The Echoes of the Eye shoutout really highlights what I like about horror genre despite me having a hard time handling it. At the end of the day, horror games tend to be about overcoming adversity and coming to terms with one's own fear of the unknown. Some of the best horror games accentuate these themes in their narrative, and for a game like Outer Wilds, which is already existentially horrifying in its own right, they didn't need to dig deep to make the DLC feel appropriate for the setting. Easily one of the biggest highlights of the year for what is quite possibly one of my favorite games to date.

Same dude, I went out of my way to avoid it like the plague because I kept seeing it everywhere on youtube but roguelikes and deckbuilders are two genres that I generally have a bad time with, so for so long I hated the game and stubbornly refused to take in anything about that game. It all changed though this past weekend and after getting maybe nine hours of sleep over the whole weekend, I really get what all the buzz was about. It feels impossible to put into words the complex emotions that game left me with, but good lord it really was a well deserved S-tier

I hadn't even heard of the game until this video. I briefly considered pirating the game (it's 2022, we're all, most of us, broke) but ended up just spending the 20 bucks on steam. No regrets. What a great experience, the game is totally worth it especially for someone like me - someone that is casually into card games and played the shit out of slay the spire. I tried to get my boyfriend to play but he's intimidated by card games. I tried to explain it to him without spoilerizing too much but ended up gushing about the meta-ness and creepypasta vibes. Both of which are things I don't usually care for but are done perfectly in Inscryption. I want my BF to play so badly so I can talk to him about it >:(

I'm so insanely bad at deckbuilding games, and also get easily frustrated so roguelites(roguelikes?) where you die constantly are bad for me. So yeah, couldn't get far in Inscryption, but I did buy it to support it, because everyone says it's great.

When Brian said Inscryption is a game that he really wants to talk about but doesn't want to tell you anything about it I audibly screamed "Yes, he gets it!" at the top of my lungs. Because my wife will not play it because she's not big on card games and just wants me to spoil stuff for her and I wont do it!

As a professional chef, I've been told to not comment, but let's ignore that for a second. Those macarons look actually very good. Macarons are notoriously hard to pull off, so you did a great job! Also, I really enjoyed that Inscryption bit. Loved the game to bits, and you really captured the essence of it.

that video is pretty funny as of right now because he is most likely actually making 20k a month (4000 patrons times $3-10 each, twitch and youtube revenue, other jobs like voice acting etc)

The Inscryption part was SO GOOD, the way the camera spins around really brought me right back in to the game.

One of my absolute favorite parts of this vid is Karen’s offscreen “wowwwwww, oh my gosh” after she eats a cookie. 10/10

as an Italian, I must say I've never heard anyone say "ciabatta" quite like Brian says it at 11:20, it sounds so posh and adorable and I love it

Honestly, I have to agree with him that the olympics Google Doodle was one of the best games of the year. I actually did have a lot of fun playing that. Pretty good story with the quests too.

The macarons caught me entirely off guard, and I actually uttered an unexpected "Holy crap" out loud when I saw them.

Inscryption is one of the most inventive games I've ever played, and it's been disappointing to not see more people talking about it.

When sifting, lightly knock the side of the sifter. You don't need to dunk your fingers in there. It also helps if you don't load all the flour or sugar in at once. I usually sift a cup at a time and it breezes through.

This feels like it’s taken him this long to be level with us but we’re just happy that he’s posting and feels comfortable now, glad that you’re still making content, beads

I was a professional chef and quit earlier this year, so im here to say your macarons looked absolutely impeccable and super cute, 10/10 i would absolutely eat those

although it didn't "come out" this year per se, The Great Ace Attorney was localised this year! I doubt it's too your regular style, but it's definitely one of my favourites :)) plotwise, everything is so well linked and,, I just really love the silly lawyer game okay. I doubt it's to your usual taste based on this list, but I certainly had a good time with it!

I'm not a "professional" chef, no one pays me to do it, but I do bake a lot and HOLY SHIT, Brian you absolutely killed it with the macarons.

Yo, another great game that came out this year is Chicory: A Colorful Tale! It’s a game with Zelda-like exploration and progression where the world is your coloring book, and you get to play as a cute dog! Don’t be deceived by its cutesy artsy exterior, however, the story goes deep and explores some pretty dark themes. Soundtrack done by Lena Raine who did the soundtrack for Celeste and the most recent Minecraft updates, and honestly as much as I love Celeste’s soundtrack, Chicory’s soundtrack has so much vibrancy and variance that I can’t help but love it even more. I played it on PC, but it also just got a Switch release, if that’s more your cup of tea. Highly recommend checking it out.

How pricy is it for the switch? I’ve been meaning to get a new game but I’m worried about spending too much considering this year is supposed to be very good for the switch.

I become so invested no matter what this man is talking about, I haven’t played any of these games and doubt I will but I loved this video.

The “kaycee’s mod” beta for inscryption is also great and shows off how good the actual playstyle of the game is, even without the plot elements that made it brilliant. I’m so glad they’ve added it, bc the one thing i thought inscryption was lacking was the replayability and synergy-hunting aspects of other deckbuilder roguelikes.

inscryption is a masterpiece. loved your little "sketch" about it, the cookie/card was dope too.

Having ADHD, that wiki spiral was too scary and too accurate. After watching the KH Unraveled I spent over an hour scrolling through the games wiki trying to figure out wtf was going on and I am more confused about those games than before.

That Inscryption segment was just *chef's kiss*. I just bought and finished the game this week and your little homage to it was wonderful. Had me cheering in my seat lol

I bought Inscryption after seeing it as your #1 and WOW. That game is probably one of my absolute favorites of all time. Thank you for introducing the game and thank you for all your wonderful content. I sincerely hope you have a fantastic New Year.

can we talk about how Brian is an absolute fashion icon even when he's baking?

As someone who’s been trying to make macarons for the past 5 years and failing I let out the loudest noise seeing that BDG made them while talking about difficult/cute characters. Goddamnit, I love this man.

As a cookie expert i can confirm, cookies are doing pretty well this year.

Before Your Eyes was an INCREDIBLE game that came out this year. As someone who has lived with chronic illness since I was very young it hit really hard for me.

Oh my god, that game. I've never cried so hard for so long at literally any other piece of media, it's cathartic. Beautiful experience, 10/10.

Just finished Inscryption after picking it up shortly after watching the video. Game of the year, stomping and screaming about how good of a game it was.

As someone who hasn't played a metroid game before, metroid dread was soo fun!! It's not just nostalgia, that game was made really well and I love the difficulty. Death's door seems very fun too, I'll have to check that out

I was extremely surprised to see Death's Door on this video, I'm glad it's getting the attention it deserves! I highly recommend it, def my best game of 2021. I stayed for the visuals and extremely cute characters as BDG mentioned, and I'd describe the story as melancholy with a rather comedic tone... just great stuff, overall :)

Glad to see that Olympics Google Doodle get some recognition. It was SO fun and WAY more in-depth than I was expecting. Played it at work because I thought it would take 5 mins, pleasantly surprised when it took up over an hour of my day.

Damn, that Inscryption-style video section was SO well done, and the Death Card shortbread is a cute idea. (Also as someone who studied professional patisserie at College and has made Macarons several times I am really impressed by how well yours turned out)

What better way to understand the appeal of the horror genre to be repelled by it (and still oddly into it)?

A bit of the Unravelled character shines through at times, but it's ok, he's healed.

Those macarons are incredible and I hope you are incredibly proud of yourself for making such gorgeous cookies while talking about games you love

I love how Brian really tries his best to break out of the "Content Creator/Influencer" tropes. His videos are always so refreshing in comparison to the stock standard quality of youtube videos these days. Not trying to get too preachy, I just think these videos are always great no matter what they are about and will always stand out in the community. Keep it up!!

Oh! GOTY: Game of the year!!! I finally get this! I saw the beginning, didin't understand, now I see GOTY used correctly in context, and laughed out loud at how he got the right-ish meaning by doing a weird rabbit whole in Wikipedia

Can I just say how much I appreciate all the work that must go into captioning these videos? It goes a long way for people like me. EDIT: Also, this was a really fun format of video game criticism, and while I can imagine it's really fun not having to talk about video games after having to talk about them for so long, if you ever want to do more videos like this on this channel, I'd eat 'em up. Like cookies. But seriously, though, most video game criticism is either caustic or pretentious (or caustically pretentious or pretentiously caustic), and your style is neither. You're just like, "Hey, I really liked this thing, and here's why," and that's super fun.

This video clued me into the existence of Inscryption, and thank you for that! The most unique game I've ever played, and one of the very best in recent memory.

it makes me really sad that basically no one I watch has mentioned anything about Psychonauts 2 in their game of the year lists… I love the game so much

Nerdcubed made it his game of the year... even if you don't watch him, his advent calender game awards are quite funny, and the video crowning Psychonauts 2 his game of the year is pretty touching

i know talking about the games in relation to cookies was more like an “excuse”, but honestly it was a really good way of explaining things in a way that made sense, especially as someone who hasn’t played any of the games on that list! as for one of my favourite games from this year, i’m gonna have to say Impostor Factory (sort-of sequel to To The Moon/Finding Paradise, but can be played by itself). it’s the kind of cookie that takes absolutely no time or skill to make, but the ingredients are played with so creatively that you feel changed as a person after eating one. i played the whole thing the morning it came out and i loved it! alternatively i’d say The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles but i’m not sure if that counts due to a) actually being 2 games that tell one long story across them both, and b) how they aren’t technically new, but they only got an official translation this year. as cookies, they’re full of wild twists and turns, like having a recipe page where half the words are faded and you’re just guessing, but it all (mostly) works out in the end.

The inscryption part makes so much more sense after playing the game lol

Haven't played a single metroid game before dread. Absolutely loved it, it isn't just nostalgia.

This is some high quality content that I did not expect.

Oh boy I can’t wait to see Brian talk about Cookie Clicker, the best video game and cookie, and nothing else

New Pokémon Snap was a small game that I was mildly excited about despite having no nostalgia for the original game, and I ended up playing it a TON. I love the simple pleasure of seeing Pokémon behave like wild animals instead of cardboard cutouts that can sometimes punch.

i know you get tons of comments on all your videos but i just want to say thank you so much for putting captions on everything. i recently lost a lot of my hearing and it may be permanent and it's been hard coping with how many things i can't enjoy anymore but at least i can still enjoy your videos and i really appreciate that.

You are by far my favorite creator that I've found this year. You're a really good dude and artist, so excited to see what you do in the future.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is super feel good, and would give a lot of room for baking interpretation. And I mean the dlc content for Disco Elysium was released this year, so insta favorite for me. 😊

Oh no the flashbacks Edit: I'm glad to see that Brian shares the distaste to the dollhouse in Re:8 too. I replayed the game 7-8 times and always had to have a friend in discord or a party to get through it lmao

The pot head macaroons gave me butterflies with feelings of how cute they were, so creative and lovely well done and thank you for showing us x

I love to watch Brian talk about things that Brian loves!

In the spirit of "tell me some games to play": I just finished Ths Forgotten City earlier today. It's pretty good. If you like time loop games you'll probably like it, especially since it plays with the format in some interesting ways.
