Hey kids, it's your BLOOZ BUDDY Uncle Ben Eller, and my blues playing sucks! Maybe my buddy @coreycongilio can help me out? I hooked up with him for a lesson at @sweetwater Gearferst 2023, and I'm bringing you all along for the ride!
In this lesson, Corey shows me his approach to jazzing up his blues playing with arpeggios, passing tones, chromatics, and more. There's so much good stuff to learn here, Corey is a MASTER of playing over these changes! Get into it!
We are both playing through Boss Katana's, with guitars provided by the Sweetwater Gear Exchange! I found me a lovely Tom Anderson here that nearly came home with me... so nice.
Enjoy, and grab that bonus lesson + backing track on my Patreon page today!!!

It's not a flat third it's a sharp 9 from the ALT dominant harmony. Study your melodic minor
Had a BLAST doing this with BE! I'm honored to be on the channel, buddy! Blues on y'all!

You and Ben are at the top of my “always watch” list on KZread. It’s so great seeing you guys hangin’ and jammin’. Excellent lesson.
Now Ben understands how we feel when we see him play and try to play what he plays :)
One of the most compelling things about this video for me is the ease of which both of you know the fretboard, theory, and chords. Fascinating stuff, as I struggle to arpeggiate the first inversion of a Cm scale...
The etude part is important because it helps the muscle memory for the shapes, but also for cementing the corresponding harmony in your ear.
Loved this session. Corey is so great!! Loved how you sounded together and the discussion was really very helpful. Thanks Ben !
Oh this was a fun one! Loved watching Corey play, loved watching Uncle Ben learn, loved the chemistry between you guys. Great stuff
This is super helpful! There was this significant gap of the blues that I enjoyed hearing, and the painfully rudimentary blues I could play. This points me in the right direction, big time. I've got a bunch of new stuff to practice now. Thanks Ben and @coreycongilio
Love that playing and phrasing! Puts a smile on my face, when I hear someone play the blues like this! 🖤 Thanks to Ben for this Video!
Thanks Uncle Ben, really luv the variety of your lessons, Corey is like awesome! Much luv 😍👍
Wow great collaboration, thanks for re- igniting the light bulbs in my head(hands).
Oh shit! I just discovered Corey's channel a few days ago and now this! Dope!
Thank you both for a great lesson. It looks like you both were having a great time. Thank you for sharing the video and lesson.
I need more of this kind of a lesson. I’ve played for over 35 years and I’ve won guitar contests and been known as a good metal/rock player. But I say that knowing I absolutely suck when it comes to so many areas of playing. For instance I never really loved the blues so I am so very lacking in this area. Whenever someone began a blues progression I go from a seemingly good guitar player to a day one beginner in an instant. It’s something that has plagued my playing for years. It’s not that I want to be known as some amazing blues player necessarily because it’s just not in my blood to concentrate on that style. But I think I could expand my playing greatly by becoming more comfortable in this vein. I’d probably enjoy this style more too by being able to speak the language better. Never stop learning everyone! Great video.
I've been a rock/metal player for nearly 40 years and, as I got older, I realized my playing was getting less metal and more blues. I'd always appreciated blues players but I was all about speed and sweeping and on and on. Suddenly guys like Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Jared James Nichols and Corey were putting a smile on my face more than Jason Richardson, Tim Henson or Tosin Abasi. Just getting old I guess. 😉

If you e been playing for 40 years, and assuming you started when you were 15, that puts you at 55 years old. You’re not getting old. You ARE old. Welcome to the club.
Thank you ,thank you thank you ! This was a real treat. I am a guy who learned by ear as a kid (at age 9, watching my biological Dad (lol), my uncles and cousins sit around playing guitar and drinking every time they got together) I developed some bad habits guitar wise and now at age 57, I am diving into uncharted territory. I discovered your channel around 3 years ago. I never knew the mechanics of alternate picking, true arpeggios etc. I always played from the gut. It sucked in a way though because my "guitar heroes" (Jimi, Ritchie Blackmore, Jerry Reed, Eddie, Jan Ackerman, Terry Kath, Steve Howe, Roy Clark etc) seemed so untouchable to me. I always wanted to grasp the concepts and structures that you provide on your channel. I apologize for the long winded post...I just wanted to say thank you so much for the heart felt effort that you provide on your channel. You are a class act, sir!
Cory is a monster with blues .... erm playing in general. love his stuff - great to see you embracing other styles
Fantastic conversation, thanks for sharing! Also appreciate using interval names, that is so helpful in following.
Great job Ben and Corey! So many of us are right at this spot where the old, “one scale fits all” approach either just doesn’t work or our solos are boring. This will be a big help!
It’s so awesome to you two jamming together!
EPIC lesson. Looking forward to practicing this.
In my 20+ years as a guitar player lurking on KZread, this video cut through the static for me more than any (in particular Joe Pass on the bottom, Eric Clapton on the top). Thanks dudes.

Thanks for the great vid as always, Ben! 👍
Woah corey is an absolute blues God! Nice vid as always uncle ben! and the tele is 🥰😍😍
Very cool. I think I will hug my stepson tonight (first time ever) and tell him it's okay if he wants to be a blues man one day.
Sweet man, Corey's super cool! Really enjoyed the jams and the tips. Blues on!
I missed the following 45 seconds of what you said after Francis bubble trousers because I was laughing!!
Here's the theory that'll open up your blues understanding. Look at the notes of your 1-4-5 A7 blues progression. They all contain 1,3,5,m7 notes. In each chord you'll see a tritone between the 3rd and m7 and they are all within a semitone of each other. Chord 1 C# and G, slide that shape down a semitone C and F# that's chord 4. If you slide up a semitone to D and G# that's chord 5. When playing through the changes target the m7 note moving down a semitone when the chord changes to D7. You've gone from G (m7th in A7) to F# (3rd in D7). This 7th to 3rd movement is key to flowing naturally through the changes. You can do the same moving from chord 1 to chord 5. Try G and slide up to G# again you've gone from m7th to 3rd.

Couple yrs ago you cranked me onto Andy, and the Crack the code guy?? I wanna thankyou Fer all the shit you work hard at presenting us bitches mang...truethanks!!!
Awesome video, very useful and fun!
Fantastic lesson. Cheers!
When you play a minor third over a dominant chord, you're implying the #9. That's why it works
@soofitnsexy
Жыл бұрын
WELL the sharp 9 is a minor 3rd.....but why does it work??? Nice comment!!
So much jazz in his playing
Thanks Uncle Ben and Corey !
This is the perfect video for me right now. I need more better flavor and he's got all the ingredients!
This is my kind of crossover content: thanks!
Corey is a beast uncle Ben what a great mash of 2 platforms I enjoy 🤘🏻
I find the best ways to break out of the Blue Lawyer cliches is to add some more chromaticism. And maybe chill with the bends and instead incorporate more PRE bends.
Love that green on that tele
@HarlanHarvey76
Жыл бұрын
I've always wanted that green finish over the top of a 3 tone burst with areas of the green worn off so the sunburst shines through. - but I can't stand a fake reliced guitar so I'm S.O L.....😔
Amazing lesson/video, Uncle Ben! Some of those licks remind me a bit of Warren DeMartini (I always remember it as the "You're in Love" lick).
This was tons of fun, thanks!
I also can't do anything but laugh when some of those notes land. That was great.
Wow. Just wow. I almost understand what you guys are talking about. But arpeggios added to to do list...and Cory's site
i always wanted a guitar like the one you had in the mop intro riff video it would be cool if you show us how to do that
I was just dreaming about the guitars I can't buy looking at Sweetwater and came across the Hot Dog Kramer. That thing is so sweet. Hilarious paint job, but I love it. Saw Ben on the video spot ✌🏼
Man your friend has such great blues phrasing!

The keys to the blues-rari? I'm getting a Michael Angelo Batio "I'll give you the keys to the Lamborghini" vibe.
I just found your glizzycaster reaction while looking at kramers and it makes me wanna buy it
Love Corey's playing! Damn!
Nice Anderson you're holding there, Uncle Ben! Best-looking superstrats in the world (totally not biased here XD)
cool ideas, rock on dudes
anyone know who this francis bubble-trousers he keeps referring to is? He's mentioned him in like 20 videos
From a jazz perspective, you wouldn't think of it as b3, but #9, tension over a dominant chord.
So fun! I know exactly what you mean Ben, when I'm pleasantly surprised by a guitarist's playing, I laugh too, followed by a "Yes! Hell ya!" It's just so tasty, it tickles your brain.
This inspired me to play some blues
Such a cool video
Step Dad always has the blues....cause he really sucks at guitar and needs to pay more attention to uncle ben...lmao!!! Another great one,Ole'Dad needs to "step" out of the metal box and broaden his guitar skills...thats why i suck at guitar! Lmao! At least i am trying new things and this one helps alot! Thanks again Uncle Ben!🤘🤘🤘
That HSS strat is gorgeous
I love Cory. I watch all his stuff now and I am an ex 80’s metal head.
EXCELLENT...Uncle Blues!
My Stepdad Blues Licks sucked too but everything changed the day I switched to "Cool Uncle" Blues Licks.

Hell yeah !
6:53 - actually you can find it in other traditional - "anchient" rooted - music where the instrumental version is naturally grown out from the simple, only singed traditional folklore, without any education. Most of the bands - whats have nothing to do with blues - never heard, so tis not coming from there - plays major chords under minor melodies, and lot of the times the chords don't really have a functional connection - because the do all by ear, and they only know the song. So the chords are coming from the song, they play a simplier version of the melody, with the strongest overtones (what generates a major chord) for example, an A minor pentatonic song, has A, C, D, E and G - or if its not that pentatonic, even can have a B somewhere, all major. And the blue notes like between the major minor 3rd or between the diminished 5th and the perfect 5th are there too in the melodies, as these are coming from the physical nature of the sounds. That's why you can find these in Bartoks music, for example, as he was really into these type of music. And didn't really experienced blues or jazz.
I feel like everyone of bens videos has gold in it.
I'm a metal player too but Stevie Ray Vaughan makes me want to play the blues more.
To the woodshed I go....
What’s the background music (in the beginning)?Sounds killer.
13:13 imagine a slow motion guy grilling some burgers, wife kisses him on the cheek. Kids playing with the dog while running through the sprinklers. You hear "ask your doctor if Cialis is right for you" i'm just a product of the 2000s
I love Corey's last name. It rolls off the tongue. Coined by the Germans in 1904, they founded the name, which in German means...

One last thing Uncle Ben.....to play blues you need a $30,000+ 1960 something Gibson guitar.
I'm ignorant.!..but not that bad...@ 8:38 what arpeggios please is Corey Congilio playing.? I love this combination of an what I think is a Dom7 arpeggio answered with Pentecostal. But please the arps names???🙃
Francis Bubbletrousers 😂😂😂
awesome
I got the even more blues
Unfortunately as a new player, I was lost after the first minute 😂, it’s like y’all are talking in a foreign language
Fuckin fantastic stuff gentlemen!! Damn

Yeah as far as I know, should be fine.
Great stuff. Many people (especially certain wannabe Yngwies and Satrianis) say that blues is something very simple and lazy. Yes, the fundamentals are easy. Mastering blues? It takes either ages or phenomenal talent.
Francis. Bubbletrousers? 😵💫
Turns out that I am a fan of Blazz and I didn't even know about it until now.
love Cory’s channel! been following him for about a year and the last blues Jam i went too, my homeboys called me a jazzy little bitch😅
I still dont understand why playing basically an A minor pentatonic over a major I/IV/V etc. How does that even sound so good?
