Yes, the company probably belonged to Tanaka's grandfather (who would have died by now) with his retirement the company was inherited from Tanaka's father until it reached the hands of Tanaka himself who gave him the final blow, this would give him an explanation as to why. Even with the terrible admiration that both father and son had, the company stayed afloat, because the connections that his grandfather made must have been quite a lot and lasted for several years, but seeing how the company was gradually declining, many of those connections made probably by his grandfather began to get off the boat.

The saying pride goeth before the fall fits the Tanakas in this story.
