct from the USB out socket on the amp's control panel straight to the PC and record with Reaper. Works fine and you can still hear the guitar through the speakers. It does take a bit of fiddling to connect the signal to Reaper, and the sound you get is the raw signal without the tone from the cab, but it does work. Additionally I run a cable from the headphone socket on the PC to the AUX socket on the amp. That lets me hear the playback through the amp, or headphones if I plug them in. Cant see why it wouldn't work on the smaller amp...give it a try?
Not that bad. Happy New Year Rob.
Happy New Year Robert and to all the other viewers. My guitar community is a peaceful place where everybody is all about the music. That and knocking those sneaky boxes out of the way! Next guitar I’m chopping the heck outta that box!!
I myself used to run through 80's analog fuel tape deck then through stereo reciever to amplify an I you pause an record it would boost signal an distort ...I loved it than but it was inspirational at the moment an made me want to play more ..I think the final thought here is inspiring sounds ...plus I heard a story when I was young talking about the reference you made about needing certain gear..as story goes Eric Clapton did a guest appearance an had to plug into a squire strat plugged in to a practice amp an slaved the head to house PA.. an sounded awesome..it was all on the spot he had no intention of playing but when asked to play that's what they had on hand ..An he did it with a smile
Ha! Nice ADA-MP1 in your rack there 2:35. I sold mine to a buddy years ago.
Harmony 410a given to me early 70's. Despite now shredded Tolex and rope handle little tone monster. Love the show, thanks.
I had one of these for a long time, before I really got into gear. My bank account was much better back then, haha. Rock with what you got!
My first amp that was fully mine was a Roland Cube-30. It still sounds good, but I also added a speaker bypass jack so I can also use it as a small cab for my Joyo Atomic amp.
I have a Mustang I v1 and a v2. I use them as late night practice amps. I bought the v2 because the headphones and aux in jacks are starting to go out on the v1. They are good to jam along with songs because if you engage the chorus setting it's in stereo through the headphones which blends well when jamming to songs. I think you could record the amp via it's USB but I don't think the software/driver to do it is available any more. It sounds good enough for a practice amp.
I have that exact amp. I bought it with my first squire stratocaster. I quickly replaced it but it was great for getting started.
My first amp was the same model. I had a lot of fun with it for a few years and passed it on to my nephew. Great starter amp at the time.
That's hilarious I have a Fender G-Dec that I keep at work for lunch time. Same problem with the knows but I found out of I just leave the amp on for a couple hours and come back the knobs work fine.
I had that same amp... You can also connect the USB interface to your PC and the amp registers to windows as a microphone. Then record on your PC through any recording application. Don't even need the fuse sw that is no longer available
I got a Mustang for a present from the pops. I’m a tube guy, but I dialed in a tone that works on one preset and saved it. It’s definitely a rockable little amp!
Have a great new year folks , that little amp sounds pritty dang good , its probly robert's pickin that make it sound great ..👍
My first recording rig was a boombox. I played a Lyle Stray copy through a Gorilla Amp, with a Dunlop Wah, an MXR Distortion +, and a Peavey Chorus between them. My cousin and I recorded an instrumental "album" of originals on a cassette tape. We got the "levels 'right'" by moving the boombox around until the Bass and Mic weren't overloading. Hit record, and don't mess up. It sounded pretty good for what it was. We were in 8th grade at the time, '87-'88, so we had to make do.
I love my mustang v, but if you don't mind the latency you can record out through the usb too. You have to locate the correct driver in the daw. Ive also used the headphone out to go directly into the mic input on the CPU in the past.
I was expecting to see you butcher the end off a cable & splice into the speaker wires. Happy New Year!
I love the message on this video. I started recording myself at 14 by plugging my cheap Behringer V-Amp multi fx (POD copy) into the mic input of my PC, recording to Audacity, wrote songs, made demos, eventually started a band that played those songs live and in recorded in a real studio, and it all started in my room with less than $100 worth of gear
Love to everyone over the holiday. Here's to 2021.
I had one of those. It was awesome, except the speaker and the "USB interface" feature that sucked, with lots of latency. By the way, cool Kee Marcelo's lick! Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹🎄
I have this amp, it's my first and only amp at the moment as I just started, great video!
its funny that you mentioned no one using that step filter effect cause I sold my mustang last year and regretted it as soon as i got home cause i used that effect in the background of one of my favorite recordings
Probably one of your best videos. Very cool
Dude, I’m rocking a Fender Champion 20. My first amp 35 years ago was a Holmes 10 watt that I bought because my last name is Holmes. My second amp was a Peavy Stereo Chorus 400. That thing was a beast. I pawned it 20 years ago when I moved across the country and it was too damn heavy to carry up the stairs to my third floor apartment. I’m thinking of using my stimulus check to buy a GTX100
Be nice to see you do this to a vox vt40+. Not the new ones the first ones that came out.
My first amp was a Fender Stage Lead 2112. The distortion pedal was the yellow digitech. That was a supercool pedal.
I have that same amp from 2011 bought it used at GC for 45 bucks a year ago. It’s worked fine but it’ll glitch and change tone out of nowhere. Definitely saving up for new one but I enjoy the twin reverb tone.
Robert, early in this video, you made the very fine point that one doesn't have to have a great deal of gear to rock out. That remark reminded me of myself as a teenager with my first guitar. Why? Because I played that sucker for the better part of two years without an amp of any kind! I actually learned a lot that way! I think I was emboldened somewhat by the fact that a solid body electric guitar makes little sound without amplification, which meant that I could keep my bad-sounding, untutored fingers from making loud, ugly, disturbing sounds. Must have worked pretty good; I'm still playin'!😎❤️️🎸‼️
Woah what a timing. I just sold mine! But i just ordered Boss Katana so i guess i'm fine!
I got one of those for $50 and I loved it for the price and mobility. Great for headphones and plugging in your phone to play along with backing tracks and songs. Sounds pretty good, versitile, definitely worth the money.
The fender mustang was my first decent amp, it sounded incredible for the price imo. Especially if you went a bit into the settings since alot of the presets were pretty meh.
Cool video happy New Year here's to 2021!
Sitting here listening to that Fender Mustang amp ... It sounds fantastic to me !!! Not usually a fan of Fender amp distortion but that one sounds great !!!
I used to use a small Gorilla amplifier back in 1986, 87, and used the same type and ran into a home stereo and could also record on cassette. It sounded awesome thru the home stereo. Ah yeah, those were the days.
The Mustang was my first “real” amp and for its size and tier, it packs a lot. I also gigged with it, we mic’ed it up and it did just fine. To this day it’s my bedroom practice amp. It’s a perfect place to start, doesn’t belong to the “worst”, nor even in the “bad” category.
Happy Newyear Guitarwizard
I have a Mustang I v2 silver edition. I loaded a few presets from Fenders website and I have used it for recording, and it actually sounds really good in the mix. It doesn’t have to be a big Marshall stack. Would I gig with it, well no, I have my Marshall for that, but for my small home recording studio, this fits the bill perfect. I got mine new a few years ago for just under $100. I am sure you could find a nice used 9ne for less.
A Robert’s vid for my birthday ! Thank u Robert, wish u best for this 20th end🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
Could you do a video on what exactly you need to easily record your guitar and what things you'd need?
I looooooove the Fender Mustang- dial it in on the desktop and BAM monster
Happy New Year 🎆🎊 🍾
Have a great New Year's Eve and a very prosperous 2021! From Puerto Rico and Arcadio Hernández. BTW I currently own a Fender G-Dec3
i dont know how many times i hit rewind for the random duck hahaha well done
I love the admittance of the airgap- re-recording methodology. Quick and dirty still works... it's just "lofi".
I had a Vox VT20x moddeling amp and i connected it directly from head phone out to computer mic in, but it made a terrible noise. Now i have a 2x12 tube amp and just bought an usb mic. I even recorded some things with my Vox headphone amp. Very compressed, but sounds ok otherwise. Also it creates a good fuzz tone if you plug it into a small speaker (like a JBL box) and turn all controls to 10.
That final effect always activated when I turn my line 6 amp to the clean setting.
Far cry from your normal sound but you still kill it !! Ripping out the Dokken !! Love it
