    Last week I carried 2 sweaters to the laundry room to hand wash........and I accidentally tossed them in the washer. With jeans. This is why I know so many swear words.

    I would shudder to catalogue all of my knitting fails-we definitely learn how to knit by knitting and finding out what works and what doesn’t!

    I was surprised to find bamboo and cotton yarn in our local cheap store. I haven't knitted in about 52 years. No idea what I was going to knit and decided on a singlet or camisole. No pattern, no idea but I'll give it a go. Not sure if I cast on enough 80 stitches, I may have to knit and sew an extra piece in the side or it may be too big. No idea. LOL. having fun ...

    Improvised a whole triangle shawl in stockinette, managing to convince myself throughout that I could block it flat at the end. It was a sausage.

    For me podcasts and videos like this one definitely help in avoiding some mistakes, especially since I am a sloooow knitter and it takes me forever to actually finish a garment 😅 so I've actually managed to dodge things like FOs shrinking in the wash (until now...). My mistakes are more on the side of not knowing what colours work together, what suits me or what I would actually wear. My first pullovers are horrible clashes of colour that look terrible on me 😂 And as a result I still am afraid of trying different colours than the ones the pattern recommends. Also I relate heavily on the 'not knitting enough' front. At least I'm at the point now where I rip back when I notice a mistake, so that's nice 😂 Really enjoyed the video! You're easy to listen to and the editing is hilarious!

    I have quite a few hand-knit socks that my mum gifted me - some are out of cotton and some of them also contain wool - I always wash them at 30 degrees C in the machine and so far they've always come out amazing! I wouldn't wash them on a higher setting though - that I think would ruin them! :(

    I think it can be true what you said at the end - I'm working on my first knitted thing and I feel like I have quite a lot of knowledge as I've been watching knitting podcasts for months now (although I've been crocheting before as well)

    Socks are my favourite to knit. You get to wear them so often. I don't wash mine every time I wear them but I also don't have sweaty feet. I hand wash using Soak and do them all at the same time. I never use pure wool. Sock yarn is typically about 25% nylon to help them hold shape and wear well. There are some fantastic sock yarns out there. I do occasionally throw a pair in the washer and then lay flat to dry and they come out just fine.

    To this day I still ignore row gauge and it bites me in the ass sometimes, especially when there's increasing involved. I also think I tolerate itchy yarn more than I really do - I got a whole bunch of cardigans I hope to line with jersey fabric someday so they get more wear. I always think I will be fine knitting with cotton for a long time and get real bad tendonitis. Somehow the necks of my sweaters are always too tight to go over my head comfortably. I've been knitting for like 12 years and there's still so much to figure out.

    When I started out I also was impatient, but with socks. I always wanted to quickly get to the toe (I like knitting them) so I knit the foot too short. Now, years later, I'm ripping back all the toes and adding more length so I will actually wear them lol. Loved hearing about your mistakes! Also, your yarn chicken adventures are a much needed thrill in my life, so ... thanks.... ^^

    I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I love your podcasts-I knit along with you while watching. Although-on the topic of yarn chicken-using the filters to find yardage on Ravelry have saved me several times with finding yardage quantity projects, or using vintage yarns to find projects to make. The other suggestion-have you tried a Lento sweater gor limited skein purchases (it’s a nice sweater with an open gauge that uses so little yarn)?

    A recent fail was making a bralette for my sister in a cotton with no stretch 😅 I literally have to help her put it on and take it off since she can’t get it over her shoulders alone. I ended up giving to our 11 y/o cousin instead but the straps are too long for her body. Won’t make those mistakes again 😂

    I was about to make that mistake - thanks for forewarning me. But what material would you make a bralette of then? Wool is too hot I think, cashemere a little unaffordable

  • @KnitsByNayla

    @KnitsByNayla

    @@juliaalvares7563 cotton is fine, but maybe a blend that has more elastic fibers in it. I think the non stretchy cotton I used was loops and threads capri eco cotton (85% recycled cotton 15% polyester). But I’ve also made items in Caron cotton cakes (60% cotton 40% acrylic) which had much more give. I like both fibers a lot and am actually working on a tshirt in the eco cotton now. You just have to be aware to the characteristics of the fiber you have. If I were to use the eco cotton on a bralette again I would add stitches for more ease, since I know the fabric it makes doesn’t have natural ease. Swatching helps. Bc then you can feel and see how the final fabric will behave.

    My latest knitting fail is my camisole n°5 by my favourite things knitwear... I knitted it out of a blend of bamboo and tencel. It ended up too loose and transparent and it looks more like a mop than a camisole 🥲 Totally unwearable in public. But I will definitely make another one. I'll try to make a better fiber choice next time 😅

    For some reason I thought length of needles and cable didn't matter and knitted up a whole top on a dpn made for socks or hats. Not only was my tension completely messed up, but I couldn't even tell because the whole project was so scrunched up all the time 😂 And yeah you're absolutely right about the all the knitting podcasts being helpful. Until like a month ago I just went to the yarn shop and got whatever yarn roughly matched the needle strength on the pattern. No wonder the fit of last finished project was terrible 😭

    My only fail I can think of is my first cardigan I started in 2018 as a fairly beginner knitter. I didn't swatch. I guessed and went down a needle size, instead of up, like I know I usually need to do now. The really stupid thing is, I periodically pick it up and keep knitting, even though I know it's too small for me to wear comfortably. So, I've decided to frog an almost completed fingering weight cardigan, to re-knit it. Fuck's sake!! I have also frogged a completed large shawl after deciding I don't like the colours near my face and the mohair/silk/nylon blend was too itchy on my neck.
