I think your pricing plan fits your purpose. Your goal is obviously not to get rich, but rather to share your craft skills with others and pay for more materials to continue your joy! I hope you really enjoy your market day!

Totally agree on your pricing....I live in Ohio in an area that does not support craft fairs and people don't want to pay for handmade items unless they are very cheap. I've even had people ask me to take less for an item that was already priced to low.😢

I'm a little worried about that too! John keeps telling me I should set up at the flea market and I'm like no way I don't want to deal with that. You ask $10 they say will you take $5. I would not have fun like that!!

You said exactly what I have been thinking watching other channels videos with how much they made at the markets results. They never take out the material costs to show the actual profit! I think your pricing methods is very sound. I’m the same, if I can get more money to buy more yarn then I’m happy. But for those that are making it their business they really have to do better calculations on actual cost. ❤

I love your plushies they so clean and pretty. Thank you for this video it really going to help me a lot. I live in Miami Florida. I had my furst market like 2 monthas ago. My daughter and her boyfriend helped me so much. It was in Fort Lauderdale. A lot of customers and i sold a lot. The only thing was that the booth fee was expensive it was $100.00 it was a lot for a 6 foot table space. Thanks God I took a lot of plushies abd people were so happy and complemented my work. With your video i will know how to price the plushies. Thank you so much for sharing

Sweet snuggles lite/chenille home slim from Michael’s is my favorite yarn ever. It’s a bit bigger than parfait chunky and I appreciate that, it’s so smooth and easy to work with. Only annoying thing is sewing pieces together it tends to strip the yarn. I absolutely recommend it if you like parfait chunky. I hate Bernat blanket 😂

Your explanation of cost of goods and gross vs net profit etc was very helpful thank you so much!!! I agree pricing is very tricky! I live in nyc and minimum wage $15 per hr and when I calculate my labor for crochet items AND cost of materials is can definitely feel over priced 😮but I’m not actually selling yet so I try not to stress 😂 I just try to remind myself that I’ll figure out prices and such if and when I do start selling!

  • @KnottingHookCrochet

Very true! Next year our min will be $13 and goes up a dollar a year until we reach $15. So if I did this on a regular basis I would have to adjust pricing also as supply prices go up you have to adjust. Plus after you have a few under your belt I think you can adjust your pricing to deal with supply and demand type issues. Sell out super quick you might be to cheap. Never sells you might be too high. At this point its a guessing game but I have to start somewhere.

Thank you for including cost of goods. I so agree. I use premier basix acrylic mainly because I believe it looks more detailed. Plush yarn doubles or triples your.cost of goods . I am all over the place with my pricing. And also I don't think one can expect to get 20 dollars an hour to crochet. Would anyone pay them 20 an hour to create inventory for their own plush business? Also one thing no one addresses is what about paying yourself to sit at the market for sometimes 8 hours?? That's a cost as well. Said all that to say.... NO ONE is actually getting paid what they're worth.. 😊 have a great time at your market.

  • @KnottingHookCrochet

    @KnottingHookCrochet

    9 ай бұрын

Totally agree that acrylic looks more detailed. My hands just can't handle too much of it. As far as paying yourself for the time at the market, I'm trying to look at that as a social outing 😂. I don't get out much working from home and all. Then after the fact I forgot to include things like bags, price tags, etc. There is a lot to this that I don't think some people think about.

what I do, I price items lower and more affordable for people at markets but I do charge more for custom orders or on Etsy because of the fees. I usually do markets in working class area and when people comes with couple of kids I want to make sure they can buy something for each kid. Always have some lower price small items, they will go for sure 🙂 Good luck and I can't wait to hear all about your inventory and your market.

Wow, you definitely crochet fast if you make that axolotl in an hour! I’m super slow then, lol! Back in the day, the pricing theory was take the cost of your materials, triple it and that was what you charge. Like you I’ve watched a ton of videos on pricing. I’m amazed at what some charge. $20hr for labor? What? You have to charge what makes you happy, period. Again, like you, I just want to make money to buy more yarn, this is not a business for me, it’s a hobby that can pay for itself (with a little extra hopefully). That said, I’m winging my prices. If they sell to fast, I’m not charging enough, if they don’t sell, I’m charging too much, I’ll have to lower the price. Thanks for your breakdown though, it was very interesting and more than fair. Now as far as yarn goes. Yes, the Parfait Chunky yarn is becoming a nightmare. I ordered 5 skeins from Herrschners, I got two. I ordered whit from Premier, it was awful, thin, couldn’t sew or do the magic circle with it so I wrote to Premier about it. They were obviously having an issue with it, they refunded me my money. I’m getting used to Bernat Blanket, definitely not my favorite to work with. Not as soft, a little hard to use, but I’m getting used to it. What I have fallen in love with is Michaels Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite and Chenille Home Slim. Both are super bulky six, soooo soft and very east to work with. Did you like the gray I used for my elephant in my last video. That was Sweet Snuggles Lite in color Silver. I highly recommended these (they seem exactly the same) if you haven’t tried them yet. You can order online and there are always sales going on! Ok, I blabbed enough. Have an awesome weekend. Of to make a kit I bought on Herrschners for $5. 🦋❤️

Thanks Sue! When you first mentioned you were having a problem with the white the one I was using at the time was fine. This one though is awful and I'm not sure if it was from Premier or Herrschners. Yes I did at least through the computer screen, like your gray. It seems though they don't always look the same in person. I think maybe I will make the trek to Springhill tomorrow, that is the closest Michaels to me and check out the Loops and Threads and Sweet Snuggles Lite at least that way I can feel it and maybe see some good colors. Thanks for your help and if we don't talk have a good trip!

Yes, i did the mini octo. The one that I weighed as i went vs one already made was 15 cent different. The already made one came out at the higher cost.

I think that the cost of the fee's are very high in US so should be added to the cost of the plushie x

May I ask why you don't factor insurance ($250/year), avg amount of gas ($50/tank), replacement parts ($10-40/hooks-needles), tent ($300+), booth rental ($25-$1500), and listing fees for online? I know customers will notice prices are different, but if I'm at a large convention or festival it can be in the thousands for rental/travel/hotels vs a local show at a school or church. I'm trying to figure out how to factor all of this in because otherwise my profit and even my self pay can completely disappear.

Because I'm not there yet. This will be my first show and it is local and most of the things you mentioned won't apply to me. I thing you need to figure out your average items sold per market and figure out what you need to add per item to cover those kind of expenses. I can tell you right off the bat I would not do a market that would cost me $1500 to set up. Regardless of how good of a market it might be.

The $1500 is an 8 week long event with an average of 160k attendance spread across the weekends. I'm just struggling to consider all the extra expenses and then averaging it across the items. I know enough about retail to know it should be added in but not enough to know how to do it properly. Your video was very informative, you mentioned experience in retail so I was hoping that perhaps you had a formula that made it easier. Thank you for taking the time and responding!@@KnottingHookCrochet

I feel like your skilled labor should get more than the state appointed minimum wage. You need to charge more for your time. The octo’s should be $10 at the least. Don’t undersell yourself. You have more time involved than just making them. You’re not counting the time buying your materials.

Be careful of hobby pricing affecting those wanting/needing to make a business out of this. The general public will then be less willing to pay higher prices for plushies from others. They don't understand all the work, practice, experience, research, learning, etc. that goes on behind the scenes. A big factor with pricing is how much people are willing to pay in your specific location. With China Cheapies affecting people's thoughts we need to be careful of continuing the trend. People need to start viewing hard work in making plushies or other handcrafts as deserving a lot more of their money than a Chinese Cheapy or a takeaway meal that lasts a few minutes.

Well, I don't think you could say this is hobby pricing. If so the $5 octo would be $1.

Where are you selling them, craft fairs? What about booth fees? Fuel to get to a show, shipping fees for the yarn? Do you have tables, tablecloths, price tags, display materials, signs? I think you are not even including all your expenses.

  • @KnottingHookCrochet

When you figure your materials cost you shipping fees are included. Most people would order enough to get free shipping anyways. As far as tables, tablecloths and display items you buy them one time and my opinion for what it's worth you would not charge that to one show it should be calculated as a yearly expense. My $35 booth fee and the little bit of gas it will take to go 10 miles is covered in my prices.
