Lived there for 10 months - my parents island. It is very fustrating when sorting out many things there. But it is my ancestral home and hence it pulls my heart-strings every time I return to the island.

Congrats on home ownership! Wow, what an inspiring journey! Moving to your dream location and embracing a solo adventure in your late 50s is truly admirable. I totally understand your frustration and can relate and empathise with the challenges that come with moving abroad. After 3 years building our house, myself and my husband relocated from the UK, to my place of birth, Dominica in 2019. It was no mean feat. We had many hurdles to overcome, one being the UK’s exit from the EU (Brexit), as a result, the value of the pound dropped to an all time low, which weakened the Eastern Caribbean dollar which caused a huge hole in our budget. Following on from that, hurricane Maria struck our beautiful island and devastated the infrastructure. This halted the building process as we could not get access to building materials, water and electricity. We had to work with what we had and this was a painful year long slog. Just as we thought things were improving, the Covid pandemic reared its ugly head. In spite of these obstacles we reached the finishing line. We are now enjoying the fruits of our labour and successfully running an Arbnb. Like you I was 56 at the start of the project, however I am a great believer in “nothing happens before its time”. Barbados is beautiful with an excellent nightlife and transport service. I was in Oistins at the start of the year and thoroughly enjoyed my time there and hope to return there again. If you ever visit Dominica, let’s hook up. Your videos are very inspiring, I hope by putting your experiences out there, it will help motivate others who are thinking of moving to greener pastures to do the same. Your house is beautiful in a stunning location. I wish you nothing but the best. Enjoy your journey and your new surroundings. Abundance of blessings to you. ❤

Thank you Fiyo 💕💖for taking the time to share your story which is so inspiring for me and I am sure many people who will read this. I certainly remember the weakening of the Eastern Caribbean dollar as it was one of the reasons why I delayed buying a house. But your experience in the hurricane and covid was definitely a test of your faith and resilience. Respect to and your family for persevering through the many obstacles and now living the life you truly deserve and worked hard for. ☀️🏝️♥️Blessings in abundance to you too, may you continue to enjoy success and happiness💖 I am definitely aiming to return to Dominica so thank you & let’s keep in touch 🙏🏿🐠☀️🏝️

@@expatbarbados-jaeophelia I just saw your videos, I am enjoying them. We plan to visit Barbados this week. To move from a big country to an island in the Caribbean is a huge change and you have to do a lot of adapting
Packing, shipping and unpacking is always going to be a difficult chore. I marked each box with name of room the items were for. Then piled up the boxes hostages until I was ready to unpack for a room. Boxes flattened in a corner, all shipped came to pick them up. I moved so much in U.K., I’m an expert, it helped when I shipped overseas. Obviously as a one female you will need locals to help with moving furniture into rooms, hanging pics a mirrors, and connecting and plumbing items. That said it’s always inspirational to see lone Sisters relocating overseas! And the joy of moving is when you’re done with this stage.

Hi Malieka, you are definitely an expert! It all makes perfect sense! I tried to be organised but it didn’t seem to work as the packers moved some items to make loading the container more space efficient. Some soft items were moved to help keep fragile items protected. My sister did it the way you described… each box labelled for a room. Thank you as your method will help others here in this community. The end is near! 😀💕☀️🏝️

We've been planning to visit extensively, and of course, have tuned into your journey for tips and suggestions. Although we understand pleasure and entertainment purposes on KZread and the like, you are a real person, and welfare and safety come first. That said, just know real people are watching too, concerned and care. Your bravery has been awesome that you've shared on this platform with your move from the UK. You will continue to be in our thoughts, and we are hoping the island and you will recover any losses. Do take care and keep us and the community abroad updated. I'm sure if you have sustained any losses, many people would love to help or donate in some form or another. Just ask, and the help will pour in. Remember, your community and onlookers want to see you continue to succeed. Stay blessed!!!

Oh Jae, I definitely empathize with your struggles on your move to your new home. I am still living in the U.S, where I came in the 1980’s soon after graduating high school to have a better opportunity to compete for better pay for work. My experience here is a very long story for another day. But I did purchase a home in New Jersey a few years back after renting most of my time after leaving the home my parents bought when we came here with my other siblings. When I bought the new home it was after my father passed on and my mother has had heath issues. So she decided to sell here home and use some of the money to add to the down payment on the mortgage of my new how which was way more expensive in a nicer area of NJ. So we had to move to the home of one of my brothers while the house sale was in the process of closing. We had to dump most of the furniture and anything that was absolutely necessary, because of the sheer volume of stuff accumulated over more than 30 years. We still ended up paying for 2 storage rooms. When we finally moved in, it was more work putting everything together than it was taking it apart. As careful as we were, we still had some broken furniture. But in my case, it was not as expensive to replace as it would be for you in Barbados, and I am able to do just about everything on my own, but I also could easily solicit the help of my brothers, who helped with the transporting and lifting of items to the areas I assigned. But yeah. It is difficult even if you are not moving to another country. So I could just imagine you having to deal with all this and can not handle most of it on your own and not having young reliable friends who could come to your aid. If I were there I would have volunteered to assist, but it is not time for me to move back yet. I still have a few more years working, unfortunately. Once you settle an can afford a little, fuel efficient car, you will once again be in bliss.

Hi Jae, is the airport in Barbados customer friendly with a regular gate instead of going up and down steps on the aircraft, and an option for wheel chair assistance? www.rome2rio.com/map/Tanzania/Barbados-Airport-BGI I used this website for their search engine and put in Tanzania. You could try Zambia, Uganda etc. Never used them before but seem legitimate. Always check everything first, don’t pay for any tickets etc until you have checked with your country what you will need to enter Barbados. …. Remember you can generally get a free tourist visa ( for vacation not work!!) but this is dependent on your passport and you will need a return ticket and an address where you are staying in Barbados as well as proof of money to spend whilst you are there. Hope this helps.
