My Rheem Powervent Water Heater Crash Course - Part 1 of 3 | Man About Home

From Comments: "...this video is likely the best troubleshooting guide ive seen in the intelivent"
This is part 1 of a 3 part series. Please watch all 3 parts to get the most out of it.
Part 2: • My Rheem Powervent Wat...
Part 3: • My Rheem Powervent Wat...
Our 11 year old Rheem Powervent water heater treated us to a lock out one morning. We have documentation from the previous owner that it cost $800. from Home Depot when it was new! So, I wanted to learn how to repair it, and possibly get a few more years out of it before it's time for a new one.
I'm no expert on these, so I had to spend some hours learning a ton about it. This ended up being my own personal "Crash Course" in Rheem water heaters. So, I thought I'd share some of what I learned with you.
By the way, I diagnosed the problem for sure on this. 100% certain... before I spent a penny on repairing it.
If you're having similar problems with your Rheem Powervent heater, this should help get you up to speed.

Comment added for future reference for people who have the problem of a broken FVIR inside the combustion chamber: Out of curiosity, I searched Ebay for "FVIR". There's a bunch of the FVIR devices listed, as well as some of the burner cover plate gaskets. I also found one on Amazon. Also check out my video about blowing the intake screen out. There's some conversation in the comments about this topic there. www.rheem.com/water-heating/articles/what-is-fvir/

Great video series; your attention to detail and troubleshooting skills are a rare find. I have the same code and am going thru it now to see what the culprit is.

I want to thank you for all of the work that you put into making this video series. It was invaluable for me. Despite the fact that I rent my water heater (common in my area), I really didn't want to get the service guys involved. Last time I had them come out, I was informed that this style of heater is no longer available and must be replaced with a physically larger unit with added insulation. The problem is that the previous home owners had renovated the basement and had installed a bathroom that trapped the water heater in a corner between the furnace and the new bathroom wall. There was enough space to get the old heater out but putting a new one in would require removing the furnace, installing the new water heater and then re-installing the furnace. They were able to find an old heater that would fit but I was warned that was the last one. A couple of months ago, my heater started acting up and periodically required pulling the plug and resetting it. This finally got to the point where this would no longer work. Using your suggestions, I was able to confirm that the shut-off valve was working as it should. Ultimately, I ended up removing that burner / flame sensor assembly. The sensor looked OK, but I sanded it anyway and cleaned the burner. Like magic, it has been working flawlessly for the last week. My daughter who is home from college for the summer is very very happy to no longer have the surprise of freezing showers.

My heater just experienced this same error code. Tried cleaning the flame sensor, but that didn't fix the issue. Eventually figured out the gas valve solenoid was the problem. Was quoted $600 to replace the gas valve assembly, but decided not to go that route given my heater was 15 years old. Ended up replacing it. Hope I get 15 years out of the new one! One thing I did do -which may have helped extend the tank from rusting and leaking - was I changed the anode rod every 5 years.

I took a chance by replacing the gas valve. (~$300) The tank is still good, so far. I've been thinking I should replace the anode. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching. Good luck with the new water heater!

Yesterday I had the same issue and your video helped me fix this! I cleaned the flame sensor (using an emery cloth) and waited about 30min to check if we have hot water. Lo and behold, we have hot water. thank you so much, I highly appreciate you!

The 6 LEDs indicate the water temperature setting. According to the Manual, from left to right - the 1st LED (vacation) Warm = approximately 70 Degrees F. The 2nd LED doesn't appear to be used. The 3rd LED (down arrow) = approx. 120 Deg F. The 4th LED (A) = approx. 130 Deg F. The 5th LED (B) = approx. 140 Deg F. The 6th LED (C) = approx. 150 Deg F. Or, the 6th LED FLASHING (C) = approx. 160 Deg F. Thank you for watching!
