When I draw something that sucks, I stick it in a box labeled "Look at these in a year." Because I know in a year I'll see how much I've improved and be proud.

Another tip, don't try to make a masterpiece if you lack the ability to draw the average characteristics in a good drawing, this will only make you become frustrated. Don't expect a masterpiece if you haven't been drawing and learning for a good amount of time. Edit: this is sort of harsh, let me rephrase it. Don't feel bad if you can't make a piece that you like immediately, because practice is something needed to create art. If you really want to get into art, expecting good results too quickly may break your confidence. You must remember that no good artist starts out perfect, no good artist starts the same way they end up.

Feather Heart Yeah this is very true, at least for me. This is one of my major problems. I always want what I'm drawing to turn out amazing and perfect and when it doesn't I get upset and stop drawing. It's something I trying to work on actually. I also have trouble accepting imperfections, thats another thing I'm trying to work on.

I know that feeling. I thought joining deviantart would be a good outlet, but if people don't like your art they just don't say anything, and if they do all they say is "it's good." There is no real feedback :/ That's why I am taking college art classes, I want to be corrected! I need to know an honest opinion.

Destinee Duran It's almost like we need art autocorrect. So then when it changes it to something "correct", you can change it again because it is wrong and you know your original thing was what you wanted. Or you can let it be, because the correction was correct. And then you learn from that mistake.

I think another important piece of advice is to really take into account how you are positioning your hands and body. If you aren't careful, you can really hurt yourself by not taking care of your hands. Drawing from the wrist is bad over time as it stresses out the joint and can lead to carpal tunnel and other painful conditions. Giving yourself regular breaks, hand/wrist stretches, and doing more movement from your elbow and shoulder can do a lot to prevent injury. Having your work space at an angle instead of flat on a table can really help too. Not taking care of you hands can eventually lead to being unable to do what you love, so it's very important to learn this as quick as possible! It's advice I wish I had listened to sooner; wrist pain makes it difficult for me to work on anything for extended amounts of time. On another note, lovely advice in this video. I think it is something I will share with anyone I know who is trying to get into making art as I never have the words to express what you have said so well. : 3

I say that Tracing is OKAY. If you post it, credit the artist but I learned how to draw from tracing and now I'm fairly good at it. People always say "Oh, you can't draw if you trace, you're just copying people. It's not real art." That may be the case, but you can still LEARN from it. Let people learn and teach themselves.

  • @nian111

i think i disagree... it's probably okay for children to learn from doing that, but it's so important to draw things yourself if you want to make true improvements.

Actually, anyone can trace as long as it helps improve your drawings. Like I said, I learned from tracing, and I sometimes trace things when I don't understand how to draw them.

  • @StudlyFudd13

    @StudlyFudd13

Everyone learns in different ways. I learned to draw through tracing, then moved to visual replication, and then to drawing my own stuff. Finally I arrived at trying out different mediums and finally setting on charcoal as one of my main mediums. It is a very valid way to start if that helps you. If only it makes you want to draw more, then that is helping you. Tracing inspired me to draw, so I started drawing. If I hadn't started with tracing i doubt I would be where I am today. I doubt I would have ever seriously drawn.

LeadPencil-223 To be honest with you. I think tracing is a good idea. It's kinda like when your teacher gives you the answer to your math problem, and you need to find the right path to find the answer he or she had. So I completely agree with you statement. But we have to learn how to draw these things without tracing them sooner or later.

this video was so great, and I'm adding tips for people who also like digital art: - there are plenty of free softwares, do your research and figure out which program works best for you - LEARN ABOUT LAYERS (seriously I had a hard time with this one) - tablets can be really expensive, so I recommend going to art youtubers who have been sponsored by companies and you can get a discount - even if you want to work digitally, pls learn traditional first (this is kinda like the fundamentals she mentioned in the video) - tell the people who say digital art is not real art to fuck off

To people getting offended... She's entirely right. When drawing as a hobby, it's fine to disregard these TIPS (not orders nor strict rules), but when it comes to a career in art - there are regulations. It is a very competitive, very unstable, very difficult career. I myself am no artist - i like to draw but there is no way I am cut out for a career in art. However, I am seeking a career in the theatre - which is actually a much more stable career (that's saying something). Therefore, the complexity of an art career entirely astounds me. Work hard and dream big - but do be realistic. Good luck!

*(Gets inspired by the video)* Alright, I can do this. I'm gonna draw everyday, try as hard as I can to improve.. Let's do this.. *(half way through the first drawing)* alright. It looks terriable, but I'm gonna continue.. If I work really hard on it, this will surely get better.. [4 hours later, the drawing looks like it was made by a 6 year old] *(Takes a deep breath)* Oookay, this didn't go so well, but if I practice everyday, I'll surely get better! [3 years passes, *no improvement* whatsoever] *(Rage quits)*

Truth be told, you aren't going to improve in 3 years. You aren't even going to be producing great art in 10 years. I'm 23 this year and i've ALWAYS been creative, i've always enjoyed the act of drawing. From drawing circles with lines on the top for hair and a basic smiley face as heads to drawing anime and been able to replicate anime/manga work if its in front of me. I'm self taught and honestly? I only recently started feeling proud of my progress and my work. I started taking this seriously over a decade ago. I can still see many areas in which I need to improve. I draw multiple pictures, filling up whole pages in my notepads almost every single day for over 10 years. Everyone tells me my artwork is great and is good enough to be published, but I don't see that, I don't think it's nearly good enough yet. There's still too many inconsistencies in it. You've got to really put the effort in, art is something you've got to dedicate your life to. If something isn't working, try something else. Practise. Not by drawing full art pieces and hoping they turn out good but practise by learning the basics, the fundamental shapes of the objects you want to draw, learn to see the things you want to draw in the shapes that make them and not as the object as a whole. Draw pages and pages of hands in various poses until you get sick of doing so and repeat for all other parts of the drawings, then keep doing it. That's the only way you'll truly improve.

Can't remember the name, but there is a program that shows you a fully functional 3D model of a person where you can choose the lighting, pose etc. so those types of things are good if you cannot attend a figure drawing classe. I'm lucky enough to have my college provide them as part of my Game Art course.

It's exactly what I needed to hear, because I always worry about the final result, and want everything to be perfect straight away, it's almost like I'm too impatient to get better, that's something I need to work on. And not worrying about my style! I was so worried and I wanted to find my style, but realising that I don't need to stress about it, helps a lot!! Alice I am so thankful for you. Your art has inspired me so much. At the beginning of my 6th grade year I was afraid to open up and sketch during art class. I had my art teachers look over my art and she said "You have Potential, just believe in yourself." I searched up some art videos on KZread and you were in my recommended. I tapped on your video and it started playing, as I got into your video I sat down in the middle of art class and started drawing. A kid I didn't know said "Wow you're so good" now I feel I have more confidence. Watching your videos inspire me everyday. I can't even say how thankful I am for you creating this amazing KZread channel and just being the person you are. I love you so much❤️❤️❤️

You are amazing Alice. When I made my first comment I was still fresh into art and my art style was all over the place. They had little to no detail and didn't look that great. Today I can do portraits that are almost life like because you gave me the motivation and the encouragement to keep drawing. I stopped for a long time and over the last 2 months my ability to draw and sketch has changed drastically because I would draw every day no matter what it was. I look up to you. You are an amazing person, artist, and someone I am proud and grateful to have learned from. I may not make a career from my art but I can now put my visions on paper. All thanx to you, Alice. Thank you so much for making these videos. You encourage young artists like me to keep drawing even when its hard. I am eternally grateful.

  • @anonymouscandle1223

Yes. I didn't really start to learn anatomy until I was a good maybe 4-5 years into taking art seriously and I still struggle with it over 10 years on. Learning it as soon as possible will definitely be a big step in improving your art and remember, never give up. You may or may not like what you produce but one day, maybe in 5 years, maybe in 10, maybe even in 20, the day that you look at a piece of work and can see it for how good it is, will come. If you ever get discouraged, don't worry, we all do sometimes. The trick is to not let that stop you doing what you love.

Shadow Hime As a fellow 12 year old, yes, it will. Anatomy is just breaking down the human body into smaller pieces that you can study one at a time. If you spend enough time looking at and studying the basic concept of the human body drawing it will come to you naturally, or at least more naturally than if you don't. I've always been interested in anatomy and started learning it when I was 6, now I am a lot farther ahead than most people my age when it comes to drawing, not trying to be rude. So, in short, yes. Learn anatomy, please.

Great tips, especially the one about practicing constantly. It's hard to get into the habit of drawing every day but I have watched loads of artists on youtube start to do this challenge and improve drastically. I think this has a lot to do with your next tip, as artists we really have to let go of perfectionism and the fear of making something "ugly". In the end it doesn't matter what the picture looks like, just that fun was had while it was made and that the picture might be able to communicate something.

Thanks! This was great for me cuz I've been a little down and haven't really had the time to practice the basics like hands, feet and hair and I feel like I'm bad at making originals. But I'm gonna keep it up and practice more! Thanks again!

I really enjoyed this video :) i like how you dont talk down to the artsist or act agressive when taking about how people say "its my style!" like some of these top videos seem to do

I don't know why but i love your voice 😂❤️ I loved the tips! I always have trouble accepting it when people say im a good artist, or when they say like "oh your so good! I can't even draw a stick figure!" Then i wanna scream "BUT YOU CAN DRAW" and then i point out all the things or mistakes i made in the drawing.

Wow your my favourite artist KZreadr. You have showed me that not all artists use copic markers. Some use pencil crayons (I'm Canadian) and get just as colourful work! You have inspired a new subscriber.

As she was talking about the basics of art, my mind immediately went to my art class and what we learned in the beginning of the year.

Such nice tips for young artists 😃 I honestly do like, as well, the push and pull effects you created with your time lapse creating 😄

Great tips! One thing I also found was when drawing from a reference photograph it really helps to take a picture of your work and overlay it in a program such as photoshop to see where your piece and the actual reference differs. It definitely helps with placing and proportions :)

This is really good advice, because I've been trying to shut out people from my work, and tried my best to hide it. Also I try to avoid things I can't draw
