My TV blew up!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I attempt to repair my television, however after the repair the same problem happened again. And if you're wondering, it ran for about 8 minutes after the repair. It's a LG 42LV3550

    These videos are always entertaining to watch! It kinda reminds me of a time back in 2006 when my dad was playing on his xbox 360 and the CRT that he had since 1994 had just imploded out of nowhere. Luckily nobody was injured apart for my eardrums. To this day ive been fascinated with CRTS tvs and electronics ever since that incident. If i can recall i think the CRT was a sony trinitron (i cant recall the model of trinitron).

    The mistake you made was getting the capacitors off of Ebay from a Chinese seller. These capacitors are absolutely trash & more often then not, are mis-lableled & sometimes the polarity stripe is pointing to the positive lead. You've should have ordered the capacitors from reputable electronics distributors like Digikey or Mouser electronics.

    This is awesome. Thanks for posting. It's killing me that people are saying you installed them the wrong way........they blew the originals and they blew replacements (installed correctly!!!!) Obviously it is something else which is causing the capacitors to blow. It looks fun, simple and inexpensive so I am going to try to replace mine which just blew. We'll see if it works or if there is a deeper root issue.

    The capacitors aren't always the issue. In this case, these capacitors might have been given too much voltage by a faulty PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit. I'm guessing you might have moved on from this now, but if you still have it, check the resistors in the PFC voltage feedback circuit. (Might be too difficult to figure out which ones are which if you aren't familiar with repairing these things. The resistors are likely around the area seen at 2:07 on the bottom right of the screen. They're small, lol ... Otherwise, just buy a new power board. When in operation, there may be up to around 400 volts on those capacitors, so be warned!) Researching online, it looks like you aren't the only one with this problem. Good try on repairing it though. I repaired our old Samsung plasma TV twice - once it had a faulty solder connection that caused a power transistor to fail, and the second time because a capacitor went bad. (It was a "CapXon" branded capacitor, well known to not have long lives...) Both times, the TV was having power problems with not turning on properly.

    If it's the same 3 capacitors, one possibility it that you put them in backward; the positive and negative markings are sometime a bit confusing. The only other possibilities I can picture are too much DC voltage or more AC noise than they can safely absorb. Since they are probably there to "short out" the AC noise while storing up the DC, a power supply that is cycling improperly might be enough to eventually destroy them, though I'd expect it to take a while. The power supply is also supposed to regulate the DC voltage to which they get charged and if the regulation circuit has gone off, that could be too high, but even that would likely take out other parts if it were high enough to blow them that fast. One other unlikely possibility it that the ones you ordered might simply have been defective; you might want to try charging a spare one to its rated voltage with a battery and see if it blows up.

  • @TheShospitali

    @TheShospitali

    Well he could of possibly put them in right because after all the first ones blowed up so it could have been a factory defect or something else gone wrong? But at this point we don't know though what you said made sense too!

    And once again was it hooked up to a good surge protector? He might have had a spike in electricity levels. A good surge protector would've helped. I tell you though I believe a lot of this made in China 🇨🇳 is garbage. 🗑 We need to get back to building good quality stuff in the USA 🇺🇸. When appliances would last. 20 to 30 years. When a Ford & Chevy would last 20 year's. I'm so sick of this garbage and dangerous appliances, little appliances, & crap they send over here that don't last.

    yes, I think that here the cause capacitors to burn, is not in capacitors, unless they were connected with another polarity. I think you should look at an earlier stage of the circuit, keeping it disconnected from the rest, datasheet in hand, starting with the power supply. Remember to check if it actually delivers direct current, not only the correct voltage, perhaps a diode bridge may be the cause. But I venture to guess. Lucky friend !

  • @Cartman3782
    @Cartman37822 ай бұрын

    I know this video is old but I figured I'd still share my thoughts. It almost seems like an overvolting issue as in there's too much power in it. From the looks of it I think that's a plasma TV you have and they run at super high wattages and AMPS and a lot of plasma TV power supplies are prone to failure so maybe some type of regulator failed and it's dumping too much power into those caps. Also plasma TV's run really hot so it might of been an overheating issue where it put too much heat and stress on those caps. this seems like a later model that's been cheaped out like all electronics nowadays hence why there's no cooling fans and some argue that there's no need for them but all plasma TV's should have fans. I had a panasonic plasma and the power supply fan got jammed and it caused the power supply to overheat and melt the transformer and a couple coils so I bought a new power supply off ebay for $60 and it still works to this day. Pricey sure but it beats buying a whole new TV that'll just break in a couple years. Still very unfortunate that it happened but that's how tech is. Not built to last

But before the late 1970s, few sets would go more than a year without a repair and I don't remember many people seeing fit to keep one running more than 10 or 15 years; the repair guys would declare them not worth fixing even if the repair was simple. Yeah, that was definitely the sound of electrolytic capacitors blowing up. The root cause could be bad MOSFETS letting too much current flow through the capacitors, or bad resistors, or even the transformers. Transformers over time and heat can burn the installation off of the secondary coils which could also result in this. So, obviously, the capacitors are not the root cause or they wouldn’t have blown up so quickly. I would test the transformers before testing the MOSFETs, however. Because the transformers will burn off their installation before a transistor or mosfet will go..

I’m way too afraid to turn it back on. 😭😩 But I had been having issues with lines across the screen for awhile... So I guess it was only a matter of time! 🥺 this definitely sucks 🤦🏾‍♀️

    You are definitely having a power supply problem or a current draw problem. The voltage regulation system or the transformer itself has failed to set the proper voltage or you have a high current draw from the capacitor bank. The correct step to take before replacing the capacitors would have been to take a DVM and read the circuit voltage at the input side across the first capacitor. I do believe they were inn parallel so you probably could have red across any of them. If the voltage was of a correct value (AC), you most likely have a short circuit causing the hi current draw, that why they all popped one after the other. Capacitors only do two things. They store energy (voltage) and they discharge that energy. They sort of act as a regulator along with resistors and coils (inductors). My best guess is that there was a short on the board and too much current was passed through the capacitors, over heating them in quick fashion. Your safest bet is to replace the entire board. Some may disagree and tell you to find the short and repair it but in all honesty, unless you are a true circuit component expert in assembly and testing, you don’t really know how many components have been weakened by the hi voltage / hi current condition on the board. I would replace the board and go back to watching tv.

    How old was the tv? I have a Samsung tv. mine looks like a tv from 2009. long story short. we had an old Samsung tv with the clicking problem. it was unfixable because the motherboard was bad. we got a new one when the tv repair guy couldn't fix it in 2019. 4 years later and still going. I use it for my PlayStation 4 right now. Fun fact: my sisters phone blew up kinda. No bang but white smoke. turned out to be a battery failure. it was a Huawei p20 pro I think. we ended up throwing it away immediately. We also bought a BUSH smart tv in 2019 aswell. the backlight failed after 3.5 years. my Samsung one is still going strong. We got a new BUSH smart TV after the old one broke. looks like Samsung tv's work better than my old BUSH tv.

    it's really hit or miss these days. I have an old Samsung plasma that's been being used daily since 2007 and it's still just like new. I actually had a P20, non-pro, never had a problem with it, actually one of the better phones I've had.
