Running your heat is also making your fridge pull more power to keep the interior cold. An easy way to keep it from using more power is to insulate it by throwing a wool blanket over it as wool is an excellent insulator.

But it sounds like he has a good solution until he learns more about what his needs really are and gets lithium ion batteries installed when he can afford it. It’s time for Jackery to step up for him - again.

Remember when you were just getting buy on an inverter plugged into your cigarette lighter? And rocking it! What happened to those days? Just kidding 😂 I actually agree, even tho I am pro AGM for people on a budget, lithium might be a HUGE advantage for you now. I accidentally depleted my 200ah AGM down to like 26% ONCE due to it being overcast and not paying attention. AGMs do recover better from deep depletion better then say flooded batteries. But I was really scared I had damaged my batteries and I was in a panic! I did use a plug in battery charger to recover them. It's a great emergency tool to have. And you can plug the battery charger into the Jackery in a jam. That's what I did, ran the fridge and battery charger off the Jackery until the sun came out good, then let the sun do most of the work.

So help with some real world data. I have a Duracell Deep cycle AGM that states its good for 150-250 100% discharges. I thought staying above 50% prolongs the life, but any deep cycle AGM should be able to be fully discharged at least 100 times and even still capacity drops to 80% not completely kills them? Is this not true? Thanks.

I recently purchased two battle born lithium iron phosphate batteries. Here’s the critical piece of the puzzle. With AGM once you reach float stage, the last little bit only trickles in so the last 10 percent takes hours. Not so with lithium. Full speed ahead till full. 1. Lithium can take more amperage at one time. Higher C rate. 2. Full speed ahead till full 3. Charges faster anyway 4. More usable amp hours 5. Last 10 years. Now, you don’t have to choose Put a switch on your solar output, add a second controller and use your AGM batteries too. Just add a second dc fuse block. You could dedicate one system to music and video, and the other to the house. Just be aware that the two battery chemistries use different charger settings.

Chrome I had AGM once too and had the same issue. Lithium is king. Pricey but worth it and no off gassing. The only problem with lithium is they don’t like cold weather so keeping them in a place they keep warmer or add a heating pad. I’m in the PNW currently, close to Vancouver but in the US side and can already see my lithium being finicky with the colder weather. Mine are under my van but would love to relocate inside. Good luck. Battle Borns are amazing btw.

This is good video for a lot of people to learn from your experiences. IMO, using LiFePO4 batteries is definitely the way to go if you can come up with the bucks. It is cheaper in the long run and MUCH less of a headache in terms of battery maintenance. If you really want another daily hobby, buy lead acid, and you can spend a bit of time every day worrying about and messing with your batteries. LiFEPO4 batteries have their own built in Battery Management System so the battery is MUCH better at protecting itself from bad conditions. Also, LiFePO4 batteries can typically be charged much faster than AGM/Lead Acid batteries, if you have the input power available. Also, if you plan on hooking up to campground power, be wary. First you may need an adapter plug to be able to physically connect. Second, many campgrounds have been wired by amateurs so it can be worthwhile to get an inexpensive outlet tester to verify the wiring. Third, campgrounds are often woefully underpowered. On a hot day, all the RVs run their air conditioners which can lead to a brownout condition for the whole campground. I you try and start something like an air conditioner with too low power availability, you run the risk of burning it out. They sell RV power protection devices but that is yet another box to buy and install. Beware RV power in campgrounds. There is lots of info on the web. I suggest getting educated before plugging in.

If I need power I just pull out the heavy 50 foot extension cord and plug in. My battery maintainer is plugged into the power strip and I have a few outlets I can charge things with or run any plug in devises with. It's simple affordable and I've never had dead batteries. When it comes to vanlife think way! Outside of the box. Don't think it's an RV. Think of it as more of a mobile office/hangout. What you'd have in those put in your van. Life's simple if you make it that way👍

When you fitted that heater with a fan in it i knew it was a mistake. My advice would be do not have heating that requires electricity apart from the initial spark maybe.

Yep, shore power is just an extension cord when you break it down. Campers use a converter (opposite from an inverter). A converter is literally just a built in battery charger that can run nonstop. It charges the camper batteries and provides dc power for the camper. It's housed behind breaker panel. The secret to campers are the breaker panels. They have dc fuses (dc power from converter) and ac breakers (ac power from extension cord)

I'm in Canada too. We've grown up taking advantage of low cost energy. It's a wake up call when you have to generate your own energy for all your needs. You have to replace what you use and the only way to do that quick is with access to grid power ironically. To survive a winter requires a fuel source, heating and cooling are energy hogs. Proper insulation should always be a first concern above all else.

As far as I know you and Cruze have a few options for the long run... Expand the battery bank (and/or replace with LiFe4PO). Add a DC-DC charger (installing my 12/12 30A Victron Orion Smart charger at the moment). Add another solar panel (or an external one that you can point at the sun, like a 100w foldable and an andersonplug or something). Get an shorepower plug (and a Type2 adapter for e-bikes ;)) so you can get a charge from EV-charge points (when there are no EV's connected ofcourse!), ohh and an automatic switch Or just suck it up and turn down the usage a bit... Good luck and you solve the shortages before the dark winter months...

Hey chrome, here in Ohio USA, I have a hard wired battery charger under my hood all year round. Its great for cold winters keeping my battery ready to go. It also helps when I take the family camping at keeping a second battery and an inverter in my toolbox to rock a mini fridge if we can hook up at camp. I also use one that can be in my toolbox separately that supplies 25 amps. Neither of these require holes in the truck body, one hangs out in my toolbox with a 50 foot cord, the other is zip tied to my grille of the truck, quick and convenient easily removable if I sell it or have a failure.

Two words for you Chrome. Battery isolator. I put one on my van. It connects your house batteries to your chassis battery through a device that has a computer chip in it. The chip monitors the batteries so that when the engine is running and the chassis battery is full but the house battery is low it transfers the alternator power to the house battery and tops it off making your engine a generator. It also isolates the two batteries so that your house battery can't drain the chassis battery. When I'm camping and my house battery gets low, I just crank the engine up and even sitting and idling the battery is charged back up in 20 minutes. I love that thing. The shore power thing is great but what if you're out in the woods? You can get them on Amazon (of course) and as smart as Ray is he could install it in under an hour. Covers all angles. It's also great if you're a dumbass like me and leave your headlights on. I jumped started my van, with my van!

I had to laugh. You and Ray outfiteted have taught me so much and when possible I have taken that on board, eg the maxxair delux fan, renogy gear etc. , have been really impressed with the way you can so simply do the diagnostics on your set up. Then this morning, I’m watching and I’m listening...I start talking to the video...dude, shore power....you start talking about it, that it’s this big thing and I’m laughing, telling you talk to raynor, it’s not the big deal you think it is. I had it put in a couple of years back before I got the auxillary battery etc. . You crack me up, love it . You made my day. The van looks frickin brilliant.

One of the biggest things you could do is upgrade wire sizes, alternator wire included. The other cheap thing you could do is get a smaller pulley installed on your alternator this makes this biggest difference when your van is sitting at idle, it will spin much much faster. Love from the okanagan!

4:08 is important to understand - Alternators charge starter batteries very fast. In my simple van build I do two things everybody told me not to do and so far for 2 years I've had no issues and it's been working great for me. (1) I have no auxiliary battery and I run a giant deep cycle as a starter/primary. I just cut up my battery tray to fit the biggest dual purpose marine battery I could find. I tested and at most I draw about 70 watts of power while inside the van with Fan on high, Fridge running and watching TV on a 27 inch while charging my phone. Overnight I consume about 40 watts per hour. My battery returns about 700 watt hours before it's at like 60%. My battery only cost me $100 so I see it as a disposable. (2) I sometimes run my van parked on idle with the OEM Automotive AC blasting for 30 minutes to even an hour QUICKLY cooling the van down and charging my starter (and only) battery to near 100%. This offers me a very nice recovery option. I do have a single 100 watt 12v solar panel on my roof that can return 70 watts in direct light which always seems to keep me topped off - but even in Florida we can have rainy and cloud days. It's also real nice to park under trees some days. I have a 1200 watt inverter under the driver side seat and always run the engine while using. I carry two different emergency battery jumper bricks one of which is a solid state uncharged capacitor I've never had to use. Some boring testing videos on my channel. My van is a very small (efficient and light) 2018 Promaster City 4 cylinder 2wd FWD van. My bed-couch is a two-piece, free standing, foam-only and very ergonomic for me (6'2 260lb). All my storage is above me, inside the walls and under the seats. If I had to build another van right now I would likely build the exact van the exact way but do wonder how the van will be performing after 5+ years and 100k+ miles of possibly abusing it this way. The way I figure the value I extract from the van as a sleeper outweighs the loss of longevity and counteracts the cost of a bigger van, fuel, lithium and solar and related upkeep.

Time for a high amp alternator which will produce 250+ amp's and more battery. Shore power would be a good upgrade as well. Another option is an inverter/charger which will manage all batteries including shore power too

Bigger alternator won't work on his set up. AGM'S will only take so much charge for starters & his all in one Solar/Alternator combo controller he uses splits 50 amps max. 25/25 panels/alternator. He could put a 100k amp alternator 🤣 & it's only going to get 25 amps. If he had lithium set you would be correct with another controller set up. They will take as much charge as you send them. Not AGM'S though ✌😎👍
