For me it is: 1. Winsor and newton- their transparency is INCREDIBLE I like to glaze a lot so this brand works best for me (my first artist grade paint) 2. Daniel smith- very transparent too, they move more in water and are more affordable for me. LOVE their granulation. Their large color range is also good. 3. Schminke- They blend very well, I like their choice of pigments for multi pigment colors, they flow very well. The only problem is I cant get them where I live :( 4. holbein- very very creamy, they are a bit inconsistent when you layer a lot because of no ox gall and they have a lot of multi pigment colors but overall very nice quality paints. 5. shin han PWC- The best thing about them is artist grade paints in a affordable price. I find that they lack pigmentation compared to other brands at times, but they are still definitely artist grade and fun to play with.

    5. White Nights, 4. Mijello Mission Gold 3. Van Gogh, 2. DaVinci, 1. Winsor and Newton. I had to focus on the brands where I have a full working palette of colors. I really enjoy Holbein, Roman Szmal and Daniel Smith, but I only own a few specialty colors from these brands. I am definitely a W&N stan. Their paints are both classic and reliable and definitely the palette that I reach for most. DaVinci are the most affordable in the US. It's definitely not a flashy brand like Daniel Smith, as their color range is limited, but the paint quality is equivalent and they have a few colors that are real standouts. Van Gogh really is the best student brand of paint. I always enjoy using them and, in the last few years, they've increased their selection of single pigment colors. Really is amazing how favorites are truly subjective to the artist, and it's nice to have a good variety to love.

I can say one of my top paints is Holbein Marine Blue! It is the best PB16 I know of. I just lucked out to find 2 tubes of the old single-pigment version. I have favourite paints or colours, not brands so much.

Congrats on your 2 year milestone, here's to many more years on KZread :D Always happy to know that you're a fellow Rembrandt enthusiast! Here are my top 5 picks: 1) Winsor & Newton - very versatile colour range, exceptional cleanliness, depth, 2) Rembrandt - super affordable, transparent, excellent for glazing, 3) MaimeriBlu - incredible flow, great strength, all single pigment, 4) Mijello Mission Gold - vibrant, fun to use, aimed at illustrators, 5) Roman Szmal - complex colour range, strong granulation & local to me! Honourable mentions: Van Gogh (I keep coming back to it) and Sennelier (very pleasant to use)! I'd be curious to know which brands you're not a fan of - if there are any ;)

In no particular order my top five are. M. Graham ... incredibly saturated colors, a breeze to reactivate, modest color selection(which is a good thing imo), Maimeri Blu.... opposite to MG in the sense I find them hard to reactivate (live in a dry arid climate so I know this doesn't help) but I love the colour sensibilities of MB there is something very natural about these colours, fantastic for glazing, all single pigmented. Rembrandt for the same reasons you mentioned...can't put my finger on it but they just work. WN Artist Quality ....another one hard to put my finger on as to why I like these so much, one thought is they activate a bit better than Maimeri Blu but I like Maimeri Blu colours just a tad better. Just a all around solid brand. Finally Daniel Smith....a brand I go back and forth with actually, a ton of colours to choose from which isn't necessarily a good thing and some colours strike me as too artificially. BUT if you select the right colour they can be fantastic brand. Reactivate very nicely (second only to MG) Its just that you have to experiment a bit to find out what works for you with this brand. There my two cents :)

Just found your channel last week. Was enjoying your Daniel Smith swatches (my 1st, and most favorite brand). I have a few in your top 5. I love Van Gogh dusk pink. I have a few favorite colors of M Graham that r usually hard to wet in other brands. I don't enjoy fighting with some hard to re-wet paints. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Congrats on 2 years!!!

Congrats on 2 years.🎉🎉🎉🎉 I can’t say I have a favorite brand nor a top 5. Got so many brands and like them for various reasons. As mentioned in this video, there’s no perfect brand. One might like a particular color range in one another brand. I go by colors. Even if I like the same color in most brands there will be one brand that I love. Example: the Quinacridone Gold from Holbein is my favorite. Love it in other brands, too but Quinacridone Gold by Holbein is my favorite. I also go from one brand to another and mix them all together.

I've tried almost all brands, and the ones I love the most are the handmade brands off of Etsy and elsewhere. They are grounded thick, they crack, they lift too easily, and they're not really transparent. In other words, a terrible proposition for traditional watercolor painting. However, they have a completely different look & feel from the big commercial brands that makes them uniquely suited for the kind of illustration I do (picture-book-style). Their multi-pigment mixes create colors not found in the big brands, and even when manually mixing those they don't have the vintage look of the handmade ones. Some might think that they're like gouache, but they're not. It's really a unique look and feel, as if it's another medium. From the big commercial brands, I might just pick Daniel Smith for their consistency and amount of colors available, and Roman Szmal, for being the closest relative to the handmade ones (at least for their vast selection of earth colors). The one brand I dislike from the big ones is Winsor & Newton Professional: you never know what you're gonna get among its colors, not consistent enough. From the student-grade ones, I like Van Gogh and Marie's Masters line (that's supposed to be professional-grade, but doesn't quite make the cut as pro, for not having cobalts or cadmiums in its line -- awesome as student-grade though). Finally, there's another category of watercolors I enjoy, and that's the solid ink-y type: Viarco ArtGraf and Derwent Inktense. And the liquid inks: the well-known Ecoline and a few others. The worst in that category is Schmincke Aqua Drop surprisingly (they have a streaky application), and the best is Rohrer & Klinger, hands down. The funny thing is, Rohrer & Klinger has collaborated with Schmincke to get access to some pigments. But their recipe remains vastly superior.

Two years! Congratulations! I have found your videos to be very helpful, and often look at them when getting ready to buy paints. I dont know if I have a ranked choice, although Mijello and W&N are at the top. Mijello for its vibrancy, and WN because it is so dang good. People may think it’s boring and traditional, but it layers up beautifully and everything mixes well. I’ve only tried a few Schmincke, but am getting into them more, I have a new set arriving from Jackson’s tomorrow. I like Rosa Gallery, have a ton of Daniel Smith, and only a few Holbein, not enough to put together a palette. Mainly their special, unique colors, like the OG PB16 Marine Blue. I like all my student grade paints, believe it or not, from van Gogh, Cotman and Aquafine down to Miya Himi.

HA~ that mijello yellow was so funny!! ooh holbein is number 1?! NICE~ i do feel like holbein is one of my top brands as well but i really dont have enough of holbein to make a fair judgement. i only have a handful of tubes with just various select colours that dont reallly make up a palette haha~ loved watching this, thanks for sharing! and i like that you're honest with the fact that you haven't used RS that often. it's always important to know if one has used a product extensively or not. i'd be interested to watch a top 5 faves 2023 edition next year and see if there'll be any changes~

I would have put Sennelier in my top 5 :) I haven't tried Holbein because it's quite impossible to get it in Italy for a good price. As for Mijello, it's another brand I want to try but I am vainly waiting for any discount on it. Might get a few colors at full price one day. I agree about van Gogh. For it's price it's great especially if you can pick the tubes judjing by the pigments so not to end up with similar mixes / convenience colors.

@@JayNathanWatercolor be careful with the tubes if you live in a humid place and like to carry a palette with you. It's a personal choice and probably depends a bit on affordability and type of painting one does. I haven't been painting long enough to make a call on this. I started with Van Gogh and I still use them, but mainly to use them up. They were great to start with, but I doubt that I'll buy them again. Once I tried Daniel Smith there was no going back to Van Gogh. I do like Schmincke Horadam paints though, but I only have a handfull, plus I've recently been trying some of their super granulation paints in half-pans.

I just started painting in August of 2021. Had no experience in painting or drawing. Had a stroke in 2017 and I thought it would be great therapy during pandemic. It is and I'm hooked. My top picks are Fourth, Cartman. They were my first set and I have them all. Third, Daniel Smith. I have three of their beginners sets, love them and even bought eight more paints. But they're so expensive I'm afraid to use them. Second place, Kuratake. I have all of theirpants including the art nouveau set they just came out with. They are so much fun. and I think it was easier to adjust to Japanese watercolor, because I didn't know Western very well either. First place, Mission gold. I'm using just the pure pigments at this time as I love to mix colors. Sometimes I like just mixing more than coming up with an actual painting. Only joking. I just love these paints. And if anybody ever wants something commissioned by me LOL I'll use my Daniel Smith. Thank you so much for all that you teach I've been watching you since my first month of painting.

Here are my top five: Daniel Smith(Huge range of colors, colors are very vibrant especially quinacridones, a lot of nice natural- looking greens and lovely violets). Winsor & Newtons(Maybe more traditional in color range, a lot of lovely violets) Holbein(Some colors are beautiful, love their opera, marine blue and manganese blue nova) Da Vinci(Generally more intense than other brands, though not very easy to purchase in my country) Schmincke(Another traditional watercolor brand, I love transparent orange a lot, earths are nice though purples are not as good as other brands) Actually I prefer certain color in certain brand, for example I prefer Holbein's opera, Daniel Smith's sap green, Winsor & Newton's burnt sienna, Schmincke's burnt umber, Da vinci's ultramarine violet than other brands.

My top five: top of the list: QOR: Vibrant, like that it flows on the paper Next, Daniel Smith: Love their color range and how they move easily on the paper, In third place is Da Vinci: very vibrant, 4th place is a new set that might take third place as I try them more but really like the consistency and vibrancy is Rosa Gallery. Fifth place: I like Winsor and Newton, but dry a bit dull. I think I should use a medium with them, but they do have pretty colors. Now it's difficult to limit to 5 places because I have A.Gallo natural set which their paints are wonderful, but haven't used it much yet. I also like White Nights, Mission Gold and Lukas1862. I also like the Japanese style paints Kuretake gansai Tambi watercolors

While the only brand from the list that I’ve tried is Schmincke from the dot card, it is interesting to see what painters like using. I haven’t paid too much attention to the properties of my paints, but I’d probably put my M Graham’s as my favorite for their environmental commitment (their blues, teals, and PG36 are also really pretty and/or useful). I also like the paints that I have from QoR, Winsor and Newton, Blick, and Daniel Smith’s Quinacridone Pink.

My top five: 5.Van Gogh - Only thing I don't like so much about their tubes is the size of the caps, makes it a bit hard to re-open. 4.Schmincke - Sometimes I feel people value their packages&box design more than their paints but they make descent paints of course. 3. Winsor&Newton 2.White Nights - Always has a special place in my heart as the first watercolor brand I tried. I really like their quinacridone violet, I have used 5 full pans of that color. 1.Holbein - Their tubes are made in best quality they can last for years. I haven't seen any issues with gum arabic separating out so far.

I predicted Holbein as your #1! As far as the Rembrandt, and the Holbein, you may like them the best mostly because you have painted with them the most! I mean, we like what we know. As for me? Not sure I can put them in order, but I am just in love with M. Graham, and also Qor, DaVinci and Mission Gold. DS is on my shitlist, but they do make some sweet paint. Definitely Holbein gets honorable mention from me - Marine Blue is amazing, and I really do like their PB 35. The dextrin in the Holbein formula (not all colors, I don't think) makes their paint have a very certain feel. Speaking of that, I got DaVinci's new color Seaglass, which is their phthalo turquoise mix with the unusual PB 15:4. It goes super deep, not quite as dark in value as Marine Blue, but close! I was surprised as heck since the swatch looks very light and my other DaVinci phthalos are rather weak. Phthalo turquoises are one of my favorite colors so I love it!

I've only tried four paints, Reeves (when I was young), Grumbacher Academy (my main paints), and a couple of Van Goghs and Cotmans. Unfortunately I didn't like the Van Gogh's because the colors weren't what I was expecting compared to the Academy of the same name they were replacing, and the Cotmans were just a little chalky. I am going to branch out into Da Vinci soon, then maybe some of the other better brands. So far I have only used student paints my teachers suggested, now I've graduated and have money for supplies I am looking forward to experimenting.

My favorite 5 are 1. Schmincke Horadam, 2 and 3 interchangeably for Winsor and Newton pro and Sennelier, 4. QOR and ... there are several brands that would deserve number 5. Daniel Smith because they are great paints though unreasonably expensive where I live, Lukas 1862 because I have much nostalgia attached to them and love them for how totally unspectacular they are, or both White Nights and Paul Rubens because they are fun paints that definitely deliver more performance than what they cost.

Because I live in America I have leaned towards my local brands. My top 5 at this point though includes non american brands though. #5 Daniel Smith, #4 Schminke, #3 Sennelier, #2Roman Szmal, and #1 M.Graham. Mission Gold ranks up nicely also but not in my top 5. I probably have 3 more brands in my pile. I just recently rehomed my Paul Ruben sets with a young artist starting out. They were good paints also but I have more paint now that I truely need and I love sharing.

In top down order, Kremer, Winsor & Newton, Schmincke , Daler Rowney professional, with a triple grouping in last place Sennelier/Jackson’s/Roman Szmal. I love these honey based paints, but they don’t dry out quickly and while I wait for them to stop being wet their stickiness attracts every floating particle you can imagine, and my cat seems to want to investigate them more than other paint, so regretfully they have been relegated to last. I only have a few DS, frankly as a brand they are out of my range and I have no problems finding European and Far Eastern paints, and do not feel them to be that special anyway. I have to say I also like Shinhan Pass and kuretake Gansai Tambi for their unique qualities and not being typical western watercolours. Honourable mention to some of the new kids too, White Nights, Rosa and Renescens. I am hoping at some time soon to try a very long established Indian make Camlin, I enjoy the different qualities all of these brands bring to what I do. It makes things more of an adventure, choosing a different set each time stretches me a bit to get the results I am happy with. Or unhappy depending on how I feel! I doubt I will ever use up all my paints, but I have no other vices!

So - 5) White Knights - great paints, good dispersion, good color range 4) Holbein - They're fine. I like them... They're just not in the top 3 3) OK - I cannot, in good conscience decide between the top 3. I like them for different reasons, and there are other paints - like handmade - that I like as well... I think I just like trying paints! But the top 3 in no particular order Daniel Smith, M. Graham and Schminke

Nice video! Just a little info - it's pronounced "van-HOK", not "VAIN-go". It's not french but Dutch 😉 'Van' just as in the English vehicle 'van'...and "Gogh" is pronounced 'hok' - with an open o (like hot, pot, lot), 'gh' I pronounced as a hard k (like 'kat'). Hope that helps a bit 😉🥳
