Thank you for sharing your story. I am a sepsis survivor just over a year and I have been searching for post sepsis answers to deal with how it's changed me and my life and I'm more fortunate than most. By the time I was rushed to the hospital I was in full blown septic shock. Almost died twice the first 48 hours. The aftermath has been life changing as you know. Your story helps a lot. So little is out there about survivors stories. No one can understand what it does to you unless you have experienced it. Just so you know I'm in Texas USA so your story is traveling world wide helping others. You are a special, brave young lady. Thank you again.

You're welcome to msg me, I'm 40 months post Sepsis (the first time now) but I've had it every year since. I am a Sepsis survivor too.... unfortunately as a side effect of medications they gave me I had both of my lower legs and half of my fingers amputated. 2 comas over a month, the first time they woke me up after a week I had double pneumonia and it kicked in within a few hours so back into the coma I went for about 3.5 weeks. Had to learn how to read and write again and also how to walk with new prosthetic legs with over a 10.5 month stay in hospital, but yeah. This life is not a joy. I find some days very hard to get through, other days I cope alright by distracting myself. I wish you the best in your recovery. ..

I actually avoided Drs care for this reason! I would have cheerfully lost a leg at one point and my right arm another but knew it would put me at risk of being tied to Dr care forever if they didn't kill me first with neglect! I literally would rather die and nearly did many times! If you are not bitter against God I would share a wonderful hope from the God who hates what is going on here...

I'm not religious, but I pass no judgement on those who are or others beliefs. I am very angry at what happened to me, but of course these not much I can do :-( . I didn't get a choice in what happened to me. I was put into a coma and my parents told Drs and specialists they didn't care what happened as long as I was alive.... they weren't told the results of the medications I was being given-- a trial adrenaline It turns out... so I get to live the rest of my life knowing they did this to me and there's nothing I can do about it, but I suffer major depressive stages-- been in one about 9 months now, but I keep going for my mum, my niece and my nephews. I wouldn't bother otherwise. Trust me on that.

int4d This message is for you and others who've had sepsis.. How did you get sepsis? How long after injury did the symptoms begin? Im wondering...because I became fatigue and confused.. forgetful and the doctors wont give a diagnostic exam.. Its been over 14 months since getting sick after injury..after.. i got injured 4 more times from a cat and another dog.. I know that injuries from an animal can pass..all kinds of diseases to humans ..

@Love is Better. There are actually Sepsis groups on Facebook if you want to know more :-) My sepsis literally came on overnight. I was on massive doses of pain killers for an unrelated reason so I felt very little pain. I collapsed in our laundry that day from an undiagnosed and unfelt 6CM KIDNEY STONE GROWN IN MY ONLY KIDNEY and blocked everything that backed up and turned septic. Then my hell on Earth began. If you aren't happy with your diagnosis or help you can always get a second, third, fourth, fifth opinion. Or maybe see a blood specialist so they can do extra tests. Maybe you have literally got chronic fatigue?

Thank you for your telling your story Rachel. I'm sure it wasn't easy to relive some of those events at the hospital and afterwards. I had sepsis this August. I'd been out walking a dog I just adopted (Buddy) and tripped over a section of sidewalk that a root from a nearby tree had raised. I fell down hard on my knees but there was little damage. My knees did hurt though. I managed to walk home and since I was going to the local instant care that afternoon to see a doctor about my returning chronic respiratory infection I also mentioned my fall and that my knees/legs hurt more than I thought they should. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic for my respiratory infection and said to keep an eye on my legs. Two days later I'm back at the instacare location with my legs hurting more. Again I'm sent home with instructions to stay off my feet. At this point the skin on my leg was red and warm to the touch compared to my right leg. I feared cellulitis, something I had had on my right leg three years previous. Long story short, over the week I kept going back to the instacare and saying my leg really hurt and they'd send me back home only to have me back a day or two later. I finally ended up in the ER with a high fever and my leg so hot that the nurses put towels soaked in ice water on them and within a few minutes they'd change them out and comment on how hot they towels had become. So I was in the hospital, in a very uncomfortable bed and my left leg hurting so bad and feeling so tender that the sheet below felt like my leg was resting on broken glass. I was in the hospital for 5 days total, it would have been 4 days but the day they wanted to send me home my feet and lower legs turned back. (Luckily, not from gangrene, just blood pooling from standing up after being in bed for 4 days. It was a scary few hours there though. I made it home with my release papers, one of which said I had had cellulitis and sepsis. I had no clue what sepsis was but it explained why for the first time since I was 8 doctors and nurses kept commenting how worried they were for me. (if you want to hear the story of how I was hours away from dying back then the story is a good one.) . I hadn't even been aware of the word sepsis before much less what it meant. All I can say is that for the next 6-8 weeks the pain in my legs was the worst pain I'd ever experienced. It faded very slowly and my legs are still giving me problems (I also have lymphedema in both legs, worse in the left leg.). After watching some of the videos of sepsis victims/survivors/amputees I count myself lucky I got off as well as I did. It was hell but I came out of it okay, eventually. I never want to go through that again.

I am also a post sepsis survivor! Mine was so bad that my kidneys failed lungs was failing and so was my heart. I was on a bipap for about 3 weeks dialysis for about the same amount of time. I don't remember being put in the hospital. I remember going to the ER and them telling me my white count was over 300000!! I was in the icu over a month not able to do nothing. Thank goodness I'm on the mend. Dr said my kidneys will probably never heal all the way but I'm not on dialysis for now Dr said probably be back on dialysis in 3years. Just thankful I'm alive. Thanks for sharing your story.

i had sepsis and was in hospital for 3 months. i had 105 degree f fever. cold sweats and non stop shivering with the most intense pain in my head and legs. i could not WALK or even think straight. when i got to hospital i started hallucinating and hearing voices in my head like a radio show. then soon after i completely lost the hearing in my right ear and never got it back but still hallucinated voices and people for weeks. (this was 2 Novembers ago). while in hospital i had to relearn to walk. i also had endocarditis in my heart and cellulitis in my hand that they had to cut out. i was on dilaudid and oxycontin every 3 hours for 3 months because the pain was so severe until i had a blood transfusion 2 weeks into the stay and was on antibiotics iv for the whole time and also ativan because i was panicking i felt like i wasn't going to make it put alive. until the the transfusion the pain was soo bad that i couldn't even get up to use the bathroom and my boyfriend stayed the whole time with me and i had to use a bed pan. eventually the pain started to lift slowly day by day but i still couldn't walk and had severe leg pain. it hurt relearning to walk but i did it. and then the day i left they gave me a 15 day script and for oxycontin and morphine and sent me home. oh and I had my own room the whole time because o was super contagious. and had to get sponge baths which was embarrassing and really i screamed and cried when the nurse turned me over because it was so painful like i had been hit by a truck and broke evey bone in my body. i also couldn't sleep for 2 weeks straight because of the pain. eventually i had to get a piccline because they stuck me with so many needles. i originally thought that i had cotton fever but when it didn't go away in a few hours i didn't know what was happening. i really loved being on the hospital because i was homeless at the time, but i. also couldn't wait to leave.

I know two people who had sepsis. My mom got it from a huge kidney stone and luckily got the sepsis treated in time she is alive. My brother hurt his hand and they stitched it incorrectly and he got an infection and was told to come back in 6 weeks after finishing the antibiotics. My brother did not and ended up in septic shock and was in the hospital for two months

Hi Rachel, wow what a great result, well done you look great now and nice to see your smile, I am Michael a sepsis survivor... 17th July 2018.. world cup final pain in my side.. yes it was my appendix.. I was working in Dubai, so by 5 pm in the A&E, next morning appendix removed but by then it had ruptured, not good but the surgeon said all was good, that evening I discharged myself as never before in hospital or sick so hospital not a place for me, few days rest at home, day five noticed something not right was not getting better, in fact was weak and had a growing pain in my stomach and lower back, that afternoon experienced a pain in my stomach region passing urine that almost was beyond belief, I nearly died for real with that pain, immediately back to the hospital a friend drove me, on admission my temp was 105.. fever and blood pressure was high, 3 hours later a scan revealed a collection in my abdomen in the apendics op region, then the shaking started I was going into septic shock, that night was rough as I was admitted and put on a drip, bloods taken for the lab, 6 am next morning the army of doctors arrived , confirmed I had a collection of poison in my abdomen that had to come out immediately, suspect that I had sepsis in my blood , so a fun day ahead, all during this time I was shivering, shaking and fever at 105 to 106, so at 10 am theater to remove the collection of poison by needle called aspiration, the surgeon decided to operate may kill me as sepsis already inside and in my blood and in septic shock, aspiration it was while I was awake as they needed to keep me awake throughout, mmm that experience was charachter building to say the least as I felt everything, when the surgeon broke through my abdomen and stuck the needle which was knitting needle size into the collection which was golf ball size they told me..... the smell from the bacteria or poison was like a dead animal... dead for a month, the nurse almost vomited, then the fun really started the surgeon had to press on my abdomen to force the poison out through the inserted needle, once this is done and has filled the glass jar .. he showed me how much he took out , i would say half a cup full of yellow, mustard color looking muck, he then gets the nurses to compress my abdomen for 15 mins to make sure all the liquid , blood and any other is out and all stopped, now I can tell you that was pain just before dying is the only way I can described it, bear in mind I am wake, not sedated or any local to soften the feeling .. pain in this case was the least of my worries, after this back to my ward whereby the doctor told me my creatine level was wrong so my kidneys were failing, in other words organ failure due to sepsis, so an interesting day ahead, in essence this is where I realized I may not make it, alone in Dubai, family 4000 miles away in UK, it was up to me to make it out of that hospital, so after 16 days in intensive care and 22 hours a day constant on antibiotics I walked out, 15 August 2018, I turned 56 on 22nd August 2019, wow what a feeling, I made it and am getting stronger , fitter and almost back to myself again but it has taken me one year to reach this point, what can I say I was lucky I guess like you Rachel, my understanding of sepsis is well I have become an expert on it and the recovery which is very important, positive thinking plays a very important part and I know some sufferers get knocked back badly but as a strong person I realise not everyone can cope, this is where they need help, the correct help so here is my evaluation of the recovery, you will get better ok .... 1st. keep moving once you are able, do not lie in bed, stand up and move, walk exercise anyway you can, get your limbs moving to increase blood flow and circulation as quick and as soon as you can even in hospital in recovery or other,... 2nd. drink 5 liters of water a day minimum plus apple juice or orange juice or watermelon as your taste, apple juice worked for me one liter daily, it cleanses the system and helps the toxins getting out of your body, 15 mins shower morning and night as you can see the skin issues and it cleans more toxins from your skin , I used dettol soap to cleanse my skin of the deadly toxins, walk in the fresh air as much as you can believe it or not the air helps but the walking is key, I was so weak I walked like an old man of 90 years in 100 degree heat around the hospital in Dubai but I still walked and every day I walked more and more and better each day, eat all you can no matter what, yes I know you will have very little appetite but you have to eat no matter what its very very important with the water 5 liters a day or what you can manage even 2 or 3 ltrs , do not lie in bed after discharge get up early, walk and stay mobile or sit up as much as you can, to stay immobile will not be good, take each day step by step, it will take at least 6 months to start feeling better even longer in some cases, in my situation I had to fend for myself , shop, cook and do everything to survive but I choose this as it helped me to keep on the move, my kidneys came back and I got fitter each day, now back at calisthenics training , it took some time but on my one year anniversary I am walking 7km a day and exercising for half hour every day , diet has changed all good and life is good I am glad to be alive and will never look back, the sepsis episode did not really change me more like it made me more aware of healthy living by a better diet and an appreciation for my strong charachter and what ever goes with that, I also have more empathy for those that get sick as I now appreciate how the affects can impact on a person, so Rachel we are sepsis survivors, we thank God for this and bless pray those of us that did make it may the rest in peace, I can only add that if in doubt about sepsis decide it is just that "sepsis" and treat it immediately, overkill is much better than waiting for the worst case, take care Rachel and I hope my own description helps others to recover and remember once you leave hospital your on way to full recovery already, God bless... Michael

This is not a rubbish story, I can relate to you in many ways :( I am currently fighting this, I got a small wound on top of my foot few days ago, left it untreated (no plaster..Just like you) and few days later it had grown and gotten infected...Like really infected, almost killed me. I spent 14 days in the hospital but I am now @ home recovering. I have to take 24000mg - 3000mg of dicloxacilin for a 3 weeks and hopefully that will kill this infection. I was so shocked to hear from my doctor that in my country of 320.000 people this kills 50 people every year...Thank you for sharing this experience, it means a lot to me :)

I am a sepsis surivor (2013). I didn't even know I had it til I read the medical records of my hospital stay, later. The doctors totally downplayed everything that was wrong, and attributed everything what had happened to a seizure (one that was absolutely, completely abnormal for me). There was no injury, I just collapsed one day, some time after being sick with a bad stomach bug (I don't even remember whether it was days, weeks, or months later). And I went into a freaking COMA, immediately, and my parents (told me later) had arranged for me to be transferred to a rehab hospital after I woke up, but I knew nothing about that. The doctors told me NOTHING, didn't discuss options with me or conversations they had had with my parents, they just sent me home, not even to my parents, hours away, still very ill, with a walker, because I still could not really walk. And like I said, it was not until I read through my documents later that I discovered that I even had sepsis and septic shock and a score of other problems I don't remember. Very incompetent doctors.

I developed sepsis last October 4 days after abdominal surgery. I was having trouble breathing and I felt like I was freezing....my breathing was so bad ,my husband practically carry me to the bathroom. We called 911, and when the EMT's took my BP was 90/40 and my pulse/ox was 79. They put me on Bi pap. When I arrived in the ER, there were 4 doctors and several nurses waiting for me...those nurses were really great. They started IV' s and took my blood very efficient. About 30 min later, I was diagnosed with sepsis. My heart was failing, my kidneys were shutting down, my blood sugar was 700 and had 900 ml of fluid in my chest cavity. I was admitted to the ICU until my conditioned stabilized, then was moved to a regular med/surg unit....I was discharged 15 days later and have felt fine ever since

I'm a survivor. I've been in the ER and Intensive care once with septic shock and three more times with sepsis. After the first bout of septic shock I had to go through 11 days of in patient rehab. I had a blocked urinary tract due to enlarged prostate. It was so bad I could barely squeeze out any urine. I had a constant urge to go and I couldn't. I had scheduled a meeting with a urologist but the night before the meeting with the urologist, I came down with chills and a 103 degree fever. I went to urgent care and they sent me to the ER. By the time I got to the ER I couldn't walk. I don't remember anything until I woke up in the ICU . My medical records clearly show I was in septic shock. My kidneys were failing. I identify with all of the stories here. I had to relearn to walk. My cognition was tested. I was catheterized. I never had breathing problems or heart problems. It has been a little over 2 years since I was in septic shock. I go to work every day. I just get tired after four hours when I work outside. I'm 71. I have no plans to retire or quit working. I've changed my diet and some personal hygiene habits . I'm drinking more water. I'm doing what I can to stay well . I discovered I have stage IV prostate cancer, but I'm living with it. I'm not scared. It is what it is. While death is a certain reality, my faith in Jesus Christ keeps things in perspective. It is appointed to man once to die and after death the judgment. I can't thwart that reality.

Interesting story. It is astonishing how fast sepsis comes on and shocking how it can rapidly lead to terrible or fatal consequences. I have had neutropaenic sepsis and bacterial sepsis twice - most recently just after the New Year and despite the covid problems an ambulance was with me within 40 minutes and was on intravenous antibiotics within an hour. Saved my life.

Suzanne Baker it’s actually very common for that to happen, if it’s caught extremely early it can be treated for oral antibiotics, or iv antibiotics at the hospital as a day patient then are able to go home. Its one of the most common things, you can literally get it from biting your nails and get an infection from it. Also UTIs if left untreated can cause sepsis.

Im a sepsis survivor since oct 2017. I survived from multi organ failure but had acute kidney failure and had to recieve hemo dialysis for 2 months and restored 50% kidney function and GFR and criaton levels started to normalize and i was able to have the cathader port in my chest removed... And was elated. Ill be a chronic kidney patient and have to see a nephrologist still...not sure if forever. I suffered endocarditis a couple of weeks after I was released from the hospital which is a heart infection. It was found that it was acquired through my catheter and my chest. But they caught it early and treated it with antibiotics but I am now left with scar tissue around my heart. While I was in the ICU with sepsis I was on a ventilator for 10 days they weren't sure if they would be able to ever take me off of it and I thought they were going to have to do a tracheotomy and put me on a feeding tube but luckily by the grace of God I was able to come off the respirator and breathe on my own I restored almost full Long Function now. I also aquired ICU related phuenomia as well. I have a huge fear of hospitals now too. My feet turned blue when i went into shock and thank god i didnt loose my feet but i know suffer nuropathy.

I know this video is old but im a survivor of sepsis and septic shock. I got really really sick in jan of this year(2023) and was diagnosed with strep and pneumonia at our local emergent care(similar to your a&e but not at the same time) i couldn't stay awake and was so cold but burning up at the same time. I now say I wished i didn't wake up enough for them to send me home(my nurse and dr said that they would have to keep me if I didnt wake up enough for me to go home) but i ended up going home. The next night shooting pain started in my left leg and it hurt to move it. Finally that pain went away(so i had thought) and pain in my left hand started and my left hand started to swell. I just thought maybe it was my body reacting to the weather because i have arthritis all throughout my body and it was the middle of winter. It wasnt untill my dog started sniffing and crying at me and where i was in a lot of pain and i couldnt stay awake that i knew something was really wrong. It took my pup running to the door when my hubby got home for two days that i said i need to go back to emergant care something is really wrong. I couldn't walk because i couldn't use my leg so my hubby had to carry me to the car and ran in when we got there(5 mins away from where we live) to grab a wheelchair. When the trioge nurse saw me she got me right into a room and they did more test on me and xrays and stuff and put an iv in my hand to give me fluids and start a strong med and some pain meds to try and stop my pain. I was their till like 8pm and they called the local hospital and had an ambulance come to transfer me. I remember crying in pain so much because they had my leg straight and strapped down and i needed it in a diffrent position. I was in the emergency foom till the next morning. They were going to put me in the bay area because the rooms were already all full but they pulled someone out and cleaned that room and put me in it. I looked like death and the person they pulled out of the room saw me and said she definitely needs the room shes sicker then i am. I had emergency surgery the next day on my left hand and hip. I had cellulitis in my hand and my hip had a raging infection in it so they scraped it all out. I was in hospital for a month and got out in feb of 2023. I had to learn to walk again and am still learning what i can and cant do with my hand as its still not able to move like it should. I went back to work a month and a half later and work was so good to me not letting me pick up anything heavy or put me in a postion that may have been to challenging for me because i was walking with a horrible limp still since i had just stopped using the walker to get around with. I remember the pca that was with me on intake saw me right before i left hospital and she was so so happy i was feeling better and healthy. She told me she took one look at me and felt so bad for my hubby and 3 kids because i looked likd death and she wasnt sure if i was going to make it and said she had put me on her prayer list and was praying for me every night(she was able to check how I was doing from the other nurses that had me. I was on the older people floor inatead of the icu because icu was full and i could get constat care on that floor. A week before i left they put a PICC line in my upper right arm so i could get the meds i needed faster and was sent home with all 3 meds that i needed for me for my husband to give me once a day and a home nurse that came in to change the dressings on it once a week and do my vitals. I remember some of what happened now better then i used to All i know is my pup saved me. If i hadnt gone in the day i did i would not be here typing this today. Im scared that if i get sick again i will have a second round of sepsis and im afraid if i do get it again i wont make it this time. Im only 41 and want to see my kids graduate(my oldest is a senior(12th grade) this year then I have an 8th grader and a 6th grader they need their momma.

I had the misfortune of going to hospital just as the fear of covid was really catching on. They were so convinced I had it that they tested me 4 times - all negative - and one negative antibody test. I had the classic symptoms of sepsis but no one was talking to me in these terms. I presented with pneumonia and lesions on my liver. I had a strep infection of my blood. Three days intubated and I nearly died the 2nd. 3 weeks in hospital and I'm still on at home IV antibiotics.

I have a stunning 5 year old little girl, and I'm so in love with her father it's crazy. I do love my ex hubby but IN LOVE,,,, NO ! And unfortunately it wasn't enough to stay with him without the children coming along. Things worked out for the best on both sides of the fence I think.

My father defeated first sepsis but could survive the second sepsis attack. He passed away on 29th may this year. He was a simple and jovial person. He would always tell me that he wanted to live a long life. He used to play with my 2 years old daughter and they would share candies and all. Now that he is gone my daughter misses her grandpa badly. Sometime I wake up in the middle of the night and cry, sometime I blame God for all the suffering he gave my father. I feel so low and helpless without him.

I am a Sepsis survivor as well (2014). I went into multiple organ failure and survived. I had lost the ability to walk very quickly and the ability to talk, soon after. Why aren't doctors more forthcoming with the after-effects of Sepsis? It is completely life altering! I thought I was going insane. My memory is completely shot. I can have a conversation with someone, and in a matter of hours, I will not remember the conversation at all. I live in a very small town (2100 people) and I get lost ALL THE TIME. I keep my tracker on my cell on at all times so I can call my husband and he can guide me home. Driving at night is even worse. It's like I have been picked up, and put back down in a strange foreign town, my surroundings are completely un-familiar. It's very scary! I can meet someone who clearly knows me and I will have absolutely no clue who this person is (I have become skilled in faking my way through conversations). I also have a head and neck movement disorder that looks like I am just doing a fast nod. I have headaches daily because of it, and I have to take motion sickness medication because of the constant movement daily. But I am here. I am alive, and I get to watch my daughter grow up (she was 6 when this happened). The after-effects were NEVER discussed with me. I spent hours doing research on the internet, and that is how I discovered the ugly truth about the after-effects. Why is this treated as a big secret?

Cari, hope you are doing ok, it's three months since your comment. I had sepsis organ failure as well and it appears many people get cognitive impairment that troubles them. You are correct in that the longer term effects are not well understood by the medical community, I was even treated in one of the U.S. leading university medical centers. An attending physician apologized for them not having a program to specifically address this. Best wishes for you and your family

I had sepsis and pneumonia last year in October, and ended up in ICU and after that spent a further 5 weeks in hospital, I had a line in my groin, I had picc lines, what I didn't know was that I had actually collapsed at home and was unresponsive, and if it hadn't been for my partner coming in when he did, I wouldn't be here right now, I start going to ICU this month for appointments, so let's see what happens when these appointments start and what they are about, I just wonder what kind of damage has happened, because I also had ecoli in my blood, and other things, so I know how you feel x

I am a Sepsis survivor too.... I collapsed November 7th 2014. unfortunately as a side effect of medications they gave me I had both of my lower legs and half of my fingers amputated. I find some days very hard to get through, other days I cope alright by distracting myself.I wish you the best in your recovery. ..

I had blood clot in mysentary artery - the one that keeps interstines up and running. Was in coma, had 10 surgeries in 13 days. In hospital a month, then two months in rehab. For a year I received all my nutrition via IV, hooked up for 16 hours a day. Nothing by mouth. Right. That went right out the window as soon as I got home. I remember being so weak that I was unable to walk by myself with walker., couldn't pick up a pencil to learn to write my name again. I think it was harder for other people than it was for me since I wasn't there for most of it, being comatose. The hardest part for me was that the two people who were supposed to help me get in the swing of being an invalid back at home got sick themselves and both had to go to hospital. It's a curse! I didn't have any life changing realizations but nor would I have expected to. I'm not a reflective person. It's live, work, die. If you're lucky you'll get some good meals along the way.

I was so surprised to hear you say you thought your face looked different or the shape of your nose had changed. I've never heard anyone talk about that before. But it happened to me. I had gotten sick and lost 12-14 pounds very quickly because I couldn't eat. My face had a sunken look to it from losing weight and muscle wasting but I remember thinking the same thing as you did about your nose. I knew it wasn't normal. And is it a coincidence that I now have osteoporosis at age 48? I don't think so. I never got diagnosed with sepsis, but Im pretty sure I had rheumatic fever from an unresolved strep infection. They're very similar. I'm glad you're doing better. I don't understand how they could send you home with oral antibiotics though. Why didn't they give you a picc line so the antibiotics could go directly into your blood stream? I'm also curious to know if the sepsis affected your menstrual cycle at all?

My mum gave a voluntary blood sample after going to GP and describing symptoms. The bloods came back the next day infected. It was then 2 days before the hospital diagnosed her with sepsis and started antibiotics IV. I then found that my GP knew from the bloods that it was sepsis. So I don't understand why the hospital did all these tests (Which she did need as there were other things wrong) before officially diagnosing her and starting the Antibiotics.

I had sepsis last November ,I gave birth to my daughter and the hospital I was in let me go home with the sac left in my womb and I was told it would away on its own and two days after being at home I started to feel really sick and I couldn't move I was bright red and my temp was 42 and I was breathing so fast at the start of my symptoms I just thought I had flu and then it gradually got worse and my eyes were rolling to the back of my head and the paramedic took 1 hour and 45 mins to get to me and then when I finally got to a and e I got forced to have diamorohine through the cannula even though I didn't want it this was at 10 pm and I was saying to my Mam that I couldn't read it she didn't know what I meant but I was trying to read the posters in the cubicle and couldn't read the rest so I was getting annoyed with myself if I tell anyone this who hasn't had sepsis think I'm crazy aha and then by 6am I was sent to maternity ward and I was told I had sepsis and they left me that long without antibiotics but anyways I had 5 days in hospital and was told it was because of the sac and I now experience ptsd and a doctor told me I was just at the stage before my organs all shutting down ,and hearing that I just thought there and then I was going to die and I have really bad anxietys and just think the slightest temp I get or if i feel sick at all that it is coming back and thank you for sharing your story as I don't have anyone to talk to about when I got sepsis xxx

I know what you mean. I had sepsis after a op I had in January and like you I think I have anxiously now. I can feel like I have a chest infection just cos some one talked about my sepsis. I was in hospital for 6 days so not as bad as 2 weeks. I hope you are well now.

My dad had septic shock, he had a cut on his foot, and got treated with antibiotics for about 2 months, it wasn’t working and his foot wasn’t healing. One day he ended up becoming increasingly unwell to the point where his speech was slurred, temperature was sky high and his hands and feet started to go blue, he was rushed to the hospital. Before it got that bad I had mentioned to my Mum and dad that he had better go up to the hospital because if he didn’t he was going to end up with sepsis. To which they called the doctor and the doctor said he had the flu. Sadly when my dad was rushed into hospital his leg had to be amputated and had to spend 2 months in intensive care as the sepsis had done significant damage to his organs. I feel as if this could of been avoided as any doctor should know if antibiotics aren’t working try another type of antibiotics and try it with an IV. but here we are a year on and he survived and is doing well. He has long term side effects from the septic shock but that’s to be expected! It was interesting hearing your story!

I developed sepsis after a similar fall as Rachel. Skinned my shin down the steps, seem ok but bad enough pain there in a few days that I went for Xrays (2 ERs!). No break! and no explanation why my shin felt so warm and had excruciating pain. I leaned against my mattress reaching for a book and YEOW!! Swollen leg, large purple color, horrific pain now worse still hot shin, My friend (ER nurse) says that leg HAS to be broken come to my hospital right now! They correctly diagnosed blood blister (cavernous hemangioma) on shin had busted (no bone break) but still they did not address the hot feeling on my shin (my friend wouldn't allow me to talk about it! Let them do their jobs! Hah!). Next morning leg was twice the size it should be and my foot was grey to above my ankle and I suddenly knew I was on my own. I took a large plastic spoon and gently scooped away from my foot and after 2 days the circulation was restored and foot turned pink again. Soon after was I rushed to hospital with almost 170 heart beat and they said thyroid issue! I was fighting sepsis and they weren't getting it and wouldn't even consider the infection aspect I was dealing with! (I was still guessing!) Given synthroid and advised to not drink coffee! SMH!

Finally diagnosed with staph infection a week later from huge blisters raised on leg near shin. Of course the cellulitis infection had traveled everywhere when the blood blister broke so I have what is called sepsis syndrome. Six weeks and 4 ERs to get diagnosed! My friend who I had been visiting at nursing home also had it from same time as me. She died while under Dr's care. I have learned many things. Control sugar/starch intake to keep blood glucose down. Learn about essential oils internally for initial staph infection. Get on it fast! and if you get the FEELING that you are slipping into sepsis take a dose of castor oil, coconut oil or olive oil. Oils counter the nitrogenous aspect of sepsis and it will slow enough for you to get help. My friend (a science researcher) told me this trick and I thought she was daffy but in desperation tried it (since I had castor oil for hair treatments) It WORKED! Had to stay close to bathroom though lol I have a list of signs it is flaring up. Vivid dreams, vivacious behavior, wake up gasping or huffing and I develop a peculiar body odor. Any of these not stopped will develop into the serious area I dread. Oil will stop/slow it. Usually one or two teaspoons a day.

I want to end with another aspect of staph, it is also in your sinuses! for 2 years when I was sick if I sneezed on myself I got what they call Scald. Brown wrinkly skin with fever from my bosom to the midline of my face (even the neck)! Once I bent over to sneeze and got it on my legs! I had heard that raw fermented kimchi juice would change sinus bacterial colonies for the better (less sinus infections) I wondered if my homemade sauerkraut might contain some good bacteria and that was the final thing to slow down 2 years of staph hell! Just dab the fermented juice at your nasal openings a few times over a week. Ta Da! You have to be proactive! I feel for us all take care...
