My Top 10 Horror Books Of All Time

Ойын-сауық

Hi everyone! In the spirit of October and Halloween, I will be going through what I would consider my TOP 10 horror books of all time as of the recording of this video! I love the genre of horror and I really want to spend some time prioritizing authors and books within horror that I have not been able to read yet. Therefore, I thought it’d be a lot of fun to go through what I would consider my top 10 horror books as they stand currently (one book per author) and compare that to how it may look in the future after I get some more horror outside of Stephen King under my belt. I hope you enjoy the video!

It depends if you class Swan Song as horror. I personally would say it does qualify, in which case it's that. If not then it's Ghost Story followed closely by Salem's Lot and Pet Semetary. How about you?

I’m reading NOS4A2 now! I can hardly put it down to get any work done. It’s so unique and the character’s are interesting and complex. My favorite horror novel would be between The Shining and Salem’s Lot by King, and A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. They all had such impacts on me and really set the bar for every horror book I read now!

I am still so new to the horror genre, but I am really enjoying dipping my toes in!! Loved hearing about your favourites, you totally sold me on all of them tbh, haha. I listened to Frankenstein this month and was blown away by it! Kinda eager to read Dracula soon as well, just to have those two classics under my belt. Now, I've only watched the movie for Silence of the Lambs (Anthony Hopkins NAILED that role), but that story still sticks with me. Maybe I should give the book a shot sometime soon, I loved what you had to say about it. And Salem's Lot is definitely the King book that calls out to me the most, because I love me some creepy vampire vibes. Hope to squeeze it in soon, can't believe I haven't gotten to it already! Great list, Alex! I hope you find many more new faves as you start exploring more of the genre!! 🥰

Excellent list! Swan Song is the best book I've ever read from any genre. Unfortunately, i am in the very small minority when it comes to The Haunting of Hill House. I went into the novel with such high expectations and felt let down in the end. I would recommend Let the Right One In by John Lindqvist, the novellas and short stories of HP Lovecraft and Something Wicked this Way Comes by Ray Bradbury for future reads. Keep up the quality content.

great list! What's really amazing is when you notice that Straub's Ghost Story is an almost chapter by chapter parody of King's Salem's Lot. Compare the opening sections: both have a man with a child on a road trip going south. In both books the sheriff guesses that something supernatural is happening and decides to leave town before it gets worse. Straub eventually admitted in an interview he was purposefully using Salem's Lot as a template! So it's fun to notice it...

I just read I Am Legend a few months ago! I loved it!!! I loved the movie too but both are so different! The crazy thing is the vampires aren't the scary part; the terrifying part is dealing with loneliness, loss, depression, and the realization that we can become the actual monster! So powerful!

Awesome vid as always Alex! I haven't read many books in the horror genre so thanks for the recs! I do have I Am Legend and Let The Right One In somewhere in my piles of books, hopefully I'll be able to find them soon😁 I have read The Troop by Nick Cutter and loved it. There's also a series called Escape from Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith. I've only been able to read the 1st book because other stories have gotten pushed to the front of my reading list, but I enjoyed it. It's about a penitentiary for young offenders that's buried a mile beneath the Earth's surface. Our protagonist is wrongly convicted of murder and sent there. There's creatures with gas masks and at night inmates get taken from their cells to who knows where. Very short synopsis😆 It's billed as both YA and adult fiction by different sources, I think it hovers closer to the YA for now. Hope the rest of the books are good as well. Again, thanks for the great recs!

I honestly thought I was the only person who thought (and still thinks) that "'Salem's Lot" was Stephen King's best novel. I think "The Shining" is the scariest one he ever wrote, "The Stand" is epic, and "The Talisman" is a true masterpiece. And I have all of his books and obviously enjoy his writing. But "'Salem's Lot" combined a page-turning plot and a genius idea - a vampire moves to a small town in Maine - with dozens of memorable characters that all come across as human and complex and real. Stephen King's greatest gift has always been understanding that no story or idea is going to be compelling unless his constant readers feel emotionally attached to the characters involved. The only fault I have with the book (and it's a very minor one) is with its reliance on the tropes Bram Stoker made famous. It's always seemed odd to me that stories about vampires and demon possessions are often reliant on a very specific religious mythology. But so many of the characters in the book still live with me now, some 45 years after I read it for the first time (damn, I'm old, LOL).

@@TallGuyReads Thanks, happy to be here. I haven’t watched the movie, but I heard the book is nothing like it. It reads (at least to me) very much like a 1st person survival-horror video game. Think “The Stand” but with the high-octane action similar to “Metro” or “The Last of Us”. At times you need to power through it because it’s written as numerous accounts mashed into one narrative (which isn’t always there because everyone experiences the outbreak differently), but it’s well worth reading. Cheers and keep up the quality uploads.

Exorcist is still a book I think about, and not because of Mike's channel lol Some of my favorite horrors: 1- Michael McDowell's Blackwater Saga. McDowell was an 80s horror writer the screenwriter for Beetlejuice. Blackwater may not have been 'scary' per se, but was like a dark Gothic story 2- Come With Me by Ronald Malfi. I've been on a Malfi kick this past year, and this one is pretty popular in the horror community. Also, not quite horror, but suspense/mystery and slightly supernatural. 3- Dan Simmons Carrion Comfort; not for everyone, and took me almost a month to read. But another book I still think about 4 - Jonathan Maberry, Dead Man's Song, book 2 in his Pine Deep trilogy. The whole trilogy is just a perfect October horrorfest. Have a good weekend!

Some great books on this list, especially The Exorcist and Dracula. My favourite horror novel of all time though is Stephen King's It.

I haven’t read much horror, mostly “classics” by Stoker, Poe, Lovecraft. My top 3: 1. Dracula by Bram Stoker - This is one of favorite books period. 2. My Heart Is A Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones - I read a few other books by SGJ before this, and they were good, but not great. But this book kept me engaged and I think it’s one of the best books I’ve read all year. Good pick if you like slasher movies. 3. A Shadow Over Innsmouth by H. P. Lovecraft - This story by Lovecraft is a distillation of all his main themes in his works without being egregiously offensive like some of his works can be. It also is the only one of his stories with action scenes and they’re actually quite well written.

Nothing wrong with that at all! 3 absolute legends right there! Yes...super happy to hear you're a big Dracula fan! It's one of those classics that absolutely never gets old for me...SGJ is an author I have really tried to prioritize and hope to start digging into soon! I've heard some amazing things and MHIAC sounds like the perfect place to start as a fan of slasher movies lol! Oh that's interesting about the Lovecraft story...I haven't read that one, but will definitely be checking it out! Thanks for sharing and for checking out the video!

Salem's Lot is coincidentally one of the best novels about small-town America. I grew up in that town. Mine was in Pennsylvania, but... Completely impressed with your taste in literature.

If you read and enjoy Koko, which you should as it's a fantastic book, then you definitely need to read The Throat at the very least. But I would do: Koko Mystery The Throat Which is the Blue Rose trilogy in that order. Then there's two connected shorter novels .

A Richard Matheson short story also forms the basis for Spielberg's first film: Duel. Worth a watch. A great, creepy film. I think it is free to watch on You tube, or the DVD is very cheap.

Why does everyone praise the haunting of Hill House? It's the worst book I've ever read. Anyone else feel this way? I feel like people pretend to like it because they think they're supposed to. It's crap, nothing happens and the writing is pretentious.
