The SLR uses the air conditioning to cool the fuel. When a/c has a leak (no refrigerant), you will get a fuel warning message and no cold air out of a/c. Leaking a/c pressure switch is a common issue.

as a mechanic i love learning new things everyday, and today i learned that the SLR uses the ac refrigerant to cool the fuel

The SLR uses the AC to cool the fuel system, since the air conditioning stopped working the problems are likely related. Could be an issue with the air conditioning system or a control module.

Automatic like when Ed’s telling the story.

Ed, due to the location of the side exhausts, the fuel line gets very hot. Mercedes keeps the fuel in the line from vaporizing by incorporating the A/C to cool the fuel lines. The A/C turns on automatically when the fuel line reaches a certain temperature.This is most likely why you were unable to turn off the A/C as the car was overriding your attempts to turn off the A/C. The SLR should not be driven with a broken A/C system for this reason

If that is the cause then where was the vapor actually sourcing from to enter the cabin? If you have a constant flow of fuel in a closed line moving to the engine fuel rail and consumed how and where would it escape into the cabin if it wasn’t escaping via the trunk mounted venting system?

Cannonballs or gumballs are such an experience I highly recommend every serious enthusiast does one. I did a 900 mile trip around my home state 5 years ago and made friends and memories I'll have for life.

Crazier things have happened. When people drive super cars like they would a rental, problems always pop up- most super car owners drive it like twice a week if they’re retired and only rip a 0-60 run every now and then

Fun trivia: Mercedes Benz was embarrassed & pissed that Chrysler built the ME Four Twelve supercar from the ground up within a year while the SLR took way longer, cost more, and yet couldn’t outperform the ME Four Twelve that Mercedes basically canceled plans for it in favor of the SLR McLaren.

Mercedes was mad at Chrysler because Chrysler lied about their financial viability (they were rebating themselves into bankruptcy in order to boost sales) that way Mercedes would buy Chrysler and save them from collapse.

I love how these rally affect so many people positively. Including myself fortunately. I had the most serendipitous experience on the tail of the dragon with this crazy group of cars. Ripping the corners in my tightened up honda fit with the blue 911 in front and the gray 600lt following behind me was so special. It will be a fond memory I'll hold on to forever. Just amazing that i could feel like apart of the rally for a moment in time. I can only imagine the fun you'd have actually driving a car like that.

Well it was pretty hot!. But as I told you Ed, shoulda brought an Alfa because they are reliable😂😂😂 All 3 Alfas I brought to GR over the years made it fine😀 I can see you doing GR in a beautiful classic Alfa! Maybe a 33 Stradale😀

Sooooo what was the issue with the Gas fumes in the SLR? This reminds me of the Treasure hunt rallies I used to help organise in my Teens and early 20's, 700 to 800 Km's with Girlfriends navigating over a weekend solving destinations from clues with CB's and Maps with the occasional "Fox Hunt" (Radio direction finder) lunch stop for further instruction all at "Road legal" speeds. My car looked like a porcupine with CB aerials and all sorts of gadgets mounted inside and we had a blast even without all the modern GPS and Mapping tech with lots of laughs and stories to relate afterwards and in the mid 1980's it was a heck of a way to spend a long weekend.

The reason the ac was running constantly is because a probably has a fuel cooling system where the cold ac charge goes to a canister that has fuel return line running in the middle of it to cool the fuel on the way back to the tank. it sound like you have a fuel leak most likely on the return side and it was not cooling the way the computer expected.

You bought some Fiji water from me sir. I noticed you left the door open at the pump. It makes sense now.

When swapping from one of your exotic cars into one of your multiple other exotic cars is "problem solving" you've done right in life.

It seems to me that Car Trek set you up nicely on how to deal with these issues on a road trip

I recommend a B8T 4.2 RS5 for one of your rallies.

I have a red 2005 Chevy Cavalier with a 2.2 Ecotech and she doesn't have any of those problems. 150,000 and she runs like a top, cold AC and 30 MPG. Perhaps you can find one of your own. If it not exotic enough for your tastes maybe you can screw one of those ironing boards on the trunk lid. I guess the guys call them spoilers but they remind me of ironing boards. I couldn't stand having cars that constantly break down. They are pretty though.

I guess the lesson here is you can buy the high end flashy cars for a road trip and have the same problems as driving a Chevy just more expensive to fix.

It’s possible the SLR uses the air conditioning refrigerant to cool the fuel. With the air conditioning broken, the fuel temperature will be too high.

Could have been when Paris Hilton scrapped the car driving out of the dealership. Lol.

What you consider the dark age is what I regularly use on normal road trips (cause I kinda just ignore the speed limits on the highways)
