It's been fantastic watching all these third party companies take the core 5e systems into their own creative direction. Gives options for everyone to enjoy without having to give Hasbro a dime anymore.

How I saw it, is that level 1 character aren't really stronger, they just have more options.

I've been playing in a ToV campaign for nearly a year. Started in beta with playtest material. We also struggled staying standing against the insane power and quantity of creatures thrown at us (we played the pre-written Caverns of the Spore Lord adventure and it was brutal). Just look up the stats of a Skullbloom and know they were throwing between 3 and 8 of them at a time towards 4 level 1 characters and up to 32 (with bad dice rolls) at level 2. We've since spun it off into a continuing campaign now at level 4 and are really enjoying it. The luck system is really cool but we've not touched Doom points either. I'm planning on converting a 5e game I'm running to ToV at some point to add a few more options.

Ran my first ToV session last week. I'm running a higher level game using a module from @DMStash. Before getting into the meat of the campaign, I ran the Treant encounter from your book. I totally had to beef up enemies, because their characters were a bit overpowered, players had a blast. Loved that whole concept! The encounter allowed players to shake out any issues and learn how ToV differs. I had one player multi class and you could tell he wasn't in love with his character. Luck mechanic is definitely a win as it makes players less disappointed when they fail a roll. I will say that the paper creation was a bit challenging, as I DM for teens and they really only know how to use the D&DBeyond character creation tool.

I'm still working on adapting details from the Tal'dorei / Wildemount setting to ToV. But I'm looking forward to running ToV, which I consider as D&D 5.75

I ran my first ToV session couple of weeks ago, next one is this weekend. Only combat encounter Had three PCs against against 2 mastiffs and 2 Ratkin bandits. The mechanist and the ranger took some solid shots but the witch (kobold press class I converted to ToV) kept them standing and they defeated them. Definitely glass canons at level 1 compared to 5E level one. Luck is awesome. Haven’t had the chance to put doom into play. Otherwise, the game was fairly standard 5E get to know each other, learn our abilities, get hooked 5E game. Everyone had a great time. :)

Wow, if ToV level 1 is more brutal than 5e, that sounds terrible because 5e is already way more deadly at levels 1 and 2 than any other point in the game.

@@DeclanMecha wasn’t more brutal. They were outnumbered which is almost certain death in 5E at level 1 in practice. I intentionally pushed it a bit because I wanted to test the system. I had already established that this trade route was well guarded and patrolled so if they were getting toasted I had a way to save them. Normally I don’t have deus ex machina type saves, but since this was all newish I felt it was appropriate. (Midgard campaign, Scenario was escort some wagons, bandits have been getting lucky so extra muscle needed, Hossars are patrolling but after they beat the bandits they find a note with weeks worth of hossar patrol information and good ambush points…griffon knight that patrols wasn’t in the information and they get lucky that he’s there at this time and arrives during the fight or right after) Either way we were impressed with how good level 1 felt. Same HP, but more options. Totally recommend so far.

Thanks for the video! I’m interested in hearing your ongoing perspective of Tales of the Valiant vs D&D 2024 and even if you played Level Up Advanced 5e.

Lol, steriods are a better example than crack. In the US, many use the term "on crack" as if there was any adavantage to using crack over steriods.

I think every creature cr 1/8 to 10 should get 1 doom point, cr 11 and beyond 2 doom points. Plus, if a character rolls a nat 1 the creature gets a doom point. Just my opinion

One of the things I noticed about TotV monsters is they have a bunch of hit points + more abilities than their 5e monster counterparts. For example a 5e commoner has 4 hp while the TotV commoner has 8 hp and a combat ability. I have seen some monsters in TotV having 50 or above hp at cr2.

It’s great that you’re covering TotV, Mr. T. I’ve been trying it myself and, honestly, those Heroic and Epic Boons at 10th and 20th level are very cool. They feel like what D&D was attempting to do with their playtest material, but better. They’re all tailored talents (or feats) to each class. My only wish would be to have more options. Maybe Kobold Press will make a new book of class options in the future; that would be awesome.

I call them resolve points. Much more thematic, especially in contrast to doom.

I'm starting to prep Ptolus campaign but using the CS. The setting seems amazing. And I'm hardly interested in Tales of the Valiant. If I'm ever going back to 5E waters it will probably be with A5E.

So I'm warming up to the players handbook. What would sell me on it is a players guide expansion with all the midgard hero tome, divine magic 1&2 subclasses converted to Tov along with the spells. And class specific talents to make each class truly feel unique (10 each).I don't mind converting these classes but my players would rather not. They would prefer to use what is in front of them without extra work..

This'll be super, as I'd like to get all the info I can before committing. And being broke means I have time, whether I want it or not. 🙂 Thinking of replacing my two stacks of 5e books with ToV, and also hoping some 5e issues get fixed.

Thats really kool! I would like to learn how the Mechanic compares to the Artificer...which Im really glad that KP put in as a core class! And while your foot size is interesting, that doesn't answer the real question, Mr T! ...Do you zip then button, or button then zip your pants? ...Also, Left sock or Right sock first?

I feel that OneDnD hype overshadows TotV because it fixes a number of things from 5E, but I’m not sure what TotV improved on… More options doesn’t necessarily mean better. What does TotV actually do better than 5E? Also, your initiative system seems fine for fights against single enemies or small groups of them, but how does it work against large groups? It’s usually very bad for players when a lot of enemies get to all take their turn at the same time…

  • @MrTarrasque

I say in the video, I make small groups when they are fighting large groups. 90% of the time that means grouping certain races or types together. All those groups have a different initiative number and the rest is exactly the same.

@@MrTarrasque oh, I do something similar then. My house rule is that players can always choose to lower their initiative instead of taking their turn and go later in the round. Functionally it allows a cluster of players to go in any order they want.

@avengingblowfish9653 I see, but then still somebody should use their action/bonus action/movement in their turn and not in one big group turn. I sometimes have a player use their action, then another player uses theirs, then the first uses their bonus action and movement,…. That sort of stuff.
