Hey everyone I'd like to apologise for the sound part way through the video. I was using a brand new wireless mic and it picked up some static that I didn't notice till I was editing. Working on getting a different mic or figuring out the issue with this one. There will be one more video that may have some static since I recorded two videos in one day with this one before knowing of the issue.

SAAB's best selling and most reliable models were Opel based. GM is more than Chevy. Opel is a German company that just happens to be owned by a multi national corporation based in the United States. They produce European cars engineered to meet the expectations of European buyers. Opel has produced cars in the same categories as SAAB that have outsold them by a large margin.

All the 9-3s are probably the most beautiful cars I've ever seen, finally got my driver's license about a month ago and bought a 2006 9-3 as my first car and I absolutely love it! Drove a lot of cars when practicing(VW, Nissan, Volvo, Hyundai, Scoda, Toyota) and most way newer, but nothing compares to the 9-3 or Saabs in general.

Agreed with your admission that the Money Pit item was cheap clickbait, especially since the term "money pit" is a favorite label of Scotty Kilmer when he describes virtually every car other than a Toyota or Honda. He always calls SAABs money pits and that's why I came here. Plus, at 227,000 mile ANY car could be a money pit and it wouldn't matter since the expected life of the car and its components has long since been exceeded.

Love your video. I owned a 2006 Saab 9-3 with the Luxury package. I just got rid of it earlier this year when a tree fell on it (not the car's fault). It had 177,000 miles on it and it never needed much work. I had a new alternator at 70,000 miles under warranty, the front suspension springs replaced at 140,000, and the front seat bolster at 180,000 and replaced some rubber parts in the engine bay that wore out but that was it. I had worked on it myself along with my independent Saab mechanic when I needed more major work done as I don't have a lift. I sold the car with tree damage to my mechanic, who fixed it and sold it to a family who wanted a used, reliable car. Now it has 206,000 miles and is going strong with a new owner.

That is a nice one. These cars are awesome!! Saw one for sale last summer in MI with 320k, still running great. Mine has 197k, low maint, tight and smooth car. One item popped up that affected cruise control. Return spring on the clutch pedal has a plastic part that breaks around 175k. Saggy pedal causes cruise to fail every time the pedal bounces. Easy fix. Cheap part. Both boost control vacuum valves resolved boost issues. Easy replacements.

Wow, passed 800 subscribers just before september and now you're at 1.8k! Good job. The noise your tires are making are the same as what our 9-3x is doing. Thought it might be the cupped tires, but never had it be so loud before. So at least now I feel a little better about it not being something mechanical, hopefully... Just got the vehicle, so I'm just trying to catch anything that is wrong. Which appears to be very little and it has 100k miles.

Thank you! The only folks I can thank for getting to this level are you and all the other folks that view and subscribe to my videos -- and I really appreciate it. As for the noise this time it's a cupped tire from having a bad ball joint (check your ball joints if you have this noise). Last time it was making a similar noise I replaced the wheel bearings-- however you can normally figure out a wheel bearing noise because the noise will stop when turning the wheel left or right (depending on which bearing it is).

I've put about, $2,750 into the car, mostly wear and preventative maintenance...tires, DIC, pads/rotors, struts/shocks, exhaust, valve body, fan speed resistor, heater bypass valve, 02 sensor. Oil changes every 3,000 miles...transmission fluid every 3 oil changes. The car has been an absolute pleasure. Now have 93,000 miles and believe that it is ready for another 150,000 miles.

That was interesting. However the question I’m more interested in is, are Saab models more or less a money pit than any other car, at x miles. Cost per mile or km is as under-used a metric as power:weight ratios. I believe Saab are as good as or better than any luxury car of its generation.

  • @SaabDr

    @SaabDr

    5 жыл бұрын

Yup intake valve issues presented on cold starts. It was because the edge of the valve would wear down causing sharp edges. The engine would have low compression when cold and as the valve expanded it would seal causing the issue to not present itself. The valves would also crack which is why fixing that issue up front is the best thing to do.

Your wife's car looks great and 227k (or thereabouts) miles is getting up there. I've driven a few Saabs with over 200k miles on them, but none as high as 227k. They were loaner cars from my Saab service specialist and had usually been bought by them with a high mileage on them already. Some were really excellent for their age, but your wife's car sounds better than good. My current Saab is a Laser Red 2007 9-3 Aero manual. Our specs in Australia can be different from your American specs. Mine came standard with all the usual top-of-the-line stuff including the sun roof and a Bose "premium" stereo, Bluetooth, etc. In some markets they got a Nav/GPS system. I've had a chip upgrade to Hirsch stage 1, which is the same as the 2008 Turbo X, and I've had a do88 intercooler fitted. One of the benefits of the Hirsch upgrade was a sticker inside the fuel filler area that says "98 octane only". I've only done around 134k kms or 84k miles. I'm retired and I used to work from home. I've had my Saabs serviced by the same Saab specialists for over 30 years. I've always used Mobil1. The only problems so far have been a coil pack and an ac compressor.

My 2007 9-3 2.0T, has 216,000 mi, and runs like a top! Original head gasket, clutch, wheel bearings, fuel pump, exhaust, water pump, and many other parts! I did change the strut towers, since broken springs were a problem. And, the rear shocks, and throttle body. I use Amsoil signature series 0w30 synthetic, and change it about twice a year, since I’ve been a dealer since 1980. I recently purchased a 2010 9-3 XWD, 6 speed automatic, since I couldn’t,t find a 6 speed standard. It has 95,000 mi, and I’m waiting for a pair of rear wheel bearings, so my 2007 has it beat on that front, LOL! Wheel bearings typically only last from about 85,000 to 100,000 mi on any car, or light truck, on average, so no big deal. The 2007 is an exception! I have rain sensing wipers on the 2010, and they really work! Also, navigation, Bluetooth, and onStar, Saab on!

I owned an '07 Titan Grey Aero 6spd at one time and was disappointed in the feel of it.....kind of sloppy and almost felt more like a truck because of the clutch pedal distance/feel to the floor and shifter throw when compared to VW, Audi, Honda, etc. Anyway, I'm now back to considering a manual again but in a 2.0l instead of a 2.8l and was wondering if there is a discernible difference between the two? Actually the 2008-2009 2.0s had valve issues and there's a TSB out for it that includes 2010 and 2011 (although it seems that 2010-2011 cars with the issue are few and far between). Plus in 2010 the Aero also had the 2.0, same trans options and only added XWD if you wanted it. Her first one was a 2004 Convertible and she put 200k on that one as well. I just wanted to throw it out there because so many people say Saabs aren't reliable -- plus I'm introducing the fleet and this is one of the members :-)

It doesn’t even cost THAT much to get work done. Most people who complain about high garage cost are the same ones that never like to maintain their vehicles in the first place. They would rather trade their car in towards another car, without realizing that they are just exchanging their problems for other problems. It’s much cheaper in the long run to maintain your current car.

Posted this on another video; Saab made good reliable cars... then GM got involved, whereupon they became a GM budget parts bin car. I'm speaking as someone who has had both! I drove my 9000 Aero like a nutcase for 12 years putting over 110,000 miles myself (it had 70,000 when I got it) and it finally died because I didn't get a noise that was coming from the engine looked at promptly, so that's on me. Finally died with 184,000miles. Replaced with.... My 2008 9-3 Aero ttid had the following issues show up within a couple of weeks of purchase (62,000 miles on it then); Losing water and very long time to start; Blown head gasket Leaky early version intake manifold (which should been replaced under a factory recall if i recall due to swirl flap failures) was replaced with newer plastic version, which I've been told is also now having issues with it's swirl flaps!!!!!. As a precaution they also replaced the following (the engine was already in bits); water pump Piston rings cam belt Total cost if it hadn't been under warranty £2500 Since then it's now up to 130,000 miles, and its had; Both turbo's and exhaust manifold replaced (they come as one big unit) Both front struts All four springs A/C has failed Multiple fan circuit failures Tyre pressure monitor failure (system) All four of the actual pressure monitors in the tyres have corroded and fallen apart. Alternator failed. DPF filter issues. Central locking on drivers door intermittent Central locking on rear passenger door intermittent Central locking on rear driver side door always works, but most of the time the handles (inside or out) won't open the door itself) periodically the handles do work!!!??? I also get 'Limited Performance' warning with alarming regularity as there are yet more issues with the intake system. Bound to be some other stuff I've forgotten. In short I hate it, just can't afford to change it right now. Both cars had full main dealer service histories.

Sorry to hear about your poor luck with the car. Conversely we've had really good luck with all of our later Saabs and I had some unfortunate luck with my first 9000 (it was an auto and nuked the differential). 227K? Well, that means it's finally broken in, in SAAB terms. All kidding aside, we have a 2007 SAAB 93 AERO V6 2.8L 24 valve and even attended the SAAB driving Academy up at Road Atlanta back in 2007 when we first purchased it. Here we are in 2018 with the same car and just won't part with it. Goldwing up in the North East provides high quality used parts but we've used eEuroparts.com for most of our purchases when we needed things. Plus, Orio in Sweden purchased the right s to keep producing SAAB parts because they are still in demand. The inside and outside are still immaculate and believe it or not, it still looks brand new. Sure, due to the Sun down here in Florida we've done things like replace the wheel, hood and trunk emblems, and even the rubber weather stripping at the top of the front windshield but those were just pennies compared to making payments for years on a new car that to me, still doesn't and never will feel or drive like this Aero. Anyway, I could ramble on for days about SAAB but I think you all get the picture.

Firstly I would like to ask why the title says it could be a money pit......reason is that the SAAB 93 is a known money pit. Don't get me wrong though, in general the SAAB 93 is a good car in concept. It has a very strong drive train (Engine and gearbox) and is is well appointed (apart from the abysmal standard audio system) and the turbo is bullet proof! The electrics however are a really bad joke indeed. My SAAB 2005 93 which I bought at 140000Km was serviced by a family owned SAAB specialist since it was new. He is a SAAB endorsed engineer , he is also a collection of 25 SAAB's and is presidend of the Western Australian SAAB club so he has providence. He told me "the SAAB 93 is a good car if you do not consider the electrics " the electrics is a good design being designed in the US but somthing happened when the Swedes got hold of the blueprints"....... My SAAB 93 issues in the past 2 years. Steering lock failed (TWICE) Left/front electric window failed Passenger safety belt sensor failed so I need to keep the seatbelt fastened even when nobody is in it. Drivers side electric window failed. Air conditioner compressor failed Heater fan speed control switch does not work Engine crank angle sensor failure Airflow sensor failure Boot lock failure CPU failure (You cannot even buy a new replacement so got a second hand one) they are sensitive to engine heat and thus will eventually fail) Finally the key fob became unsinked from the car so expensive to fix I am cutting my losses and getting the car crushed. My mechanic is a very genuine guy I have been using for more than 27 years. Foe example I had a heater control box lever failure in my SAAB Griffin, another SAAB dealler quoted me $3200.00 as he had to "take the whole dash out to fix it" and yes that is a quote from the SAAB book. My mechanic already had a number of aluminium cam levers madE up as this problem was a known issue and said the issue could be fixed by "going in through the glove box" he fixed it and charged me $200 and it was fixed. so NONE of these issues were the consequence of an incapable mechanic just in case you were wondering. IF SOMEBODY GAVE ME A SAAB 93 FOR FREE I WOULD DECLINE THE OFFER. THEY ARE A KNOWN MONEY PIT AND HAVE THAT REPUTATION FOR A REASON. iF YOUR 93 IS FINE NOW IT WILL BECOME A MONEY PIT AND I TAKE NO PLEASURE IN SAYING THAT.

Not really. Just suspension, brakes, etc. Normal wear items. Still has the stock clutch, coil packs, etc... :-)

@@SaabDr i understand, i currently have 3 Saabs including the 2000 Viggen and had many more but I would disagree with anyone that says they are reliable. Unless you have the N platform most including yours run on GM's (epsilon) E platform, which means the 2003-2011 saabs 9-3 have more in common with the Pontiac G6 (same motor) or Chevy Malibu (same suspension) than the previous N Saab platform. And the E platform was all about sharing components and cutting costs.

@@SaabDr I know Toyotas and Hondas with 300K will all original parts still going strong (not that I'd want to drive a boring Honda or Toyota), but i haven't heard anyone say that about Saabs.

@@SaabDr to my knowledge the older pre-GM (1996-2003) are the NGs (new generation) and pre-1996 are the OGs (old generation). Everything after 2003 are the GM's Es (epsilon) platform, meaning shared body and components on crap load of GM cars, but for the 9-3 is was mostly. Pontiac 4 & G6, Chevy Malibu, Saturn Aura, Caddy BLS and Opel Astra. Why is this important, well because in mid to late 2000s GM went thru a series of cost cutting with Saab. The Es are planned obsolescence while the NGs are practically indestructible. NGs have more durable parts that as soon as GM assumed full control in 2002 got rid off: stronger CV joints and driveshafts, firmer dampers, higher capacity intercoolers, radiators... list goes on and on, GM even took out the cool carbon fiber dash and put cheaper plastic. In 2007 GM decided to cut costs even further and started putting cheaper parts in the 9-3 engines which lead to many bad valves that cost GM a fortune in warranty work, and my guess... probably motivated GM in dumping Saab, but it was really their own doing that caused Saab to go from #1 or #2 in reliability in the 90s to one of the worst in reliability in late 2000s . (According to consumer reports which tracks actual owner complaints). Consumer Reports in their Annual Best and Worst Car Issue has listed the 2008 Saab 9-3 on the Used Car Worst of the Worst list.

If its a money pit then that's GM fault because Saab wasn't a money pit when Saab owned themselves
