The story of the ministry of Bishop Oko Bortei-Doku is an unusual one. To begin with he was one of just a handful of people who came directly from school (KNUST) into full time ministry. Though this has become a more common practice in UD it was not so in 1998.
The second unusual thing about Bishop Oko’s Ministry was that he was assigned by Bishop Dag, to take care of the young people, the children! Today, there are a good number of men involved in SAVED but this was not common practice in churches in 1998! Bishop Dag seemed to know even then that his vision for children would be fulfilled through this young man.
Mark 10:13-14 KJV
[13] And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
[14] But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Ps Oko was ordained a Reverend in 2003. He became the channel through which young children began to hear the messages of Bishop Dag. They were taught how to have a quiet time; they were taught scriptures; they were taught how to win souls. They learnt to love camps and they learnt to love our Prophets voice.
There were a number of highly significant aspects of this ministry. Under Rev Oko’s tutelage and by the instruction of Bishop Dag the SAVED children began to learn how to play instruments. And in a relatively short time all instruments in the children’s church were played by the children themselves. Then came the formation of The Olives, young boys and girls between the ages of 8-12 brought together as a choir and playing their own instruments. With these skills, they traveled the nations and wowed the churches as people began to see what could be done with children if only they would be taken seriously!
The effect of Rev Oko on the lives of the children of Lighthouse Chapel is another story altogether. If you take a look at churches and missions with pastors and missionaries aged 31 and below, you would be looking at his fruits. Not only did he teach them the Bible, music and church - he also became their lifeline through the turbulent teenage years of their lives. As the children battled the world and its issues - drugs, immorality, porn, homosexuality- it was to their pastor that they turned to for counsel, for correction and for guidance.
The there was the highlight of the year for the young ones - SHOMCOM. There used to be an annual Homecoming of Lighthouse churches and SHOMCOM was the equivalent for SAVED - it was the SAVED Homecoming. The pictures speak for themselves but suffice it to say the children came in their numbers!! It was their camp and it was their time to shine!
Rev Oko was also a member of a Bishop Dag’s minstrels - the Bee Dees. Together with Bishop Johnny, ES Henrietta-Ariel and LP Ellen, they wowed the church at every convention and Miracle Wave meeting and indeed brought down refreshing, anointing and joy!
After several years with SAVED it was time for Rev Oko to move on. He was consecrated a Bishop in 2014 and with that came the move into the adult congregation of the Qodesh where he pastored a service for 3 years.
The ministry of a Bishop is marked by transfers and in 2018 Bishop Oko moved to join the army of missionaries being sent to the nations. He is currently building a church in Youpogon, Côte D’Ivoire, speaking French and changing lives!
His ministry to the children continues as he remains the main speaker at SHOMCOM and continues to hold camps for young people when time allows.
Bishop Oko is married to LP Ama and they have 3 children, Samuel, Marie and Angel.
