I don’t know about that one lol. You need to get the 2020 version that fixes the 4K

If I understand right most of Hollywood uses 2k because of CGI and the cost per frame is to high as well as 30 to 100 Hours per frame to render for 4k. Most are upscaled to 4k. The older movies are not as difficult to do. Good Video. Keep Collecting😎

Why are you buying the 4K updates for movies you think aren't very good? 😅

I’m pushing well over 100 4K titles. Quite a bit are “double dips” but I’m a lot more selective in terms of upgrading titles. The Matrix 4K is my favorite because it’s the original color scheme, just as I first saw it back in 1999.

The original 1995 Ghost in the Shell actually has a 4K Blu-Ray release in Japan only, but it does seem to include English audio and subtitles. It's a far better film than the 2017 live-action one if you aren't aware.

Is it me or do dvd/blu-Ray discs special features seem to be getting less.

let me explain it simpler...the reasion most movies are only 2k is becasue of cgi..if amovie has hevey cgi its going to b 2k...also no mention of the audio on each disc when wether or not the disc has a Atmos track or not is the biggest selling point for a lot of buyers

Yeah I was wondering how he left out sound options, for me its Dolby Atmos which would have been nice if he mentioned. I think the next total 4K CGI movie will be Alita: Battle Angel. I do love this film, definitely the best action movie for the year for me 😁

You've got some oldies but goodies in your collection. I worked at a laser disc rental store here in San Diego in the 90's and seeing the Star Wars, the set on the lower shelf, and Nixon box sets brings back memories!

He's also still on to do The Suicide Squad! First person to do simultaneous Marvel and DC films.

Just a quick note about Blade Runner: The Atmos mix has lots of added sound effects layered over top which were not present in the old Blu-ray's 5.1 mix, and there's also compression present in smokier scenes during HDR mode. Something of a nuisance but still a big step up from a Blu-ray authored in 2007 in VC-1

Most superhero/special fx films will be upscales on 4k UHD as the vfx are rendered in 2k, as a render in 4k costs much more money, so a film.might be shot in 4k/6k etc but it will be mastered in 2k because of fx. This won't change in the future unless studios start rendering vfx in 4k. Pretty much all sfx films are upscales, inc The Last Jedi which you show

russell22w almost true. A lot of movies have SFX done in 2k, but the movie is Color corrected and finished in 4K (like The Last Jedi). Having the effects upscaled is not such a large problem, Its when the live action thats recorded at 6,5 or 8K is colorcorected and finished with a 2k Digital Intermediate (and or upscaling the effects) that’s the problem. And that’s happening with a lot of digital shot movies these days. And also why a lot of 35mm/70mm movies are true 4K on UHD discs, because they scan the already finished movie at 8 K and downscale it to 4K. I would wish that studios would just upscale the effects and create 4K DI’s...

@@graugaarddk Sony only scan their films in 4K not 8K, so not all studios do. There's virtually no new sfx movies that aren't upscales

In theory I'd have no problem with cgi rendered to film, like on something like the Lawnmower Man. But for a digital master that is rendered from constituent parts (that include 4k+ video and polygons that can be drawn at indefinite resolution) there is no excuse for upscaling. What the heck. I guess, maybe, only if the increased color depth is worth it.

@@StephenAnderson98403 There may be no excuse but there are two simple reasons: It's cheaper in 2k and people don't seem to notice it in the cinema. So why would studios change anything? 4k TVs actually are the best reason but people don't buy that many uhd blu rays. In the end it's the people's fault for not really investing in 4k.

@kishenkoolskills90 If you sit close to your TV it is absolutely worth it. Blew my mind actually, like seeing all the old movies in the cinema again. If you are far away you will only see slight differences. However the HDR makes it worth it in any case, if the quality of the picture is important to you.

Terminator 2 looks stunning in 4k on my OLED setup. Cameron wanted this film to look like it was shot on digital and the UHD delivers fully - the weakest disc in your collection is probably Jurassic Park. Also checkout Alien 40th anniversary 4K - great disc.

There's a bit of confusion over this. I studied 3D film making and one important rule is to have no digital noise for 3D. They used the refined version for the 2D 4K version.

I agree with Oliver with T2, I thought it looked bad in 4K on my 4K OLED too. Barely looks noticeably 4K

Not sure what your source or player is or the TV. I ll say again T2 looks stunning on my setup, very clean, grain free (3D transfer) and not artificial in any way, it simply makes it look like it was shot on digital (think older Red Epic/ Dragon or Arri Alexa LF). The critics got this disc wrong.

@@casstor I haven't seen the 4K BR, but seeing the 4K remaster in the cinema, I thought they did a perfect balance of making it look like you were looking at something real/through a window, while retaining the stylish 90's atmosphere of the film.

What a remarkable video for Blu-Ray fans, I really like seeing whether the disc is a truly 4K transfer, cameras used, those 'nerd' tech specs... Looking forward with the movies recommendation's updates for 2020, Oliver!

I only have one 4K Blu-Ray and it absolutely blew me away and I would recommend: _It's a Wonderful Life_ It is the sharpest I've ever seen it, and the HDR is spectacular. It makes me wish that more black and white movies were done in 4K

Very impressive collection, Oliver! Some of my favourite 4K discs are Gladiator, Unforgiven and Blade Runner, outstanding films with outstanding masters. So many damn upscales from modern releases. Also, I am VERY glad you noticed the difference in sound quality on Jurassic Park, I thought I was the only one! Thanks for the tip, I'll try that now. JP3 on 4K is worth checking out if you're interested; more organic and pronounced colours, with less artificial picture sharpness and less noise. Also, I know you're not a fan of The Lost World, but I can say from comparison that it's the best 4K release of the original Jurassic movies, much stronger than the first film.

I'm not really a big fan of 4K discs. One of the big reasons for me to own physical copies is the special features which 4K discs don't typically have room for. Blu-ray 1080p is usually good enough for me.

Right there with you. I'm pretty happy with my standard Blu-Rays and they work just fine with me.

Something about newer movies being heavy with their cgi makes them extremely hard and timeconsuning to render or master in 4k. That's why we get a lot of 2k upscales. Please current me of I'm wrong as I'm new to the whole 4k format.

I am frustrated that Marvel Studios phones it in with their 4k releases. The picture quality is hit and miss in terms of being significantly better than the 1080p version and sound mixes don't have the same punch they did in the theater. What I can't let go is that Infinity War was filmed in IMAX but none of those shots are on the 4k blu ray. It is going to be the same case with Endgame.

Great rundown from start to finish, Oliver. I enjoyed each review although I don't yet have a UHD player. Your keen interest in cinema certainly shines through each title.

Lovely collection, I appreciate you recommending what is worth it on 4k and what works fine just on Blu-ray.

One of the most impressive upgrades on a 4K movie I've bought was an unlikely one...Evil Dead 2. Honestly looks excellent, massive improvement over previous versions. The original Evil Dead looks the best it's looked as well, but is rougher and lower budget, so don't expect a showcase for your 4K telly. Dog Soldiers also just got a release in Germany. On the face of it, it's not a brilliant release due to the disc having no HDR, but it's still the best version of the movie that can be had in a home release. The previous DVD's and blu rays all had pretty big problems with colour grading, then the Scream Factory version had an awful, blown out and crushed restoration from a crappy negative. The German digibook sorts out all of that and puts out a no nonsense version of the film that delivers a great home version at last. Expensive for what it is, but if you love the movie, it's absolutely worth it.

Very true about extra content on new releases being slim and crap - kind of only get loads of stuff by boutique releases like Arrow Video and Scream Factory - It puts me off buying new movies as I feel like they'll double dip and release a better version one day.

Would you say 4K is worth getting for a 50 inch screen or is it only really noticeable on an even larger 1?

Anthony Patterson Depends on your viewing distance. If you’re say more than 50 inches away from your 50 inch screen, you won’t notice the added detail as much. HDR however looks good on any size screen, as long as the HDR grading has been done well of course.

James Gunn is coming back to write and direct Guardians 3. Turned out Disney never actually fired him, and were just waiting for the heat to die down. It's supposed to be out in 2022.

pretty impressive UHD collection, mine is just; 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner 2049, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Christine, Dunkirk, The Fifth Element, Ghostbusters 1 & 2, John Wick, Kong: Skull Island, Léon: The Professional, Mad Max: Fury Road and Superman

oliver can you say what Tv and player you use as i dont see why you are seeing bleeding on hdr?

I echo a lot of the comments very muddled explanation of the 4K format from yourself. It depends how the movie was shot whether it's a native 4k transfer if it's CGI heavy it will be a 2K DI upscale (doesn't make them bad transfers at all some are amazing) I don't like this it's not true 4k rubbish if it's 35mm it has more room to be cleaned up and upscaled. I'm not sure what setup you have but no colours bleed on my set up Fury Road is a stunner .

Earthknight 3400 on the amazon.fr site it was going for around 16 euros which translates to around £15 inc delivery. Snapped that up myself, a phenomenal box set.

I live in Holland and the blu-ray cases here are slimmer as well just like the American ones you mentioned. I think in my own blu-ray collection the only thick ones are blu-rays I imported from the UK.

Am I the only one that thinks normal Blu-ray are good enough ? They still look great on a 4k TV

Nope your not the only one, Ive been impressed with some 4K I've seen so far but it hasn't blown me away like Blu Ray did. For instance I can quite happily watch a blu ray without any issues, but when I started watching blu Ray's I could never go back to DVD because it was such a huge leap.

@@IronsWorks1990 exactly man I feel the same way plus I just prefer the look on a normal Blu-ray I find that it's more saturated & colorful compared to 4k Blu-rays I don't understand what the big deal is I feel 4k Blu-rays is just a cash grab but that's just my opinion I dont find them nesarary especially how expensive 4k Blu-rays are and most of the time I only watch a movie once and move on to the next movie lol

Rich Evans is an American treasure.

The new soundmix is also a good reason to get many of these, not just the picture quality. Like the new dts x mix on independence day or the new dolby atmos mix on blade runner and the matrix which blows the old blu ray soundtracks out of the water👍

Ollie, Avengers: Infinity War is true 4k. It's the only marvel title that is. I think there was initially some confusion around this online but it's definitely true 4k.

James Gunn is making the next Guardians film as he was re-hired by Disney. I usually still buy 3D films when the choice is available over 4K like with the Marvel films. Like you say one day when Disney decides to release them in true 4K I'll buy them then.

I’m not normally into videos of collections gaming or otherwise but did enjoy this one! I have an Xbox One S and a cheapo 4K TV but still enjoy the leap up to 4K films. Personally Alien 40th anniversary has been my favourite. So much detail there to study. Hope you get to see it soon and would be interested in your take.

I appreciate that everyone will be saying you should get this or that so i’ll just throw this out there. OBLIVION is a great movie with an unforgettable score and it looks amazing, especially in 4k but the features are great too. There is a feature where you can watch the movie with just the isolated score. That’s my bag and understand that’s not for everyone.

I could be mistaken, but I read somewhere that Blade Runner 2049 wasn't shot in native 4K, but more around 3.4K. So it is a slight upscale.

2001: A Space Odyssey is only $16 ($9 GBP) on Amazon AU.

Blade Runner 2049 is shot in 3,4 k. So not really a 4k disc, but still one of the best.

Pretty much have the same tastes, Oli! Love your reviews and the 4K collection is dope. This is why I love 4K, it showcases the classics like never before in my life of watching physical media.

Subbed. You're the real g for going into so much detail. Makes it tons easier when deciding which are the best ones to buy.

I enjoyed this video, though I disagree with many of your recommendations. I find that HDR has a far more dramatic impact on picture quality vs "true 4K" resolution, which is likely due to my watching on a 65" OLED TV. I'm guessing you're watching on a larger screen, but one that doesn't handle HDR as well. Either way, this was a fun video.

Have you seen 4k version (2k master) of peter jacksons king kong? Hdr blows highlights that were already bright on bluray :/ but i have to see it on the oled... Also what do you think about the movie? One of my all time favs :)

Just been looking on Amazon and Ebay for Superman 2 the theatrical cut on Blu-ray. Just wondering which is the best version to go for. Also I watched Pleasentville for the first time yesterday. I haven't watched Toby Maguire in anything outside of his Spider-Man movies, and thought it was really good.

You mentioned bleed, but I’ve not personally noticed much at all. Is your TV or projector professionally calibrated? Are they able to resolve the spectral highlights effectively?

Oliver! Any chance you'll do an updated 4K Blu-Ray collection video?

The problem with the T2 transfer is that they used the master prepared for the 3D conversion, which is why they plastered noise reduction over the entire movie, giving it that glossy, unnaturally waxy look. It would probably look great if they could transfer from the pre-processed 4K scan.

I saw this in another video here. The reason, many of the new movies seem to be 4k-upscales are the CG effects. Apparantly it's too costly and time consuming to render the effects better than 2k. So anything pretty new and effects heavy is probably going to be an upscale.

Almost all modern films that are shot digitally are shot between 2-4K. A lot of big budget SFX films are shot at 4K but mastered in 2k, using the extra resolution to help the digital compositing (similar to how films used to shoot 70mm for optical compositing). We’re just now starting to see some digital 8k cameras coming into use but Hollywood always takes a while to adopt new tech. This would allow for 8k acquisition and true 4K delivery.

To be clear, reiterating what Oliver mentioned, there are more benefits to 4K UHD discs then just pure resolution boosts. Better A/V compression and wider color space can make a huge difference compared to 1080 Blu-Ray.

Concerning Dredd, it’s actually not a 2K upscale! It’s much weirder than that... First they copied a 2K transfer onto real 35mm film and then they scanned said film in 4K. So actually a 4K DI was used on there, but the resolution is still equivalent to 2K.

I have thought of another suggestion for a movie that you could review. = yet another partially forgotten but great movie. James Cameron's Avatar 2009. Though it is a movie with lots of clichés and sadly unsatisfactory replies, I still feel it's a great movie, with several good sides and a classic story that we will always retell in various forms. Either way, Avatar was a passionate project, created in the love and art of Cameron to tell a good story. And I respect Avatar for this. Since it is now more than 10 years ago, the outgrowth and the sequels finally come, I think Avatar could be an interesting movie of making a review by you. Thanks. Hope to hear from you.

32:35 Super 35 doesn't zoom into the frame, it's just shot in full frame and cropped for presentation

I've got a couple of 4k disc for Blade Runner, the new Halloween, and those John Carpenter films released by Studio Canal last year but nothing to play them on. It's daunting thinking about collecting films for a whole new format after I've invested so much in blurays. That's a massive fucking shame to hear that the new release of Terminator 2 looks bad- I saw the 3d version in theatres a few years back and I thought it looked decent - when will they get it right on home video!?

Playing these on a home theater PC using MadVR renderer produces the best picture. It even fixes or at least lessens Mad Max Fury Road's HDR problems.

The reason the modern films aren't 4k is because they can't render the special effects in 4k it's to expensive

I do know its on 4K but haven't got round to buying it yet. I have heard the picture transfer is very good.

Thanks for the 4K tour. Very helpful. I have about half of these (all newer titles), despite holding off on buying a 4K player (already have the TV though). The problem is I know what will happen - I'll re-buy all my favs, for, what, the fourth time (excluding in-format upgrades to newer spec-eds)? Damnit movies, take my money!

7:10 I say cause it fits better on our shelves Also with our technology we progressively make things smaller and lightweight, our phones are laptops etc.

Maybe you need to calibrate your tv? I have most of your movies and the HDR color effects are amazing!

asiboy29 The movies he criticised are all known for being dodgy with HDR. Just because the film looks bright and colourful doesn’t mean it looks accurate. It’s easy to oversaturate a film.

I feel Ghostbustes II 4k best best represents its theatrucal run. The Scolari brothers courtroom scene was an example of this. As well as any scene at night with the Ecto 1A. The 4k masteres blu rays of both were pretty good but the native 4k of GB 2 in particular better showcases what the HDR and WCG is capable of without been over blown and over used.
