From what I have been told about the rest house for women on their periods. In the old days women were sent there because they were seen as unclean and impure but the practice has carried on because women now prefer to go there because it gives them a break from their family chores and having to take care of household duties. The house is seen as allowing free time to women to get together, chat and mostly just rest and unwind together and have fun. Things that they don’t always have an opportunity to do outside. The Kalashi women work very hard and very long hours. Waking up early and fulfilling many duties.

Yes pretty much that.. it’s an interesting concept.. many people believe that this equals the subversion of women but I can say women there are highly revered… they seemed very happy. The idea behind it isn’t for me as I don’t believe women are impure during that time.. however what works for others if they are happy and believe in it is fine by me.

men in northern areas of Pakistan respect women more and they have more rights as compared to other parts of Pakistan. But still, I think men provide for the family and keep them safe that's a big thing in Pakistan, generally, you won't see this in many other countries.@@carriepatsalis

@Carrie Patsalis, very Impressive, would like to add and help understand about kalashi culture and beliefs. These are thousands years old group of people who lost its basic devine messages, only remember that there is one God but some people say there is more than one. There is no book and no messengers. They used to leave dead bodies in boxes and some of the deceased belongings covered with lid. Their family believed that the deceased would be resurrected and should have access to his belongings. Local stray dogs somehow got opportunity to eat their flesh and after sometimes dogs developed affinity towards alive human flesh. Tafter being attacked by dogs, this led to the realisation , watching muslims customs of burial, why its important to properly burry dead bodies. This also brought them closer to muslim beliefs and most of families revert to Islam. After some time, government stop conversion to Islam to keep this ancient culture and tourism alive. Re to menstruation, since there were hygiene issues centuries ago, no proper sanitory towels or pads, they were advised to stay away from rest of family and not to cook for their families. Sorry to say you had ill informed guide.
