My Top Five User Knives - Open Tag From Screamin Pirate EDC

Ойын-сауық

This is an open-tag response to Brad from Screamin Pirate EDC about my top five "user" knives. These tag videos are always really fun because they make you think about your knives from a specific viewpoint. In this video I talk through what I actually "use" knives for and why I like different knives for those purposes.

Hey there, I just wanted to say that this was an excellent video. I've been in the knife game since 2010ish and I always drift in and out of the hobby. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of cookie cutter knife review videos where guys just plop the knife on the table, go over the specs, mention how they like the ergos, how the blade falls shut, how it's fun to open/close and then calling it a great knife. When clearly they haven't really used or tested the knife. Your thoughts are such a breath of fresh air to me as you talk about blade shapes, blade stock thickness, and how the knives actually cut. Yes knives are fun to fidget with, but they're also tools as you point out. You clearly know what you're talking about and I really appreciate that. So thank you for the great videos so far. Keep up the great work! -Tim

I really appreciate the kind words! I definitely do my fair share of just flipping knives around to play with them (and there are some knives these days where you can tell that is without a doubt the primary use case they were designed for), but I try to always figure out how well a knife works as an actual knife, and what they could be doing differently to make it work better. (My engineer brain loves an optimization problem!) Anyway, glad you liked the video and thanks again for the support!

I love these tag videos for the same reason. Sometimes it gets old comparing knives to every other knife in existence and trying to find the knife that is "best", on average, across all categories (which we know is objectively impossible). Thanks for the tag! Happy you feel the same way. My rant / opinion videos mean more to me than my reviews, honestly.

Yeah, I think these tag videos are a fun change of pace for folks, and a good opportunity to get reviewers talking more about what they actually think, feel, and like about a knife, rather than just how it fits in the pocket. And same -- review videos are interesting and useful, but reflections on the hobby and community are often way more impactful. Excited to hear your take on this tag!

It's one of my favorite knives ever "made" -- I think Spyderco would have pretty good success with a full-on production mini Smock model! And thanks for the kind words of support! I'm glad you like the nerdy details I ramble about. 😅

I've been using the locking one for a bit now too, and I definitely love it! It's such a useful blade shape for the kind of stuff I do, so I'm very happy to have it on a locking knife as well. I _have_ found that the "420J" (As I understand it, there's 420J1 and 420J2, not just "420J", so I'm not sure which they're using, but I also don't know enough about this to know if it matters much) is soft enough to scratch pretty darn easily, but I know the point of it on a knife like this is corrosion resistance protection for the ZDP-189, and for that purpose it's probably a solid choice. It's a total user knife for me too, so I don't care if it gets scratches whatsoever.

@@KnifeNerdery yea mine has some love marks but it’s still a Beauty. And so unique. Everyone wants one and they may not be bringing them back for a while. So that pleases me to know I have one lol. I want the pinscher in m390 as well. But I have two on my sights just waiting for the drop

@@Kungfufigher Yeah, I got super lucky to snag one of the micro-restocks they did whenever they were dropping a different knife (I forget which). They loaded ~5 more of the locking Slaybacks, and I just happened to see it at the right time. Very glad I snagged one!

I really only have three folding knives I carry, Cold Steel American lawman, tactile Rockwall, and a swiss army knife. In my opinion, if you need a package opening/recycling knife, just get a good utility knife.

do the little rubber o rings make the neutron 2 spydieflick easier?

  • @KnifeNerdery

In my opinion, absolutely -- they both add traction and make it more comfortable to push in the slightly weird way you have to to flick the Newtron/Atom. Neither knife provides much (or really any) access to the thumbstud from the side closest to the scale, so you can't flick _out_ and up like you might on some other knives. Instead you have to approach the thumbstud entirely from below and just flick _up_ toward the pivot. Super easy to do once you get the hang of it (that's almost exclusively how I open the knives now), but it can take a little getting used to and figuring out how to position it in your hand accordingly.

The smock -- in general -- is both an amazing knife and an amazing fidget toy. But the mini chopped one is just an absolute fidget monster! I wholeheartedly recommend either hunting one down on secondary (I've seen several floating around), or going directly to @bladechops (or one of the other modders who does similar mods).

Thumbstuds suck. Slicing - marfone stiletto -- heavier use, my old Benchmade Osborne auto or Presidio auto-- heavier than that, SoG Sealpup. Unwanted company, Coldsteel or Schrade Push knife -- have several for edc. Push knife is the amputees best friend.

Right? That and the (also discontinued) Ritter Grip were the best Grips. At least the Ritter one lives on in its spiritual successor, the Hogue RSK MK1-G2. Though that doesn't quite roll off the tongue the way "griptilian" does 🤣
