very interesting and would like to see more of this for all the other decades. Though not even given a 2nd thought by the academy the idea that in a 50s not a single foreign film was even nominated is ridiculous. Akira Kurosawa comes to mind but I am sure there is a tonne of others.

I’m planning on doing the 40s next.

Have you ever considered doing another one of these? I thought you handled this really well and I'd love to hear your thoughts on other decades, especially 1930s and 1960s, although I realize that you have to wade through a fair bit of lousy films

kwai, Ben-hur, waterfront, Paris and Eve were the best winners that decade IMHO

I respect all opinions, which is more than fair. However, I do have to say I am highly baffled by your comments on Ben Hur and that you put it in the worst half of the best pictures wins of that decade. Ben Hur is a masterpiece and I consider it the BEST win of the 50s, if not amongst those of all time. Not for nothing it won 11 Oscars and ties with Titanic and Lord of the Rings for the most single picture Oscars wins to date.

I love musicals, but Gigi never did much for me (unlike the other big Lerner and Lowe picture, My Fair Lady). I like all of these movies though, it just depends on if I feel like something showy or something more thought-provoking.

Gigi is the worst musical I have ever seen and in my bottom 5 of Best Picture winners. It was joyless and had zero good songs.

Greatest Show is a snoozefest. That and Cavalcade are my nods for worst best ever.

@@kubricklynch I saw it on VHS about ten years ago because there was no DVD transfer. It's interesting as a film that depicts what events were important to a generation that never heard of Auschwitz or Hiroshima.

Cavalcase was not good, but Inwpuld argue that Cimarron was way worse.

I make a premise: I hate the Oscars, I find them commercial awards that reward films with big box office compared to quality (I think it is indicative that Wells, Hitchcock, Cronenberg and in general the best American directors have never won anything: it must be said that there were just awards, but there are more exceptions than confirmations). Said this: All about Eve: I haven't seen it and I love Sunset Boulevard, but from what I've heard they both deserved and so the prize is there. An american Paris: sorry, I don't like musicals and the same year Wells' Othello was released; The greatest show on Earth: mah. Better High Noon, as well as a western is also a very modern thriller. -From here to eternity: I guess he won because it's about Pearl Harbor. I would have given it to Shane or even better to The Big Heat. -Waterfront: sorry, but although it is a well-made film (acting, direction, cinematography, ...) I can't stand it subjectively, since basically Kazan is justifying what he did by reporting many colleagues to MacHarty. Without this subjective thing, Rear Widow was there the same year, I would have given it to this masterpiece. -Marty: I've never seen it, but the Palme d'Or bodes well. From the same year there were if I remember correctly Night of the Hunter, Kiss me deadly and ... Maybe The thief? Undoubtedly an underestimated vintage. -80 days: I like the novel, but the film bored me. If we think that the same year The Searchers but above all Seven Samurai were not even nominated, we must despair. -Bridge on river Kwai: as with All About Eve he and 12 Angry Men are on the same level, it's really hard to choose. -Gigi: one word: Vertigo. Ah, I have three more: Touch of Evil. -Ben Hur: I enjoyed it, being an atheist it didn't involve me that much but in the end it was an excellent peplum (even if my favorite peplum remains Spartacus). I would have given him the direction, probably as a film I would have preferred Some like it hot. I hope you do the sixties too, some awards have been incommentable (coff coff Oliver coff coff).

Oh yes, Vertigo and Touch of Evil are both wayyyyy better than Gigi. I prefer Rear Window to OTF as well. And yes I do plan on doing the 60s, but I think I will do the 40s first.

I don't think Hitchcock himself won an Oscar but I know at least Rebecca won Best Picture

All right ! Finally, someone whose alternative choices are justified. I like your comments since I don't necessarily agree with them, but they make sense. I am thinking of On The Waterfront, which, while I understand your reasoning, I do happen to love it. But I also love Rear Window.
