MY VISIT TO K.I SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE THAT CLOSED IN 1995

#airforce
We took a ride to check out K.I Sawyer Air Force Base that is a decommissioned United States Air Force (USAF) installation in Marquette County, Michigan, south of the city of Marquette. Near the center of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the base operated for nearly forty years and closed in 1995. The county airport, Sawyer International, now occupies a portion of the base and has scheduled airline flights and some general aviation activity.
The area of the former base is now an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) for statistical purposes. The CDP is known as K. I. Sawyer and had a population of 3,064 at the 2020 census. It is located within Forsyth Township and West Branch Township about 10 miles (16.1 km) south of the city of Marquette.
There is a lot more to see here and a lot more information about the former base. For more information about this former base on top of the information I obtained, please click on this link below:

Funny thing is....I was stationed there almost 10 yrs (1974-1984)and don't recall ever hearing it referred to as "K.I. Siberia". I remember it being referred to as, "K.I."....or "Sawyer"....or "The Great White North"....or "Someplace Special". Another phrase I remember...."Only the Best Go North, 410 Bomb Wing!" I do remember the blueberry patches South of Base Housing. Nothing like a U.P. Blueberry in any shape or form! Thanks for sharing your trip! Believe me, it was a great place to be stationed and a great place to start and begin raising a family! I miss it a lot!

Awesome video!..I went to K.I. a few times to visit my brother who was stationed there. B52s were constantly taking off and landing 24/7. I got to go inside one one day. It was very exciting. The snow was up to the gutters once, just a tunnel to the front door of there housing unit. I really miss that base. This video brought back memories, thanks for making it!

That B-52 is a D model that came from Carswell AFB back around 1982-1983 when they were phasing the D models out of service. I actually worked on this D at Carswell 1978 - 1983 maintained the tail gunners fire control system. I ended up being re-assigned to Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda Michigan 1983-1991 on the G model B-52s. K.I. Sawyer actually had the H model B-52 assigned there until they started closing bases. Minot AFB North Dakota and Barksdale AFB Louisiana are the only two bases left with B-52s H models.

Cool airbase. The B-52 flew a lot of missions to protect our country. It was capable of being refueled while flying. The men who flew were amazing. They didn't have comfortable rides on it. Now that’s an interesting place to explore. Almost a bit creepy. Like something out of a scary movie. Or an apocalyptic type movie. Shame it’s just been sitting vacant. There is a airport, some housing that was converted and so many more buildings just sitting like the ones I showed in the video. Most of the buildings had signs of them being broke into and no trespassing signs on most of all the buildings. It is a place that touches your soul sort of speak. I was thinking of all the men and woman that lived there and all who flew the planes as I zoomed in on the them. I was there before but just a very short ride through. Great memories of laying on the taxiway in the AAPA (alert area) at 3am watching the northern lights for HOURS. And racing milk cartons up and down the C-Ramp when the wind was right. And catching a ground heater on fire. And getting stuck in deep snow behind the weapon storage area. And throwing ice into the afterburner blast of an F-106. And building tunnels in the huge piles of snow at the end of the runway. Or dancing to George Benson in the TAC Alert Area. Or smuggling a TV into the WSA so we could watch the Lions game. Or spending an entire midnight shift talking on the phone with the one female LE officer at the main gate and zero cars came through. All while on duty. If you thought the Air Force was all serious business during the Cold War, you’re wrong.
