My Sister's Keeper

Фильм және анимация

Sara and Brian Fitzgeralds life with their young son and their two-year-old daughter, Kate, is forever altered when they learn that Kate has leukemia. The parents only hope is to conceive another child, specifically intended to save Kates life. For some, such genetic engineering would raise both moral and ethical questions; for the Fitzgeralds, Sara in particular, there is no choice but to do whatever it takes to keep Kate alive. And what it takes is Anna.
Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) and Anna (Abigail Breslin) share a bond closer than most sisters: though Kate is older, she relies on her little sisterâ in fact, her life depends on Anna.
Directed by Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook), My Sisters Keeper stars Cameron Diaz (What Happens in Vegas), Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Academy Award® nominee Alec Baldwin (The Cooler, TVs 30 Rock), Jason Patric (In the Valley of Elah) and Academy Award® nominee Joan Cusack (In & Out, Working Girl). The screenplay is by Jeremy Leven (The Notebook) and Nick Cassavetes, based on the novel by Jodi Picoult.

The first time I heard of this story my reaction to creating a child with the intent to harvest parts for another was that it was disgusting, horrific even. I stand by that. One has infinite value, "we will do anything to save our child", the other has no value, "even sacrifice another one of our children." How do you take everything into consideration and still reconcile that?

8 hospitalizations in 11 years; no wonder Anna's Guardian ad Litem tore into her mother. At the age of her first procedure; Anna wouldn't even have been old enough to understand the risks involved with bone marrow transplant.

The first procedures were technically harvesting her umbilical cord & blood from birth-5...I forget how old she was with the first marrow transplant; but she was way too young to understand or consent. Honestly if marrow is a one time thing with a high disease cure rate it's a maybe; but not in the scenario this story portrays.

I first watched this movie in my Religious Studies lesson in year 11. We were learning about the attitudes to ‘designer’ babies. This movie addresses the issue so well because it shows two versions of the case: 1. Firstly, it shows that a test tube baby can help save a sick and dying child 2. However secondly, the test tube baby does not a right to their own body and therefore are a kind of ‘farm’ of spare parts for their dying sibling. This movie shows this amazingly and it always makes me tear up because even though Anna is the main character and most main characters are the one to root for, you can’t help but see and understand where her mother is coming from. It is only when we find out that Kate told her sister to go ahead and fight for the rights to her own body. All because Kate was ready to go, to die. It’s a tough watch because no parent should have to bury their child and that is how the movie ends. It is so beautiful and really puts that perspective on the viewer and shows that life is unfair and takes lives away, even when we fight to keep those people alive. All we have to do, in that circumstance, is believe in what the sick person wants and if the sick person wants to live, they can fight, but if they think that they are ready to die, then they should be able to do that too. It’s a hard hitting story with a beautifully solemn and meaningful background to it, a context that is very real today.

It's just what if her sister never agreed to that, would Anna's choice be ok?

@@amalakram8755 Absolutely it would, Kate receiving the body parts are besides the point, Anna has her own bodily autonomy and it is a human right to be able to choose what to do with her own body.
