My Top 10 Favorite Fiction Books!

I'm prepping for my talk in Vermont this week, so here's a fun video about my favorite fiction books.
What are your favorites? And what should I read next?
Links to the books (only a couple; I won't spoil the whole list!):
HPMoR: hpmor.com/ is the official site, though I actually recommend checking out xenohedron's PDFs, which include Daystar's re-written versions of the first four chapters (the originals are considered by the community to be a bit rough compared to the rest of the story; Daystar's versions bring the writing up to the standard of later chapters and make the book easier to get into), and are formatted to look very similar to the printed canon Harry Potter books: github.com/xenohedron/hpmor-pdf
Hitchhiker's Guide, narrated by Douglas Adams - Unfortunately, it seems this is the only way to acquire this version these days: www.amazon.com/Douglas-Adams-H...

Congratz on the 100k!! While I know most of these books by name or by cover, I'm more of a fantasy fan, my favourite authors are Robin Hobb and Raymond E. Feist (mostly his earlier work). The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been on my to-read list for a loooong time, and I really enjoyed the movie. Maybe it should move up on my TBR list...

I want to second the recommendations by others for Dune, Discworld, Wheel of Time, and the Martian. If you want something thoughtful, Station Eleven is great and has beautiful writing. I'm enjoying Orson Scott Card's Pathfinder series and I recommend Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards series (the first book is The Lies of Locke Lamora). For non-fiction, I think you would enjoy An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth by Colonel Chris Hadfield. I think this book is really related to lot of the things you discuss on your channel. Also, as a Sci Fi fan, it's fun to read about the realities of living on the ISS. Another non-fiction book you might find intriguing is The Four Hour Chef. It's more about effective learning than about cooking. Congrats on the 100k!

I love Douglas Adams (I still listen to his books a lot) and based on that you might enjoy Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. In the first ones there are some attempts of rules of magic which are kind of abandoned in later books. The books are fantasy humour. I'm an audio book addict and you can find the whole series in audio version.

For Sci Fi, I'm currently reading The Martian right now and I absolutely love it (haven't seen the movie yet). For fantasy, I recommend Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I've only seen the show, but I adored it and everyone said the show was an accurate adaption so I'm excited to read the book (I already bought it). It's another book with magic it's written in a way that throughout the book there are footnotes that explain things about the world and make it into a really believable place. p.s. I have that same exact Sherlock Holmes book on your shelf! And the ultimate hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy leather book, but the cover is different.

  • @ThePanagoman

You should read The Gentleman Bastards sequence, starting with The Lies of Locke Lamora. The characters are amazing, the worldbuilding is unique, the narration is teeming with flavor and the humor will having you thinking of the book for months. Three out of seven books have been released with the fourth one coming up soon. It's one of those books that once you pick them up you can't put them down until you've finished it. Also, have you read the Stormlight Archives by Sanderson? It's like Mistborn but with a much grander scope (two out of ten books released), everything you liked about Mistborn is in it and much more. It's kinda hard to get into it though since the first half of the first book is filled with unfamiliar things and has you stumbling in the dark but once you realize what's going on it's a hell of a ride.

  • @Hemglass543

With that said you obviusly gave me some new tips on what to read, thanks! Other then that i would recommend Brent Weeks, both the Lightbringer series (not complete yet) and Night Angel (a complete triology).

Good list. I would say that Hitchhiker's began as a radio teleplay, if you were unaware that was run for two seasons and unexpectedly cancelled. Thankfully they did publish all his novels! Also, there was a charming British television series that was also done based on the books. Very fun. I would suggest Hyperion by Dan Simmons and I am also reading Leviathan Wakes (the books The Expanse is based on) by James S. A Corey. Enjoy!

3:30 so I picked up the first book based on your suggestion and the concept sounded amazing! So I read it and ..... ... The Warded Man was so bad! I got to a point halfway through that I was forcing myself to keep reading in the hopes of it getting better. I stopped reading altogether once I got to the part where the protagonist meets the "persian tribe people". The only pro about the book are the action scenes were well written, but besides that - womp womp. I could write more about why I did not enjoy the book at all, but I do not want to write an essay here. But still, you got my hopes up for this book :(

It has ancient mysteries, three very different main characters who approach the problems they encounter in very different ways and a fast paced and tightly woven narrative that doesn't get bogged down with extraneous characters. It is a trilogy and you'll probably need to read the next two after reading the first, but all three are excellent and come to a conclusion that I honestly did not see coming, which is rare for me in fantasy.

I would like to make 2 recommendations The first is Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking series, the first being The Knife of Never Letting Go. Basically everyone can hear everyone's thoughts, but then the main character finds out something that forces him to run but how's he gonna do that when everyone knows what he's thinking. Ness's The Rest of us Just Live Here is also a really good book, it's a stand alone. The second is Kate Griffin's Mathew Swift series, the first is A Madness of Angels. It is difficult to describe this book without spoiling it but basically its about a sorcerer who's trying to find out what happened to London. This book can be difficult to read because the writing style is a bit strange, but if you can read it then please do so. Also this book has the best, most interesting magic system I have ever come across in any book, it is just so different and unique and just really really good. I'm not the reigning authority on magic systems but fantasy is my go-to genre and this is just the best system that I've read about.

One of my absolute favorite Science fiction is "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke. Another british writer. It is the mixture of unconventional science fiction, absolute fantasy and transcedental mystical tragedy behind it, which makes it in my eyes one of the best in the genre. But i also enjoyed every single other of his books. Unlike other science fiction writers he also knew alot about the physical and technological capability of mankind in his time (mid 20th century) and applied the knowledge to rational think ahead of ongoing developments.

I love that two of the only Neal Stephenson books I could actually get through were the ones that got featured on your list. Snow Crash and Diamond Age are amazing! Also love Mistborn and Name of the Wind. Have you read The Dresden Files and/or Codex Alera, by Jim Butcher? Butcher's magic systems, worldbuilding and character interactions/development are some of the best out there, and he has a pretty good sense of humor as well. Also, more on the sci-fi side, I'd also recommend the Miles Vorkisogan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Her protagonist is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters. Think Tyrion Lannister in space. ;)

Have you ever read paralandra by C. S. Lewis? It’s the Second book in his space trilogy. One of my all time favorites. It paints many pictures to describe the origin of “sin”. And how Evil is in our world as we know it. It’s a read that requires thought but is so good.

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. My favorites in the first ten books are "A wizard's first rule, Faith of the Fallen, and Confessor. book 1,4, and 10 I believe. The whole story is great though. Also "Stranger in a strange land" by Robert A. Heinlein is one of my all time favorites. The split infinity trilogy is a lot of fun and really shows off the difference between fantasy and Science fiction. The incarnations of immortality by Piers Anthony. For loads of fun check out the myth adventures series by Robert Aspirin. R.A Salvatore writes great action scenes with Drizzt Do'hurden, also really enjoyed the cleric quintet. The books on your list that I have read were great so I am going to check out the others, just wanted to return the favor by sharing some of my own favorites.

Great list :) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to read any of the books you mentioned, but I'm really thinking about reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Since you listed a couple of Sci-Fi books, I figured you might like 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. It's a Sci-Fi book (divided into three volumes) with elements of Magical Realism. I really enjoyed it. :)

The Foundation series and I Robot by Isaac Asimov Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A Heinlein Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami Post Office by Charles Bukowski Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino The first two lines are science fiction classics, so u may be more predisposed to liking them then the rest. The 4 lines after that are just books that I really like.

I adore the Hitchhiker series, but I haven't read any of the others you mentioned. If you like the sort of new genre of weird fiction, and you haven't read Jeff VanderMeer yet, try "Borne." I'm not sure I'd say it's a favorite, but it has stuck with me, and I did like it.

I'm going to recommend to you The Lumatere Chronicles but specifically the second book Froi of the Exiles. It is epically written and the story is absolutely cohesive and is a thing of beauty. Written by a talented Australian author with a huge "cult" following. It is my favorite series and I think you would give it a try. The recommendations that I'm taking from you immediately are ... Well, basically everything! Thank you! Also do you have a goodreads? It would be awesome to follow you. (P.s. Would also recommend anything from Isaac Asimov specifically I, robot and the foundations trilogy)

I've read the complete Ender's Saga and am planning on reading Ender's Shadow as well. I found I really enjoyed it. It is a fiction that could be a prediction of the human race's future and deals with a lot of morals, ethics, politics and strategy regarding alien-human interaction. But the author never fails to insert the human element which, in my opinion, creates a totally realistic universe that you can completely imagine being part of. To anyone who is a great fan of science fiction, it is a read I would recommend. Speaking of science fiction, I would completely recommend reading the Dune series by Frank Herbert. This deals more with humanity expansion across the universe and its dependence on a certain resource. It showcases the powerstruggle for control of said resource and the consequences and effects it has in humanity through time. A very advanced and precise type of science fiction especially for its time.

You should definitely check out Ursula LeGuin. Also, Pastwatch by Orson Scott Card seems like it would be right up your alley.

If you like the mistborn trilogy then the six of crows duology is a good one to try. The character dynamics are amazing. I personally think they top what I've read of the mistborn trilogy so far. Six characters from different backgrounds are tasked with the impossible heist. The magic system is not as complex, though the worldbuilding is awesome.
