My review of Sharpe (1993 - 2006)

Ойын-сауық

At the request of one of my subscribers, I've put together my thoughts on Sharpe (ITV 1993 - 2006) starring Sean Bean, Daragh O'Malley, John Tams, Jason Salkey and David Troughton. All views my own, all clips belong to ITV and are used solely for the purpose of review and critique.

Fun fact: the books Hornblower was adapted from inspired Bernard Cornwell to write a land equivalent, clearly Sharpe didn't turn out to be quite as polite as Hornblower and the number of books in the series ended up being more than twice Hornblower's number but there it is, without Horatio we wouldn't have Richard

@@briancatoni7000 I do love the contrast between the two characters: Hornblower is the typical clipped Englishman whereas Sharpe is a scruffy commoner who fought his way up the ranks to command the respect of The Duke of Wellington. Ultimately they are both on the same side. It would be next to impossible to make something like Sharpe/Hornblower today with Brexit happening. Fifty years ago you could only get funding for a film if the incongruous American character saved the day; nowadays it would have to be the woman masquerading as a man, with 'their' rag-tag army of gays, ethnics and Mary Sues, undertaking the actions that led to victory at Waterloo or Trafalgar.

Hmm, can I make another request for a review? Metro, 2033. okay, fair warning, it isn't a movie but a video game based on a book by Dmitry Glukhovsky - basic points of the plot - set in post apocalyptic Moscow. 20 years have passed since the world died in atomic fire and the survivors are forced to live underground in the metro subway tunnels (Hence the title) where they fight not only the horrid mutants but also each other. all the stations on the line have become their own dwarf-states and often make war on each other. The book is a VERY good read and I'd highly recommend it. The games are also very good as well. I have the first 2 and can't wait for the 3rd one to drop later next year - I even did a reaction video to the E3 trailer where I did a little skit (Insert shameless plug here kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2iFpbGxj6bFpso.html ) Anyway The Critical Drinker I'll leave you to it. If you do end up reading the book and/or playing the games and making a review of it I'd be very interested in seeing your thoughts on it. (Though something tells me that this is probably not going to happen i can at least say that i have recommended a great book for you to read) Cheers mate.

Well, I've heard nothing but good things about the Metro series, both the books and the games, so it's something I wouldn't be against reviewing. My problem is that I haven't read or played any of them, so I'd need time to absorb it all. Right now I'm working on a retrospective series for the Resident Evil games, which is something I've always wanted to do. I might also throw up some reviews for the rest of the Outlander books just so I can put that one to bed once and for all.

When I saw Sharpe's Waterloo, I didn't miss that moment when it recycled the climatic volley fire from the South Essex at Napoleon's Imperial Guard to the volley fire taking place at Talavera in Sharpe's Eagle. But when I first saw that and immediately knew it, it kind of made some form of sense to portray it that way, it's basically taken a scene from one of Sharpe's major and bloodiest battle from Sharpe's Eagle and reshaping it towards his Waterloo. You could easily describe it as his own memories or comparisons from what he had witnessed, from being a Captain watching the volley fire, to being Lieutenant Colonel actually giving the order to fire. It really is a great comparison from both same battle sequences going on in his own mind's eye that we can kind of look in a different but understandable way. Nevertheless, I absolutely loved that I grew up watching this particular Sean Bean and being fascinated with the epic tone and stylised scenario it went for with him, everybody else went on about how he dies in everything and I personally missed out in many of those moments, aside from Goldeneye and Game of Thrones, but this Sean Bean has been the exact one I remember never taking death for granted, never the type to die when death looks upon him and always getting back up for round 2 to round 10. This is one of the best series I ever thought brilliantly depicted. From his constant swearing, to moments I was blocked from seeing though granted I later got to see clearly, to the adventurous journeys, to constant fighting and dialogue. To this day, I absolutely love this series!

Sharpe (and his naval counterpart Hornblower) were some of the best TV ever made. It would never be made today because of it's male-dominated cast and unashamed British Empire setting. The fact that all the other European nations were empires as well would be largely ignored, and it would be perceived as pro-Brexit propaganda

It is mainly british propaganda though. I liked the series, but the more I learn and read about the napoleonic wars, the more I realise how biased and inaccurate it is. From the impossible tap loading a rifle, the depiction of the dutch at waterloo, the (lack) of tactics the french use, the demonising of french officers. It's nearly all fantasy. The worst thing is that there are way too many people taking this kind of show at face value and believe that this is the way things really happened.

  • @Retrosicotte

@@slome815 In fairness, the book is rather more accurate regarding the Dutch at Waterloo. It's just the show had only a limited budget and could only include the "main things" of each of them. The main thing for the Dutch unfortunately being the Prince of Orange, who was hardly a proud moment for them. Also, I don't know what you mean about the demonisation of the French. They're generally portrayed as pretty much the same as the British ones. Some are good and honourable. Some are pompous and vindictive. Very few people treat this show as "face value".

@@slome815 it’s not “British propaganda” portraying the British as heroic and the good guys (considering it’s told from the British perspective) doesn’t make it propaganda. The french officers aren’t demonised for example jean-Baptiste Calvet and his sidekick/friend Gaston, are portrayed as good guys who help sharpe And Michel dubreton is also portrayed as a good guy who helps capture hakeswell and tries to save sharpes wife, he and sharpe are also portrayed as having a mutual respect for each other. And it’s not like many of the British are portrayed as any better like Simmersons, or hakeswell, seargeant rod, Berry, lord rosendale, colonel brand and many more because sharpe has enemies on all sides in the peninsular war not just the french. Even the good British officers are often either stuck up, incompetent or stupid and it’s usually sharpe who leads the army and wins the battle, and again the British aren’t portrayed as the best when it comes to tactics, like when the an entire battalion of 95th riflemen (apart from sharpe and his men) are massacred by french cavalry because they didn’t have any scouts keeping watch, or when rosendale and his company of dragoon’s are butchered by french infantry and cuirassiers because of rosendales incompetence and more, charging like in the show was a very popular french tactic especially when on a smoky and foggy battlefield because an inexperienced or smaller force would either have they’re morale destroyed or be completely overrun, it wasn’t used always but it was used a fair bit. And what do you mean “look how it portrays the Dutch” it doesn’t portray the Dutch badly it only portrays the prince of orange himself badly, whereas the princes Dutch second in command is shown as sensible and competent aswell as a mutual ally of sharpe, and there’s a scene where the Dutch bravely and successfully hold of an entire french column. The Dutch aren’t being portrayed as cowardly when they run and the prince shouts “come back here you cowards!” As Wellington himself literally praises them for being sensible and says “I don’t mind men running, as long as they come back”.

I like Sharps Rifles, but there was a big mistake in the episode of Sharp's Waterloo. In the manor of La Saint Haye you saw soldiers of the 95th Rifles who were never there. They were in fact soldiers of the 2nd Light Battalion 'King's German Legion'. Most of them come from the area in Northern Germany where I live, which is why I recognized that. The green uniforms were very similar, but not identical. Actually, Sharp played exactly the story of Major Georg Baring, who died on February 27, 1848 in Wiesbaden as lieutenant general of the Hanoverian army.

Loved Sharpe. Was into all things Napoleon as a lad. Like Sean Bean in everything of his i've seen. This is not a criticism rather a compliment: i got a sense watching Sharpe that they were doing a lot within a limited budget and they did well. Sean Bean also hosted a brilliant documentary on the battle of Waterloo a few years back. Well worth a look if your a Napoleon nerd like me.Cheers.

I read the Sharpe series of books in the 90's. I was in the US Infantry for 20 years, always had a book with me in my pack. Bernard Cornwell did an excellent job writing about being wet, cold, hungry, and still have a job to do and take care of your fellow Soldiers.

I stumbled across Horatio Hornblower and really enjoyed it. It was so completely random how I came across H.H. that when I had finished the series I went searching to see if there had ever been anything similar produced. That search led me to Sharpe which I also really enjoyed. I like Horatio Hornblower a bit more, but both are definitely a must watch from a time where talent was actually still a thing. I had no idea Sharpe ran until 2006, that means I had finished watching it right around the time of the last episode, while thinking the whole thing was a bit older. If I had started watching it say, a year sooner, I would of caught up to it which would of really surprised me.

Great quick review. I loved this show growing up, early 90s tele at its best. Saw them all as broadcast (i have the dvd boxset as well) then read the books in the 00s. This is reason I get sad when Sean is cast as the baddie or dies 😔. Plus this shaped me so much I nearly joined the RGJ (the regiment the 95th became before becoming The Rifles) before I discovered girls and booze 🤣 and to this day I still use "the chosen men" as my username in games 🤪

I'm listening to the books on Audible. I was reticent to start, and the beginning of the first novel was a struggle to engage in, but once on the way, its good drama. Just finished Book 10 a few weeks ago. I'm keen to look into the series, and I probably will pick up the DVD set to watch after I have finished all the books. The yelling was Wellington, played by David Troughton. I've found out that he's not in the series much, but I remember that scene from the book, it's brilliant and the TV scene does it justice!

Great series, although you can clearly see the very limited production value in the early episodes (they'd have a battalion played by a about 20 rank and file and 6 officers), they got better at disguising this overtime and clearly the budget also increased. It's a little funny to see these older videos from the Drinker when his persona was more subdued, and he didn't name posts like this The Drinker Recommends.

Cornwell, a player of Napoleonics, was meticulous in his re-creation of the period and the characters who inhabited it. From his visiting the battlefields in real life to the dedicated writing of his novels, his authorship has breathed life into a period already gone to dust. Yes, I loved the Sharpe series and subsequently all the other books written by Cornwell since. I first became addicted to this genre through the writing of C. S. Forester [the Hornblower books]. This was followed by the equally good naval Richard Bolitho books written by Alexander Kent [a pseudonym used by author Douglas Reeman]. If you want rollicking good reading then you could do a lot worse than starting with these three authors.
