Theyre really technical pieces of equipment. I remember buying a bunch from a gentleman in outback autstralia and when they arrived half og them didnt work. They had desert dust all over them and when i inspected the airtubes i found they had wasp nests in them some time ago blocking the airtubes, and once that were cleared they were amazing to watch burn.....

both of these lanterns use 7/8" wicks, which one burns brighter? The WTK No.262 burner is claimed to be a better burner with a brass wick tube. Do you find very much difference in overall brightness when compared to the standard Dietz No. 262 burner?

I have the smaller versions of both of these. Mine are both dietz. The quality of dietz has gone down but it’s so simple it would definitely last a lifetime. It’s just small things like welds and seams that don’t line up. I’d be willing to buy a better version with thicker glass although I do like the name brand. Where do you buy the firefly oil?

Please let me know when or where we have ever stated the Champion is American Made. We do state it is produced on American Tooling, which it is. The Blizzard lantern has never stopped production since 1899 and the tooling used to produce the Champion is the non-streamlined tooling from America that was taken to Hong Kong in 1956.

@@kevinstruke1031 The Previous generation Champion (we have not tooled up to produce the next generation yet) was produced on the same tooling as the Blizzard. The Champion is the exact same lantern as the Blizzard, with 3 major changes, Galvanized construction through out (All raw steel on the Dietz which is then painted, only on the outside,) The Champion burner has a brass wick tube which heats the oil that is about to burn to create a cleaner and brighter flame (Dietz Lantern has an all steel burner,) and the Globe on the Champion is far heavier than a modern Dietz Globe. Our Globes for the Champion weight between 8 and 16 ozs.

Use Medallion Lantern fuel, Olive oil will clog the wick and doesn't flow quickly enough. ANY burning oil can/will release 'chemicals' that might not be the best.

There’s a brand of lamp oil named “Florasense” sold in Walmart for use indoors or outdoors. It’s made for hurricane lamps and burns odorless. You may see something labeled “ultra pure paraffin lamp oil”(sold in Hobby Lobby and elsewhere ) but paraffin oil is made for lamps with flat wicks of 1/2” or less and small round wicks. It’s basically liquid candle wax and only burns half as bright as kerosene.

  • @silentseawolf

I spend many hours looking into this years ago. These lamps were built to run on kerosene. anything else is iffy, smoke, clog wicks, ect. The more pure the kerosene, and a trim wick, less odor. Lamplight Medallion Lamp Oil is common enough and is pure kerosene. anything that says paraffin is going to eventually clog your wick and is not kerosene. 2 cheap"ish" kerosene, K-1 kerosene for heaters. BBQ lighting fluid for charcoal briquettes is also kerosene that is highly refined. Farm grade kerosene or dyed kerosene will stink or clog your wick cause its cheaper.

Olive oil will not work. If your lantern is smokey and smelly you aren't adjusting things propperly. If you have used a low grade fuel you should replace the wick before upgrading the fuel. Those high end fuels are way too expensive. I only use 1K kerosene and have no smoke, except for a few seconds after extinguishing, and almost zero smells.

Not sure I follow you as Hong Kong has been part of China since 1997. They are inferior to the vintage ‘made in the USA’ Dietz lanterns. I have the vintage ones and Hong Kong ones. The biggest failure point on the Hong Kongs are the tank seams. Highly recommend anyone purchasing them apply a good tank sealer before adding fuel. And don’t be shy from using diesel fuel or least having that as an emergency reliable fuel supply.

W.T. Kirkman, not W.D. Kirkman...you used a "D" early on the video. Currently their house brand is also made in China. I really like the Air Pilot, Blizzard, and the Dietz Original #76 Galvanized is truly an outstanding smaller lantern. Citronella oil indoors is a very unpleasant experience. My preferred fuel is good old undyed Kerosene.

fuel tip, paraffin based oils will clog your wick eventually. your looking for highly refined kerosene, pure and white. Lamplight Medallion Lamp Oil, K-1 heater fuel, Charcoal briquette lighter fluid are all very suitable kerosene products, whatever you can find at a cheaper price. Steer clear of dyed kerosene or "farm" grade kerosene that has that yellow tinge. Dyed clogs wicks and farm kero stinks.

  • @morayjames92

I would have thought that charcoal lighter fluid was actually Naphtha fuel and far too volatile to run in a wick lantern. I took a look at some various brands of BBQ starter fluid they all only said that they were petroleum distillates on the container. Can you suggest some starter fluids by brand name which you have used and that were suitable (thanks). Baby oil is scented mineral oil which will work well in wick lamps I prefer mineral the light variety. Drug stores usually sell both light weight and heavy weight mineral oil, this is what most lamp oils are, Mineral oil is food grade (baby oil is not so not as highly refined/pure). The desired goal is a fuel with a flash point temperature of 150 degrees F that is what wick lamps are actually designed for. A lower flash point temperature is a more volatile fuel which is less stable and more explosive and burns with more intensity and is more dangerous to store. 1K kerosene is very pure and clean burning with very little to no scent at all this should have a flash point of 150 degrees or very close to that.
