So did you not actually catch that Mon Mothma was framing her Husband (from an arranged marriage) blaming his gambling for the missing money that was being used to fund the Rebellion while her "new" chauffeur that she knew was an ISB agent (she told Luthien this in the very first episode) was listening? They "overemphasized" the money thing because it was something that could have brought down the whole rebellion even before it really began and the fact that Mon Mothma, the "ethical uncorruptible" leader of the Rebellion in the later movies/shows started the Rebellion by framing her Husband and giving her daughter to a gangster's son has shades of The Godfather in it.

I think with the Mon Mothma stuff it was drawn out because she herself is stalling. She has been trying to do this her way and Luthen is full steam ahead with what he's doing. She's trying to hold on to her humanity and the good in her. And then she realizes she needs to make the hard decisions like framing her husband for the money and make the ultimate sacrifice by basically selling her own daughter off. She took that necessary, but hard step in order to keep the rebellion going. So i wouldn't look at it as being about the money or her daughter. That's just the obstacle. Instead i look at it as her learning what the rebellion is really going to require of her to make it successful. There is no easy way out of this. It's not going to be a simple fix and she can go back to what she was doing. Its going to take hard decisions and sacrifice. We all know she was going to agree to the deal, but knowing how much she hated that option yet still agreed to it shows how far she has come and how committed she is to the rebellion. She is just starting to become the woman that will lead the rebellion and eventually the new republic. I love it because before we look at her and all the rebels in Return of the Jedi, Rogue One and Rebels we think "wow these are great people and they're the good guys". But all of them including Mon Mothma have had to do some really shitty things. Things that make you question for a second "wait i thought this person was the hero".

I agree with almost all of this, but her disliking giving her daughter up for marriage and framing her husband didn't read to me as "trying to hold onto her humanity" as much as "her trying to remain in her comfort and status quo that is enabled by the fascism of the Empire and the regressive tradition of her planet", and she realized that in order to fight for true liberation for the galaxy she would need to make those extremely difficult personal sacrifices. It may have been easier to keep her family together, but given what was needed to support the rebellion, she couldn't stay enmeshed in the status quo any more. Maybe she tries to keep up appearances in S2 by remaining in the Senate and whatnot, but what's clear throughout this show is that being a rebel is a truly radical act in this society. It means basically joining what could be viewed as a terrorist cell from the Empire's perspective.

Just in case someone else hasn't explained it on either Patreon or KZread, but the Mon Mothma storyline is a tragic one. Mon Mothma, as we know, is funding the rebellion, but as the Empire starts to tighten its grip on the Galaxy, the Empire starts to pay closer attention to her because she has funds missing with no explanation of where it went. Her driver, as she notes to Luthen (Stellan Skarsgard), is an ISB spy, so her every move is being watched. She re-connects with her old friend in the hopes that he can help her recoup the money, but the only one who can come up with that large an amount is essentially a scummy criminal who Mon Mothma DOES NOT want to associate with, especially through a family marriage. Mon Mothma's family dynamic is quite tragic as well. Her daughter does not like her and actively rebels against her. Meanwhile, her husband is perfectly content living a life of luxury while the galaxy suffers, something Mon Mothma CANNOT do. She can't live with herself knowing what the Empire is doing. Ultimately, she sacrifices her family for the rebellion. She makes up the story of her husband gambling so that the ISB spy will tell his boss that thats where the money is going, and not to the rebellion, and she marries her daughter off to the son of the scummy guy to get his help financially to fund the rebellion. The plotline kinda gets bogged down because underneath all the money mumbo jumbo, Mon Mothma is struggling to accept the reality of what she needs to do in order to keep funding the rebellion. She's the moral compass, the incorruptible senator who stands uo against evil. But in order to fight the Empire, she needs to sacrifice her family and get down and dirty by associating with the scummy guy she essentially sells her daughter to and to accept that Luthen's, and in some cases Saw Gerrerra's, brand of rebellion is necessary to effect real change. There's no room for ethics when it comes to rebellion.

The disturbing part is that her daughter would likely actually be into the whole arranged marriage thing. The previous episode establishes she's very into the old Chandrillan customs in a way that her parents aren't, so she probably views the arrangement as a positive thing while from Mon Mothma's perspective she's effectively signing away her daughter's future

The Mon Mothma stuff was all about financing the rebellion and the last scene of her was to show that she is willing to sacrifice her family to free the galaxy from the empire. The argument with her husband in the car was on purpose so the driver (who is an undercover agent) could report back that the husband is the one making the money moves. So I actually enjoyed that. Normal Star Wars - "We hate the empire!" "You do? We do too!" "Let's all be friends and immediately trust one another because we're all good people and the empire is all evil people!" Andor - Three dimensional characters with real motivations, fears, relationships, distrust, resignation to their fates, anger, ambitions, hopes, and love. People living under authoritarian rule still have lives and jobs and a desire to keep their families safe so acts of rebellion must be born from real motivation - one single incident like seeing your father hung in the public square just to make a point or having to suffer constant indignities (Luthen's speech about them always pushing through a crowd, always laughing). But at the same time, these people will live in constant fear of being found out so they can never completely trust their allies. Navigating all of that is the beauty of the storytelling of Andor. It was so good.

And he improvises a break-in, escape, and tracks down the guy who came to kill him. No-one even knew he did it, he ghosted the whole thing. It's the culmination of his 'superpower' of being able to slip under radars and get through the cracks in systems and setups.

  • @kirkdarling4120

The Daughters of Ferrix must have already heard Maarva's speech. They were clearly "aiming to misbehave" from the beginning, defying the Imperial restrictions in every way they could. When the funeral dirge turned into a battle march, it became obvious they intended to start some shizzle. They didn't foresee the bomb, though. I really don't consider this a cliffhanger ending. While I'm sure "the continued adventures of Andor" will be exciting, this season explains satisfactorily to me who Andor was and how he came to become a rebel. I think the arc of his character development has been shown. If I'm wrong...that surprise will be pleasant. I'm more intrigued for next season about Mon Mothma's further development into becoming the leader of an overt Rebel Alliance. The moment of her public announcement occurs in Star Wars: Rebels, but the story of how she got to that point will be interesting. I think it will become a lucky stroke that her daughter is married to Davo Skuldon's son...Davo is probably the best person to hide her daughter once Mon's rebel involvement becomes public. I'm wondering how Deedra is going to keep her career intact after this debacle...but I wouldn't be surprised if she manages to hang the blame on that feckless battalion commander. I wouldn't be surprised if Syril and Deedra wind up being assigned to the Death Star at the end (like Wuulf Yularen, the mustachioed ISB admiral, who we saw briefly on the Death Star in "A New Hope").

The Mon Mothma stuff shows her struggles in trying to fight the empire from the inside, and not being entirely supportive of the way Luthen is fighting. She had been pulling funds out of her family accounts to fund rebellion efforts, and doesn't see an easy way out... she has to turn on her family in one way or another. It looks to me like she's made the choice for the rebellion over her family, as she's shifting the money blame onto her husband. And then with her daughter, I think she's going ahead with it mostly for the façade of what she'd do as someone high level fixing her husband's "mistakes".

While I agree that Mon Mothma's part was the least exciting and a bit repetitive, I'll defend it with a couple of points you might have missed: - You said that you are expecting for the money to be relevant in the story, but the point was more about hiding the money that she already channeled to the rebellion through Luthen (and probably already spent) than about spending new money. Seeing Luthen's activities and assets you can see clearly how the money is being spent, at least partially: his ship is clearly extremely expensive, and he also is providing weapons to Saw Guerrera. But if you want a more direct and meaningful connection to Mon Mothma's money it's the fact that Andor is being promised pay for both the stolen equipment, the information about how he stole it and later the Aldhaani heist. While I think it could have been done better, I appreciate them showing that funding the rebellion is not cheap and the people who put the money are as much at risk as the people on the ground. - While I agree that the "how are we going to hide the money?" feels a bit repetitive, every single conversation about that adds a bit of information: when she first approaches her banking friennd, she just wants to find a way of keeping things hidden. Then at the next conversation with his friend, we learn that she is in much more trouble than she thought and that the Empire is going to look into her finances very soon, and his friend offers her to meet the gangster. Later, we meet the gangster and learn the price for his collaboration. During the conversation with Vel, confirm that Mon is thinking seriously about accepting the gangster's help (although it was quite clear before that she was), but we also learn that the daughter is really getting into a traditionalist mindset and probably won't mind going through with the "introduction", but surprisingly, Mon's husbend is not thrilled about it. Then the scene where she accuses her husbend of gambling when knowing the driver is a spy is just perfect, for two reasons: showing us Mon is not above sacrificing her own (probably innocent in this matter) husbend's reputation to cover her funding, but also giving a tiny bit of hope to the viewer that maybe this will be enough to cover up the money and perhaps she won't have to go through with sacrificing her daughter. But then we discover that she didn't consider that to be enough and she is also willing to sacrifice her daughter for the rebellion she will one day lead. In the end, I tthink I agree it was the weakest part of the show, but I am still very happy they did include it, and enjoyed seeing the high society political intrigue and a different kind of sacrifice for the rebellion, Perhaps developing it more would have been better, but the season was relatively short, and giving more time to "finances and political intrigue" was a bit too risky, as much as I would have enjoyed it. We must also keep in mind that, other than the short appearences of Yularen and Saw, and of course Andor (and the guy he escapes with from prison), Mon Mothma is the only pre-existing character in the whole season, and she has somewhat prominent roles in other Star Wars mediaa, so, perhaps they were more reluctant to do more stuff with her, but also I feel like having her as a prominent character gave us that connection to the wider pre-existing Star Wars universe, which is important in a show where most of the characters are new.

The Expanse is a monstruously good tv series. As far as "space stuff" goes, nothing comes close to it and the complexity and design of the politics in it, the performances of the actors...truly one of a kind. The only reason that series flew under the radar for so many peopple and it also ended prematurely is because it had the misfortune of coming out at the same time as Game of Thrones. Ironically, the latter ended in absolute shame while the former created such a satisfying ending, even having to cut everything short because of the reduced number of episodes in the last season.

This show was confirmed to have a second season while this one was shooting. Season 2 is currently being shooting since the beginning of the year in Spain, I'm not sure if they stopped due to the screenwriters aren't working at the moment. Also they confirmed it will lead to the beginning of Rouge One. I'm agree that the Mon Mothma part wasn't the most interesting arc of the season, I prefer the prison one and the finale were definitely amazing. Now I believe that it was important to know how she had to deal with the empire following and spying on her and her bank account.

I think it's helpful to view the Mon Mothma and Syril Karn storylines as two thematic sides of the coin of dedication to a cause. Syril Karn starts as a company man, but his obsessions with hunting Andor and stalking Meero end up enveloping him into becoming a fascist cog in the Imperial machine. He and Meero both become personifications of the authoritarian punishments from the Empire as a reaction to the heist in the second arc of the series. They are both have separate personal motivations that end up driving them both deeper into willing tools of the Empire. With Mothma, it's about how dedicated she is truly to rebellion and the sacrifices that she must face. She is an immensely privileged member of society, being a senator and extremely wealthy. But when faced with what her decision to oppose the Empire costs, she tries not to pay. She works in her role in the Senate to try and reform things from inside, but obviously it doesn't work because she is ignored there. And to fund the rebellion - including activities she might find too extreme - she must allow her daughter to get more fully enveloped into a tradition she finds regressive while blaming her husband for the missing funds. Her perhaps-lackluster-but-not-necessarily-portrayed-as-bad marriage must suffer for rebellion to occur, and her privileged life on Coruscant must be sacrificed for her to fully commit to opposing the Empire. It's painful to her as she is so used to the status quo and benefiting from it. I think what I love so much about this show, despite it being named for Andor, is that he is but one interesting character becoming radicalized by life under the Empire. Instead of only following him, we see people in multiple parts of this society grappling with the fascism and authoritarianism that is literally inspired by the Nazis and the US foreign policy in Vietnam, either rejecting or embracing it, and seeing how they react or what they give up in order to fight for the cause they believe in. Plus, the acting, music, production, writing, directing, etc. All fantastic. If you have never seen Tony Gilroy's Michael Clayton, I highly recommend it.

"The Mon Mothma stuff felt regurgitated." I guess my question would be what you think could've been cut out of those sections that still would get the point across. Mon goes from quietly financing the rebellion, to being put in the empire's crosshairs because of the raid on Aldhani. Where before imperial procedure wouldn't have noticed the $400k missing, because of the new policy introduced because of her cousin's actions, she was going to be found out. One thing that confused me during this episode is the joke that the driver was listening in on her and Perrin for his own amusement, when since the beginning he was established as being a spy for ISB. The implication there being that before Aldhani and despite not knowing about the money she gave Luthen, the only thing she had done that was "suspicious" was disagreeing with Palpatine's policies in the senate. Just for disagreeing, that had been enough for ISB to plant a long-term spy on her staff. Then, because no one had warned her ahead of time, not even her own cousin who was in the rebellion, her life was now on the line. It's showcasing the problem with operating in cells with no central command structure; one arm of the rebellion can accidentally get another arm killed. That's why they eventually form The Alliance to Restore the Republic; to make sure things like what happened to Mon doesn't happen again. However, it's too late for her, and she ultimately loses her daughter and is forced to to compromise her morals. It's all about sacrifice, and what it takes to actually fight tyranny.

You guys have been a lot of fun to watch with this show. I love this show and everything about it. I disagree about Mon's stuff. Trying to pull something off without people noticing what you're doing is playing chess. It's what Mon and Luthen does best. All the scenes set up what happened in this episode with her scenes. She's got an explanation for where the money went for the ISB and a way to keep funding the growing Rebellion. It's about what she's willing to sacrifice. I love this woman! Loved Maarva's speech and the uprising on Ferrix. What I like about this show is that it's taking it's time to build up to bigger things. I don't mind Syril becoming the humor of the show and his simping for Dedra. I think it's hilarious. Season 2 principle photography has probably finished filming and it'll be 12 episodes each 3 episode arc covering something for each year BBY. For me the Aldanhi arc is my favorite.
