My Thoughts: I went into Lidl, for the first time / Sophie Shohet

Join me in this VLOG where I visit the supermarket 'Lidl' for the first time. I was especially interested to see THE MIDDLE ISLE, which lots of you told me about!
I have never been into Lidl because I'd always been told that you can't do a full shop in there and that it's full of random things. This is my experience....

I’m laughing so much at “the crazy middle aisle” because, being German, it’s so normal to me. 😂 They’re very strategic about it, too! They always start the year out with workout gear and clothes because everyone is making a New Year’s resolution to get in shape. That’s then followed by home improvement stuff as everyone gives up on the work outs and goes “well, we can at least paint the living room for the new year”. The end of school holidays brings a flood of stationary and so on. 😂

I’ve been Lidl’s no. 1 fan for the last ten years. In Portugal they change the middle aisle every Monday and Thursday. The kitchen appliances and the tools are fabulous, German quality. For Nespresso lovers, they have compatible capsules and the coffee is amazing and half the price. Their muesli is also my favourite. And I could go on and on. 😘

Lidl’s cuts of meat, I find, look good but then when all the water seeps out you are left with very thin cut chops etc. probably, if you weighed them, you may be paying for water. Also, using the same branding colours are my main objections (same as Aldi too). When I first shopped there, I was gutted to find the mayonnaise I had bought was not the brand I thought it was - a knock off no less. . Same applied to a lot of their goods - knock offs!!! Once I realised what they were doing, I only bother with the shop if I’m stuck for something. The one good item I found was their oat biscuits - not the sweet ones but the ones for cheese etc. they are just as good as the M&S ones, which are now £1.50 a packet and Aldi’s are about 55/60p a packet. It’s a bit of a scam going in there - just got to look at what you’re buying.

Sophie, At least here in the U.S., the pre-bagged veg is usually a safe bet because it gets washed before it’s bagged. P.S., the Lidl here looks exactly like the Lidl you shopped at. Yes, they are German so you’ll see things that are not normally in the regular grocery. Lidl’s breads are really good-they have those grainy whole breads.

You can absolutely do a full shop in Lidl! Their cleaning products and toiletries are pretty good too. Having had a house in Spain for over 30 years I recognise a lot of these brands and Cien is excellent and lots of these brands have been around for decades. PS just picked up a Paella set in the “weird” isle (same branch as you went to Sophie) it included a paella pan, paella rice, oil etc and was a bargain - not sure if it will work on my induction hob, but hey I think it was £9! 🤗

Interesting hearing your views on Lidl. I would be intrigued to know your verdict on the quality after trying it. I think Lidl is great for the middle isle, as can get some really good random bargains on kitchenware/tools, which i think the quality is great on. But when it comes to their food, i am not impressed. Things are cheap, but for a reason i believe. Such as a tin of tomatoes will be way less than another supermarket, but its half tomatoey water. And whenever me and my partner have eaten their food for a couple of days in a row, we get what we call Lidl stomach, where we just have digestive issues/bloating and i can only imagine its due to cheaper ingredients being used in their products. As long as you stick to whole foods like produce and meat, its fine. But i always avoid anything pre made in there now

I can do a full shop for food as I cook everything from scratch, mostly, so not bothered about brands, except for catfood, as my cats will only eat Gourmet Perle 😂 and when the Lidl app you get loads of freebies. Glad you gave it a try!

"Lidl Chainsaw Massacre"--I couldn't stop laughing, that was brilliant. Love the videos when you and David go shopping, keep them coming LOL! In the US, the middle aisle in Aldi is known as the "Aisle of Shame"--because you end up with all sorts of assorted things jumping into your cart and spend $100 when you only intended to spend $35.

Hi Sophie, the crazy "middle aisle" at "Lidl", established in Germany originally, is always good for bargains. The organic eggs are very good, Milbona Cottage Cheese ( royal blue lid; also fat-free with light blue lid ) is produced in Bavaria and it tastes good, too. Often there are special offers regarding really good tasting German/French/Italian sausages, cheeses, special food for "Oktoberfest"; try the very good German "Beer Sausage" ( looking like a round small ball, doesn't contain beer at all, it's just the name ), the incredibly delicious "Madeleines" by "Duc De Cœur", ( small French sponge cakes, in a plastic bag ) as well. Also you get organic vegetables ( org. potatoes, e.g. ), organic fruits, organic mince and organic steaks. The Italian "Italiamo"-Aperitivo, in 98 ml-bottles, called "Rosso", is red, tastes exactly like "Campari", but it's completely alcohol-free! I'm living in Munich-Germany and in Dublin-Ireland; in both countries shopping at "Lidl" is always great, not too expensive and good bargains to find. I love both channels of yours, dear Sophie, and I'm looking forward to the next handbag video. Dear greetings, Suschka Susanne.🙋‍♀️👜❤️

I recently discovered Lidl as my local Sainsbury's closed. I love it! And I can do my main shop there. I get some things from M&S still (6 free range eggs at M&S are £1.25) - some veggies I get from M&S still, and I do buy chicken from M&S. But you're spot on, the high quality eggs at Lidl will be cheaper than M&S. I noticed Sainsbury's quality went way down after the pandemic (I spent the pandemic in Australia, so I noticed a difference when I came back). And yes to the fact it's like shopping in Europe - spot on! Also, for future vids, you could go to a farmer's market. I have one and I get lots of fresh things from there (6 lemons for a pound! bargains at farmers markets are truly great). So important to support local farmers directly where possible.

Lidl and Aldi are german. It feels weird to watch you be astonished walking through the market like aliens. 😅 As a german I grew up with Lidl and Aldi and „the middle“ is so common for us. Even the prices are common, we are dazzled when we are on vacation in GB and see the prices in your supermarkets, especially for meet or milk products. As in the most countries (Italy, France…). The products Aldi and Lidl sell are mostly pretty good, so parkside tools are very liked, and the organic vegetables or eggs or even the organic meets are really good quality. The bakery is not worst than in other supermarkets, some products are actually so good. As long as you are not leaning to a special brand, you sure can buy there everything you need for daily use. Why spend more money on everyday things as necessary?

I love Lidl. They have great stuff for good price. They also have teamed weeks, so it can be Mediterranean or French or whatever week and it will be foods inspired by that country/region so it offers variety and opportunity to try something new and different. Produce is good, as are cold cuts and frozen stuff, and their dairy line Milbona and bakery are great. I'd recommend high protein pudding for a treat.... On the other hand, I've only been in Aldi 2 times and wasn't able to understand what's what, everything was just weird. I live in Denmark, it might be different in other countries.

I unfortunately had to move away from my Lidl & I miss it immensely. I would get all my shopping from Lidl & be quite decadent when there was a particular country being featured in the store. French week would be my favourite - I would stock up on on French produce, Cheese, Pate, snails, fish soup, wine & Cremant. Compared to Aldi which sells family favourites & more - Lidl hits the 'Waitrose' shopper who like Slightly different tastes. The Charcuterie & cheese in Lidl is excellent - nothing but compliments from me. Sorry - the teacher shoe, I thought more Christian youth leader or trendy vicar, maybe a nun who plays guitar at events, schools, I couldn't help myself - the need to add to your description of the 'traisandal' was too much - I couldn't stop myself. Great vlog.

I think it might be worth exploring videos about more than just shopping. No judgement, I definitely enjoyed your other channel, and I totally support your shift into more than just luxury. Your personality is so cool and down to earth and you have that special quality which makes you seem like you're "on our side," so to speak. My absolute fav videos on your other channel were actually the ones where you tell anecdotes about your experiences(ghosts, being a broke student, how you ended up in your career), and I would love to see more about your thoughts and feelings about life, and living it. Like you have a sort of 'cafe philosophy' stream of consciousness that is really fun to watch/listen to. In response to some of your other videos, I too have sold almost all of my luxury goods this year(3 of 4 Chanel backpacks, 6 of 7 LV items, etc..). I have collected select antique oil paintings for like 6 or 7 years and they bring me so much more joy than the luxury goods. I look at them/am in front of them so much more frequently than the bags and I REALLY am so much satisfied with this personal shift in how I use my funds and time.

Hey Sophie! Here in Germany Lidl is one of the most popular supermarket and I felt the variety of products and the construction looked quite similar to our supermarkets. I go there on a regular basis and prices are pretty good. And you might be surprised that the quality of the Lidl products like "Cien" do have an excellent reputation and very often better quality than the original which is proved by independent authorities like Stiftung Warentest.

Love these new videos and the breadth of what you’re covering across your channels, because a swathe of us mix it up with a luxury purchase alongside a shop at Lidl…and another time a trip to Matalan with a food shop at Waitrose or farm shop. It would be good with food shop videos to keep some foods as “control products” so you can really compare price and quality between each supermarket. I actually rate Waitrose meat and fish quality above Lidl but I think fruit and veg is better at Lidl…especially with price and regularity of purchase…

I love Aldi and Lidl. Before I began shopping at either one, I hated grocery shopping, and went as infrequently as possible. But after I discovered Lidl and Aldi, I am in either one of them at least twice a week, sometimes even 5 times, so I have to rotate between 3 different Aldi's and two Lidl locations, so that they dont think I am homeless or something. I just Love being in there.

In the US aldi offers more organic and non GMO product than US produces. Prices are far better. I do everything I can from Aldi and do a much smaller shop for anything i cant find. Only total fail is the pet food. The center isle is called the Isle of Shame, and products go viral. Lots of fun.

I have an ALDI and a LIDL close to the holiday's house (too remote for a big supermarket, you have to drive for 10m to get to one of those), so I "know" them well. Usually, the fresh produce is local, so the quality depends of where you live. I cannot speak for the fish and meat, but I'm not a fan. The milk derivatives are usually good. The bread is the usual supermarket bread, the dought is shipped there. This is the same for every supermarket, even the high-end ones. Only a "true" bakery does them differently. The green hand wash (which yours doesn't have) is a banger. The crackler's aisle is a banger as well, but you have to find what you like.

“Lidl" is a German discount supermarket chain. The name "Lidl" is derived from the surname of the company's founder, Josef Schwarz. He established the first Lidl store in 1930 in Germany. Lidl is owned by the The Schwarz Group, a German multinational retailer that operates stores under the Lidl and Kaufland brands. It is the largest European retailer and the fourth-largest retailer in the world by revenue.

Dieter Schwarz, Josef Schwarz’ son, bought the right to use the name „Lidl“ from a painter and teacher, Ludwig Lidl. In 1858 the first Lidl opened in Heilbronn, Germany, and Josef Schwarz worked for the company. He made a career and the company was named Lidl & Schwarz. The markets they run were named „Handelshof“, later „Kaufland“. When his son Dieter started to do his own career, he could not use the name Lidl & Schwarz for his discount markets. So he bought the name from the teacher, because he did not want to name his shops „Schwarzmarkt“, what means black market…😉 When Josef Schwarz died in 1977, Dieter Schwarz took over Lidl&Schwarz, and now there are the full range supplier Kaufland and the discounter Lidl, since 1989 expanding in over 30 countries even in the US.

This was so interesting Sophie, I have done my weekly shop at my local Lidl virtually every week for the past few years. I get almost all my fruit and veg there, but couldn’t do a complete shop there so do top up with other things in other shops as well. Whilst some flock to the middle isles every week for the bargains, I find they are only bargains if you actually NEED the items 😂. I also find that I get used to enjoying a certain item and then they suddenly stop stocking it and you never see it again. P.S. please tell David that what’s in the lookalike Molton Brown bottles is “definitely “ not anything like the quality of MB 🤣😆🥰. Great video thank you, keep them coming please xxx

In the states stores like Walmart, target, aldi and most grocery stores have there own private labels that are basically made in the same factorys that main labels. There are just cheaper when they are store brands.

Your first experience of the weird aisle! 😂 When you go to Tesco, can you have a shop around F+F clothing? I personally love a lot of their stuff. There's currently some Chanel type jackets for £35 each. You'll know when you see them!

I think Lidl excels at its Middle of Lidl aisle, especially for international food, as well as its bakery. The downside is that the meat I buy goes off rather quickly and some of their own brand products are a challenge (my ex bought some tortillas and they broke instead of folding). I second that I'd love to see you go to a local farmer's market!
