The Bible actually tells us not to be Unequally yoked. A yoke is a bar that joined to oxen together to pull and till the soil. If one of the oxen is weak it will bring the other down with it and slow it down significantly. It’s so so important. Even non Christians know this is true, that’s why arranged marriages are still practiced in many cultures and religions. It’s to ensure that you have the same values and morals and principles and that you agree with raise your children the same way.

I was raised in it as well. By 13 I realised everyone around me was brain washed and in a cult. Use to sit in the car at conventions. Thankfully as an adult, after much work, I managed to get my Mom, Brother and Grandpa out. My Father unfortunately died due to the blood rule being imposed on him by a Family member while in a coma out of State. Away from the more sane family members.

@Miguel Ângelo יְהֹוָה actually I do know because I was raised in this religion and suffered from emotional problems as a teen and my parents refused to get me professional help they didn’t even do the jw thing and at least take the issue to the elders but instead kept it a secret from everyone. My older sister was in therapy for a couple sessions but as soon as the therapist mentioned to my parents that they needed to allow her to socialize with others outside of the Kingdom Hall they pulled her out of the therapy. It’s true there are jws that seek professional help but it is strongly discouraged in the jw culture . The reason your being so defensive is because you know this is true.

Totally feel for this guy because I know exactly what’s going on here. I was raised a JW since birth left at 18 but held onto the beliefs until I was 34 . The problem is this is not a religion but it’s a cult. There is no negotiating with these ppl it’s their way or no way. They are taught if they have an “unbelieving spouse” that they have to still teach their kids in order for them to be saved at Armegeddon which is what’s happening here. The guys wife is being guilt tripped and pressured by her mother she is being told if you do not return to the “religion” you and your kids will die at Armageddon. They use any catastrophe to say the end is near they have been using this scare tactic since the group started in the late 1800s. Also the JW faith does not believe in and strongly urges against seeing therapist , counselors etc so this guys wife is most likely not going to see a marriage counselor . She will want to involve congregation elders instead and that’s a bad bad idea.

In the past I have been a practicing Jehovah’s Witness for 14 years. I probably believed for another 15 years. It’s only been in the last 5 years that I have found out the truth. This a dangerous cult which I now know has a serious problem concerning child sex abuse and the cover up of the abuse. I know in the past mental health therapy and counselling was strongly discouraged. This may have changed over the years. If this wife is determined on his path I see no hope for a happy marriage. The wife will be cautioned to never do research on the organization and therefore will likely never know the truth about them. I wasted many years of my life in that so called “religion” and I would never, ever go back. If she refuses to do her due diligence and research this cult in depth then I’m sorry to say this marriage will be an unhappy and unsuccessful one. I feel for this man. He has been duped and he will have to face a very hard choice.

John, I have the same problem with always running late. I finally figured out that a big part of my problem is that I have a terrible sense of how quickly time passes in my head. I will look at the clock and think, oh I have half an hour so I'll fold some laundry before I head out, or empty the dishwasher, or whatever else needs to be done. Next thing I know, it is 45 or 60 minutes later. I have found that it helps if I set my phone alarm 15 minutes before I want to leave and then again 5 minutes before I want to leave. It may seem excessive but it really helps me with focus if I need to get somewhere on time.

Dr Deloney does a fabulous job navigating this very tricky, sensitive issue in a way that doesn’t offend anyone’s sensibilities. He also articulates how an everyday moment of aggravation can be translated to a moment of learning for the children who are bystanders. I find myself applying little things from these videos into my every day life, as a proud father of a 2 year old little girl. I really like this guy…in fact, I might love the man! Some of the people in the comment section should take a second and examine whether or not their words are antithetical to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Hello John, I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but as one of Jehovah’s witnesses and as a full time minister (only reason for saying this is My wife and I are devout, we are not on the fence JW’s with a misconception of beliefs) I’d like you to know I am a regular listener, and as always I think you handled this very gracefully. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to draw the line on an issue like this. There is a lot of advice from our publications and in reference to the scriptures that talk about many of the issues you discussed, such as how to negotiate holidays, blood, etc. Ultimately, we should/would not judge his wife if she went to birthday parties or holidays with her husband out of just supporting him as that is her responsibility as a wife, the same goes for a husband in the same situation. She should show reasonableness in his needs/wants, etc. without being bullish about her beliefs being final, especially in the case of the kids, there should absolutely be give and take until the kids are old enough to decide rationally. That’s how this should be handled from a doctrinal standpoint per our beliefs. Also, just as a heads up, we do believe in Jesus and memorialize his death as our savior every year. Jesus did the kindest thing any man/spirit son ever could which is give his life and spitting on Jesus’ name or role in our worship would be unthinkable to any true Jehovah’s Witness. Again, I’d just like to thank you for what you do, even tho I’m sure our beliefs are different, I appreciate/respect your morals and steadfastness in your faith, if everyone in the world was more like you, Dave, Chris and the gang, we would all be better off. 👍

@@AV-iw3xc Well I know congregations differ from region to region. But in my experience in the jw culture therapy was discouraged . My sister saw a therapist for a short time as a teenager but as soon as the therapist told my parents they were damaging her mental health by not allowing her to socialize with classmates they pulled her out of therapy . I guess it’s all good and well as long as the therapist does not say anything that would encourage you to question your belief system . But the minute that ever happens I’m pretty sure you will be checking out. That being said I think you have a point my mother is and was definitely concerned about her image. She couldn’t let the congregation know she had damaged children because then that would reflect poorly on her and that could not happen . I think yes my mother is a severely mentally damaged person who needs professional help but I also do not believe her being involved in this religion has helped her change at all or grow in the 50+ years that she has been baptized .

That’s the biggest non negotiable for Witnesses. He also tells the caller that it’s likely that his wife will likely leave the religion. It’s typical for people that are raised as a JW to leave during their teens or early 20s and then return back after getting married and settling down. The religion is extremely difficult to follow even when you believe in it as a young single person, but it isn’t that hard to follow while in a committed relationship. She most likely always believed and will continue to practice the religion.

I had a nephew who dated a woman who was a "former" Jehovah's Witness that was being shunned by her family. It fell through when she was drawn back into that world, just like this guy's wife is being drawn back. I guess steer clear of that whole outfit unless one is ready to convert.

As a Jehova's Witness I can understand why these arguments are brought up, topics like the blood transfutions and the holidays can be like a rock that makes you trip 1.- I would clarify that we respect others beliefs and life, we dont desire anyone to have an accident were his life or a loved one is put in danger (Matthew 22:39) 2.- If the wife is strong in faith she will love his husband and respect his beliefs (Ephesians 5:33) 3.- We pray to Jehova in the name of Jesús or threw Jesús (1 Thimothy 2:5)

Even though these two are similar, I’m Christian and my boyfriends catholic... there are so many conversations we have, never arguments but it definitely brings up conflicts in our relationship.

@Rose Nalborczyk. If your boyfriend is a practicing Catholic and you get married to him, you will have to literally sign over the rights to your children's spiritual education to the Catholic Church.

It's been almost a year, I'm curious what's happened. I'm an atheist and don't have a high opinion of organized religions as it is, but JW is on another level. I don't see their marriage surviving at all. I just hope he was able to get a really good attorney and is able to counteract the damage the mom is going to be inflicting upon them.

People of different religious backgrounds really shouldn't marry. They say that religion isn't important to them when they are dating, and it isn't. But when the children come along, as they did here, then people want to be a part of the community and rituals that they grew up with, and share all of that that with their children. If the couple's religious backgrounds don't mesh, then there's a big problem. All of this could be avoided if people dated within their general religious circles.
