One of the writers that worked on My Two Dads was Chuck Lorre. Lorre would evolve the concept further with two shows he would create: Dharma & Greg (The families of the couple were similar to the two dads from My Two Dads came from different social/economic backgrounds.) and Two and a Half Men (The idea of two men, who are brothers with a kid, which is the son of one of the brothers.).

Yes, "Night Court" existed in the same universe as "My Two Dads". I think a lot of the reason spin-offs fail is because they are too similar to the 1st show. Still like the re-runs of the 1st 2 years of My Two Dads.

A former friend (named here too) of mine was a regular and it was a terrible experience for him and most people on this set, it was very toxic and borderline volatile.

Loved that show, i re watched it a couple of years ago since it 1st aired and i really enjoyed it but it sucks it was only 3 seasons!!??.... i had no idea this was an attempt for a spin off, im also watching married with children for the 1st time and when i saw the ep. with Matt Leblanc and his dad i immediately guessed it was an attempt at a spin off!!!... why did 80s and 90s show always pushed for that!?.... well we got a couple of goods ones.... Family Matters and Different World

The reason for sitcom spin-offs I'm guessing the networks wanted more viewers while the producers wanted more hits which equaled more money for them.

The original Star Trek and The Brady Bunch had backdoor pilot episodes in the 1960s & 70s, so it's not an 80s or 90s trend. Spin-offs have always been a thing, going back to the radio era of the 1940s.

Times have changed. This show was getting 18 million viewers in its last season and that was considered poor. If a show had 18 million viewers today, the suits at the network would Randy Marsh all over themselves.
