Charles in Charge: Why the Spin-Offs Failed

Ойын-сауық

Scott Baio was in charge of our days and our nights on Charles in Charge. He was also in charge of directing three backdoor pilot episodes that tried to launch Charles in Charge spin-offs. And they all have something in common. Find out why these three spin-offs are "identical" on Behind the Backdoor Pilot: Charles in Charge.

If a sitcom episode suddenly introduces a wacky cast of characters who will never be seen or mentioned again, then it's likely a purposed pilot for a new show.

@@atomicabe well true sitcoms can introduce characters not seen before but doesn't mean they will get their own show..for Example on Happy Days MRS C's nephew Roger and MR C's Niece "K C" had never been mentioned before yet later in the series after Richie and Ralph left...both Rogers and K. C. were introduced but never given their own series. so not all new characters are given their own series.

Another weird concept to this show was when it went from network to syndication. The original family moves out and a new one moves in WITH CHARLES STILL THERE!!! Imagine buying or renting a place to stay then being told there is a man in the basement. He comes with the home.

Sitcom idea. Characters are stuck in a failed backdoor pilot, still having ongoing sitcom hijinks, everyone is aware they are in a failed pilot and are trapped, and aware that they aren't actually being broadcast or watched (even though in reality we are), and there is this kinda limbo where all failed pilots exist like this.

CHRISTMAS RECOMMENDATIONS : 1. Home For The Holidays ( season 1 ) Charles, Buddy, Gwendolyn and The Pembrokes with guest star Rue McClanahan. 2. Yule Laugh ( season 3 ) Charles, Buddy, Lillian and The Powells trapped in a cabin during a snow storm.

I'm really impressed with your video. Super well done! I love '80s TV and used to watch Charles in Charge but don't remember those spinoff attempts. It's so strange to me how Willie Aames went from teen heartthrob in Eight is Enough, totally cool character to a complete idiot. I didn't remember just how ridiculous it got in later years. And Dudley... yikes! Fun video. I look forward to exploring your channel.

Any chance you will do any of the backdoor pilots for Facts of Life...or The Cosby Shows backdoor pilot attempt with s1 "mr quiet"? Though the first season of Cosby was a breakout, it was def a bold move for them to try to do a spinoff after just ONE season lol, but I'm also curious about the backstory of that one and if Tony Orlando was fully on board

Another interesting spinoff attempt was the ORIGINAL Empty Nest starring Rita Moreno in a Golden Girls episode. She portrayed a doctor's wife whose only child, a daughter, is away at college, and is feeling ignored by her husband due to his devotion to his medical career. It was never picked up by the network, paving the way for the actual Empty Nest starring Richard Mulligan as a widowed doctor with two daughters to premier at a later date. Of course, The Golden Palace starring three of the four Golden Girls was a one season disaster.

The car wash situation was by far the better of the three. May have been difficult to come up with sustainable plots every episode. Perhaps a fonz type character and a lenny & squigy types would've made it more entertaining. Even a pinky & leather tucadareo. Plus various characters who visit the car wash on a regular basis.

Out of the three spin-offs, I think the Nicole Eggbert spin-off could have actually been really good if utilized correctly. However, it has it's obvious strengths and weaknesses (with it's weaknesses being a significant problem). THE GOOD (strengths): Nicole Eggbert alone would have made me watch the show and the dude who played Tackleberry in the Police Academy films is an EXCELLENT comedic actor, so if I was writing the show I would feature him as much as Nicole Eggbert. Also, the Torkelson's girl is a really good actress so I would have utilized her character as well. Those three actors are definitely the three main stars that would make me watch the show and the writers should have used those three the most. Also, if the Sarah Powell character had been allowed to stick around, that would have been great since that's FOUR awesome characters I would have really liked for this series and would have made me want to watch this spin-off. THE BAD (weaknesses): That Balki / Perfect Strangers rip-off character is NOT good. I just keep thinking that character is the "Coke Zero" version of Balki. LMAO. It's NOT good. Same applies to the Pauly Shore rip-off... it's the "Coke Zero" of Pauly Shore rip-offs. Both Not-Pauly Shore and Not-Balki need to leave. I'm neutral towards the mom (I don't hate her, but not in love with her either, but her character can be utilized as an effective way to move a plot forward). If I had to pick, I would keep the mom for plot reasons but would lose the two Balki / Pauly Shore characters. THE UGLY (ultra weaknesses): That controversial Mexico related line that came out of Nicole Eggbert's mouth... WTF was that?!? LMAO. Even by 1990 standards, that was pretty horrendous. They need better writers or at least someone that can edit the scripts effectively and filter out the more controversial stuff and just make the stories focus on light hearted and fun stuff. OVERALL (in conclusion... I'm writing a damn essay... how did that happen?!? LMAO): Center the show around Nicole Eggbert, the Tackleberry guy, the Torkelson's girl, and Sarah Powell (IF she's allowed to stick around, I would hope she can stay) and keep the mom around for plot progression reasons (and for the mom to be the "Deus Ex Machina" for the other characters when they get themselves into a crazy situation they can't get out of and need to be bailed out. LMAO). Lose fake Balki and fake Pauly Shore and for the love of humanity, have the writers stick to more fun and light hearted stuff and keep away from any controversial stuff. LOL. On a last note, I personally like Scott Baio as a director. I've seen him direct some Charles in Charge episodes and other shows like Out of This World and he does a great job with the actors in all the episodes I've seen him direct. So I would have gotten Scott Baio to be the main director of this show.

My teen self would have watched the last spin-off attempt just for more Nicole Eggery who I thought was the hottest woman who was ever born back then. I thought I remembered her being pretty popular but maybe it was just me thinking that. Definitely not hard to see why none of these took off. I guess to be fair given the quality of most syndicated sitcoms of the time, they probably weren't much worse then what was already out there (there is a reason Charles in Charge succeeded, it's competition in first run syndicated sitcoms was not exactly Friends or Seinfeld) but can't see any but the last one being able to pull years worth of stories out of them, and that one would have likely been a re-hash of what other sitcoms have done better.
