Hello from the US. My relaxer experience started I think I was twelve. The process of having that paste on my scalp did not feel right the first time and every time thereafter. After what seemed like forever, when I got out of the chair my hair looked beautiful, but I always thought it looked beautiful. I thought to myself now I just need to buy a brush and I can brush it like I had seen so many of the Caucasian girls in my school brushed theirs. I thought wow this is great. However, over the years of having to go back every 6 to 8 weeks damaged my hair to the point it had to be cut just pass ear length and my hair was long prior to relaxers. And the scabs after the burns, my Lord. One day I was standing in front of the mirror and saw new wavy growth and felt it. It felt strong and looked healthy. I cut the relaxed portion gradually in 2005 and have not looked back. Will I ever get a perm again? Absolutely not. It's not for me. My natural hair is doing well. Thank you for sharing your story.

LMAOOO @ “hey John, do you think my hair would look better str-“ and the face. The way this is relatable 😭 Being in predominantly white spaces/schools can be so daunting on self image as a black person fr.

Honestly, it was basically HELL lmao. Self-image on the ground. I am so glad that I've grown up and can now see through it all 😂😭❤️

The sense of betrayal when I found out the little girls on the relaxer boxes didn't even have relaxers 😩🤣 Their hair was silk pressed.

Thank you for sharing. I relaxed from about age 12 - 45 😔. I'm 48 now & also enjoying my 3 years/5month mark. I've FINALLY created MY routine & my natural Tresses are Thriving 😍. I'm obsessed with my Real, HEALTHY, THICK, Growing & Glowing Beautiful Melanated hair = HalleluYah! I cut that stringy mess off & haven't looked back. I recently experienced some heat damage & I trimmed it away too 😊. I'm at a healthy medium length now & no heat for at least 1yr is the plan. I'm hoping to gain more length in this year. I'm excited to see where I am this time next year...... 💕

My relaxer experience was actually pretty magical in the beginning. The hairdresser I went to the first time was so nice and gentle, and explained everything to me in a very simple way. My hair had always been thin and fragile even when it was natural so I didn't expect long hair and I didn't particularly mind. The idea of long hair kind of freaked me out. I liked uniforms and ease. I wasn't really a girly girl. But then... I started swimming. And I was not prepared for what chlorine would do to my hair, or my skin for that matter. 🥲 Washing my hair and seeing those clumps made me appreciate my hair sooo much more. Learning to take care of my natural hair became such a calming practice for me. It really opened the door to everything soft and glittery and feminine I hadn't considered before. It made me feel A LOT more connected to myself.

Hey girl. Your not the only one that thought the hair would be straight after relaxer. I honestly thought this too. It’s funny because I think of this as when I told my hair dresser I wanted to become natural she started telling me about instead I should do a “texturizer” and at the time it sounded so good but I swear I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.

I love my natural and relaxed hair. My natural hair is so thick and makes me tired, so I relax. Then I get tired of the whole process of relaxing, and I don't trust anyone to relax my hair, so I go back natural 😂

Can you make a video on how you were able to grow it out this long? Something tells me the only way for it to grow out this long is to NEVER TRIM/CUT the hair. I’ve cut my hair plenty of times and realized that if I didn’t my hair would already been down my back.

Greetings from The States. I have had two experiences with relaxers, and neither of them ended well. When I was two years old, my mom relaxed my hair because she wanted it to be more manageable. Unfortunately, she found out that my hair and relaxer were like oil and water. So she stopped using relaxers. And then when I was eleven, my cousin relaxed my hair, unaware of the fact that my hair and relaxers don’t mix. Needless to say, my hair became shorter. After that, I never got a relaxer again. I’ve been natural ever since, and I’m going to keep it like that. I have to admit, I was shocked to learn that most of the girls on the perm and relaxer boxes had natural hair this whole time.

My hair thrives relaxed. My natural hair is very thick, but hard to style. I truly don't know how to take care of it. 😢
