I wonder if the reason why I don't love Sanderson's books as much as others seem to do is because I am older and my discovery of adult fantasy was Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. After that David Eddings. Can anyone relate?

The 4th book I read when I came back to reading after 10 years was The Way of Kings 😂. I was advised against it by a Brandon fan but I dove in and I loved it. I’ve now started reading mistborn a year and a half later. I’m glad I did it the way I did tbh. I’ve read over 30 books since then so it really sparked the love for reading in me again. I always advise people to start with Warbreaker now, as a sampler of Brandon. 😂

Rothfuss to me is worse than GRRM because at least you could say Martin got his HBO money and it made him lose his urgency to finish. Not sure what Rothfuss's excuse is, and I've seen him get pretty hostile when people ask about it which is a big turn off for me. Really sucks because the books are awesome.

I just finished all the cosmere books and have desperately been looking for something new to pique my interest, so this list was a godsend! Can't wait to check out some of these titles. Have you ever read the Lady Trent Memoirs? It's narrated in that retrospective style you mentioned enjoying in some of the books on this list. It's a pretty simple concept-- Victorian era Englishwoman who ends up pioneering the field of dragon naturalism--but it's just done so well and the writing style is an absolute treat, with the narrator commenting and critiquing her own past actions as she tells her story.

I chuckle when people say they rever to Tolkein as 'adult fantasy' when I first read them at 12. I also tehn read Dune rhe first time so there you go. I find it hard not to have LotR on my list. It is that worn out teddy bear that you love despite any flaws or your age. But do have to put Malazan at my top. More recent reads are the Second Apocalypse by Bakker. But I would recommend it to very few. Black Company. Am in a reread now between books and I still love them. Really liked Lies, just dont pay too much attention to the schemes. Finally reading First Law, which is moving up my favorites list.

Intriguing list. The only books on it that I've read are the Cosmere ones, but I'm curious about some of the others and I'd like some advice on which one I should try out first. Of the other books on this list, which one has the most significant sympathetic female presence? Female characters I can like and root for even if/though they aren't the protagonists? I'd like to read more books with male leads, but I'd prefer that women not be shoved into the background.

Great list, well-explained with witty asides. Bet your narrative will be much the same. If you can get your personality into your fiction, it'll fly. Tolkien was my first adult epic fantasy, discovered when I was, oh, 12 or so. Spoiled me for much else but I loved the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series of mmpb books with wrap-around covers by Gervasio Gallardo, Ian Millar, & others. This skewed me toward older fantasy so I've yet to assay Sanderson, although I've read George Rail-Road Martin, just not his Game of Thrones stuff. I'm listing your recommendations. Bravo.

Nice list. I have a little suggestion, if you love LOTR, as I do, try the Sundering Duology by Jacqueline Carey, basically the plot of the LOTR but from the perspective of the other side. It is much better than it sounds. Ms. Carrey is a fantastic writer, her style is perfect for the theme. It is on my top ten list, easily. The books are praised by G R R Martin, which is how I learnt about them. Also, the Acts of Caine series by Mathew Stover, incredible blend of SF and fantasy and an absolutely awesome read. Scott Lynch is among the biggest fans of the series, citing it as key reference work whilst writing The Lies of Locke Lamora.
