I can kinda see Steve, he didn't have enough time to show what he could do. I think he would have been in a category with SRV. I wish I knew what these guys did to piss off the idiots who nake up these lists. This is arguably greatist guitar solo of all time, masterfully woven in, Gary & Steve(Ed as well) do how can you have that honor and not be one of the best of all time. I graduated high school in 1974. It is so fulfilling to see so many young people finding this music for the first time. The Sixties and Seventies Bands were true musicians, they fed off each other during their live performances! Thousands came together to live the experience. The bands reacted to the vibe like no other time! Thank you for your reaction to “Old Fashioned Rock” as it was during “the day”...

That song is pretty good audio equivalent of feeling drunk and high at the same time. This was the song of nearly every rural high school party of the late 70s and beyond. Now, it's a musical time machine. Even now, when I listen to it, I have to a beer in hand and several already empty beer cans nearby. Positive or negative, your reactions are honest and delightful. That's why I'm here.

If you watch the live version from Oakland 1977 you will see how the bird chirps are done. I got to see them just before the crash. My heart hurts so bad seeing these videos but they take me back to much better days. They were Southern Rock Gods. There will never be another like them.

Isn’t it amazing that that many people could be in the crowd having a good time listening to music more than likely smoking a joint or two no cell phones.

That "noise" was the guy with the cigarette hitting the strings with the slide to make a bird sound effect. HA HA

After almost half a century, this, in my opinion, is one of the best songs ever. Performed by my all-time favorite band. Thank you thank you thank you for reacting to them. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one deep rabbit hole to go down, so much amazing music. Tuesday’s Gone, Ballad of Curtis Lowe and Simple Man are some excellent ones that I can listen to again and again. BTW, the bird is one of the guitarist 😉 Stay safe and keep them coming 👍 I completely understand this isn’t some people’s cup of tea, but I’m not going to hate on ya for that. You gave your honest opinion and I have huge respect for that. If everyone liked the exact same thing, what a boring world it would be. Totally southern rock. Growing up in the south, Lynyrd Skynrd was a staple. Classic song in the US. The studio version is more calm, but I love the live too. Love your reactions! Hope someone fills you in on their history and the heart breaking plane crash. RIP LS

I have heard this so many time since the 80s, the solo just gives me the chills every time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the most beloved southern rock bands of the 1970's if not the most. Even after their deadly plane crash on Oct 20th,1977 until now their music is loved and cherished by multiple generations.

'The' Southern Rock anthem performed by Southern Rock royalty. Note: Long jams at live concerts were a common Southern Rock thing, but this one was written long. (It's pronounced "Linnerd Skinnered".)

In 1979 I was living in Nashville. Charlie Daniels had his Volunteer Jams at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium and a group of us to include some of my buddies from Jacksonville, Fla were listening that night to the live broadcast. There was no script to the Jam just whoever showed up played. Well we got knocked on our rear ends when the survivors of Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage unannounced. When they started Free Bird with no singing we all ran out of the house to our vehicles and turned the radios wide open. Then we sat there in silence while they played. No words can describe the feeling we had that night of hearing Free Bird for the first time without Ronnie Van Zant singing.

I believe that was Allen Collins playing the solo, "one" of the greatest rock guitar riffs of all time. Tremendous skill to play that.

Sweetie, you just witnessed the greatest Southern rock band's to ever come from the South. Its also' the greatest Southern rock anthems of all generation. And sweetie, the sound you heard, that sounded like a bird chirping was Gary Rossingtons slide on the strings of his guitar. Yes' he truly makes that sound on his guitar, and it's about being free, like a bird, flying. You have also witnessed what real music is, that comes from the soul. Not this shit they have out now, and of course' you do have your opinion about it, but' here where I live in North Carolina, which is parts of the South, we take our Southern hospitality and heritage serious. Btw' I absolutely love your accent, and you should try listening to the (Allmans Brother) southbound and soulshine. Sweetie, I promise you that you will be amazed by them. They also are from the South as well. Stay safe!!!

Those "bird sounds" are Gary Rossington running his slide way up past the frets onto the pickups. I saw this band a bunch along the way, and nobody could whip a crowd into a frenzy quite like the original lineup of this band. "Ballad of Curtis Lowe" "Gimme Three Steps" "Simple Man" "Call Me The Breeze" "Tuesday's Gone" "Thing's Going On" "Gimme Back My Bullets" are all strong. Always 3 guitars, and always BLAZING! RIP Ronnie, Steve, Allen, Billy, Cassie, Bob....

Skynyrd isn't for everyone, that's cool. As someone else said, I think you'd appreciate their studio cuts more. Personally the guitar solo is my favorite part of the song, especially live. The '77 show in Oakland by far surpasses this.

I was at the 77 show . I was in Thea army at Fort Ord and went to the day on the Green concert in Oakland . It was the best concert of my life. And there were so many headliners that day.

Back then (I was 27), someone would ask “what did you think of the guitar solo?” and I would say “I can’t say, I only heard the 1st two hours of it”!

Wow! You did a Lynyrd Skynyrd song! This is what is known as "Southern Rock" from the Southland of USA. This song is actually a Rock Anthem in the South and throughout USA. Several members of this band were killed when their plane crashed into a Mississippi swamp. Lead singer Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gains (Guitar Player) his sister Cassie Gaines and pilots killed. Everyone else severely injured. In this video they were opening for the Rolling Stones. Notice the long black stage which is the tongue on the stones logo. Rule was they were not allowed to go out on the black part of the stage. They did it anyway and it really made Mick Jagger angry. Ronnie VanZant didnt care. It is said that Skynyrd stole the show and the Stones were not happy about that at all. This is the concert that put Skynyrd on the map. This is probably not the best song for you to react to. I can understand this not being your thing. Ronnie VanZant is like a God here in the South. He was a musical genius, wrote all of the songs and NEVER wrote the lyrics of the songs down. He said if a song was worth writing you didnt need to write the words down. As a young boy he would tell his father that he would die before he was 30...he died when he was 29. They have a lot of other songs you would probably like but if not thats cool too. Good Job Gitana!

It was s different age in music when I was in high school and they had a tragic plane crash shortly after this concert that killed the lead singer and others, just FYI , they left an inspiration on the Rock world and the surviving brother and others members still playing to today and they are guilt good, thanks for the video this meant a lot to a lot of people , God bless

I seen them around a year or two after lead singer Ronny Vanzant was killed inn a plane crash with other members but at the end of the concert they brought out Ronnie hat and put it on the mic stand the bands started playing and the croud singing the words while the band just played there wasn't a dry eye in the arena maybe to a lot of people best song ever written. 10 years. 1987 Volunteer Jam. Johnny sang everything but Free Bird. Gary later told him that it had words and he needed to sing it.

I can't hear this song anymore without remembering the final scene from the move The Devil's Rejects. The combination of this song and that scene is the perfect combination to me

Gary Rossington makes that sound by touching his slide down by the pickups. And those people were saving their strength because they knew what was coming.

Your honesty is appreciated. This is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but you gave it a shot. I grew up on this stuff... my dad was big into classic rock, and Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the bands that really stuck with me from a very early age. I like other music from this era as well, along with some modern rock thrown in.

Have you ever heard Lynyrd Skynyrd Ballad of Curtis Loew. My favorite from them!

This is the absolute BEST version of this song. Crushes the Oakland show.

I disagree. I think Oakland had a better vibe and sound all the way around. I love the "Fuck you Mick" moment, but other than that I think the Oakland performance was better.

Must add skynyrd is a icon in music history you need to read about the history of this band

There is a reason almost 60 years after the song was released, you still hear people at concerts yell "play freebird" regardless of the band on stage..... simply the best rock song designed to be played live, ever written.

CLASSIC SOUTHERN ROCK.. It isn't for everyone. For me though, it's what i grew up on being from the southern US. The talent in this band at the time this concert took place is nothing less than phenomenal. The solo that went on forever was and still is a masterpiece that will never be duplicated. This band still tours today in some form some 56 years after forming and 43 years after the fateful plane crash in south Mississippi that claimed the lives of 6 people: pilot Walter McCreary, co-pilot William Gray, assistant road crew member Dean Kilpatrick, lead singer/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines (brother/sister). This song is a classic but again, it isn't for everyone. But I would ask that you not write off Skynyrd after 1 tune. It's an acquired taste for some so dive deeper into their catalog of music. The more you do, the more you'll come to enjoy it. Well done.

One of the greatest bands to bless the face of the earth. Such a tragic story for such a beautiful thing. This was my dads favorite band. He was killed when I was very young. His middle name was Lyn. I gave my first born son his first name and the middle name Lynyrd.

'Simple Man' is my favorite of theirs.

I grew up with this stuff in the 70's...Skynyrd was one of my favorites (nothing against the post-crash lineup but I always preferred this band with Ronnie as the lyricist & lead singer, along with Steve & Cassie Gaines. Their music was very influential, and Classic Rock stations in the U.S. still play it regularly. They were still ascending as a band when the crash occurred, within just a short time after releasing their album Street Survivor. It's perfectly fine that it wasn't your thing...I agree that the live version of this can go on & on, that's just what bands did back then because that's what fans were demanding of live shows. Give some of their other music a go...they have a respectable catalog of good music!

It was because we got to listen to music like this that we were all so happy back then. The 90s changed all that and everyone got depressed...

This is the music I grew up with I was 16 when this concert was done and I absolutely love Lynyrd Skynyrd and so many other bands from the 70s 80s n 90s but I also love country music pop rap and so much more it's refreshing to hear someone give a truly honest opinion I think a lot of times the reactors on here play more to the audience and what they want to see and hear even if they really didn't like the song so it's refreshing knowing we're getting your honest opinion on what you just listen to and that's your opinion you're entitled to it just like everyone else!!! Hey, just found your channel, from what I've seen you got a good genuine thing going on here and I dig it. For context I'm from North Carolina, and was raised on Skynyrd. They were my first concert when they played at the end of the Kyle Petty (Nascar driver) charity ride. Also for context im 30, I feel that is important as rock spans such a vast time span. With that said, this version was more for people like me that grew up on the songs. A not live version would give more focus on the lyrics and the meaning behind them, but this was pure, pre plane crash, Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) Lynyrd Skynyrd. They named the band after their gym teacher...it causes some amount of confusion. But with this particular performance being so unique, I do not fault your criticism one bit. I would suggest, and I'm literally finding you today so apologies if it has been done, Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Specifically them, not the Shinedown cover. Anyways if you see this have a nice day.

Skynrd is and always will be iconic,as a southerner you cannot go to bar hear without this song being played at least once a night.Its kinda haunting that it showed a plane in their video knowing that so many of the band members died in a plane crash not long after.

The crash happened a year later. They did the Oakland stadium just before that. That version is on KZread and is unreal.

The sound you keep hearing is done on the guitar by Garry Rossington...it represent a chirping bird.

Gitana you are a joy to listen to .... and watch. One of the best southern rock bands and songs ever. To this day go to any music venue in the states - especially where alcohol is available lol and near the end of the night someone will be requesting this song. Every rock, country or blues band has gotten that request. Also yes, the bird sound is from the guy playing the slide guitar. Dive deeper into southern rock. You won't be disappointed. Saw them LIVE, dozens of times before this was filmed in 1976. Maybe your "Hippies" were different from our Hippies. But here in the South, they were HOT & everyone loved them!

They were one of the opening acts there in England for the Rolling Stones and were told not to go out on the tongue at the bottom but being from the south...they did not listen...😁😂😁😂😉

I know I'm late to this reaction, today is January 31, 2022 - I just had to say this video was awesome!!! I love Skynyrd, always have, and always will. I still get upset and miss the band members that died in the plane crash over 40 years ago. I remember 1976 like it was yesterday, I was on my way to Phoenix Arizona to see a concert, Santana and Eric Clapton, I've loved rock n roll all my life and I will never understand why some people have to leave this planet sooner than they should have, Gitiana... Steve Gaines and Allan Collins are 2 of the most underrated guitarist ever.

"What is that weird sound, like a bird?!" I laughed at that. The song is FREEBIRD, lady! And it's Gary Rossington "chirping" the guitar with his slide. BTW, I so love the combo of Rossington, Collins, and Gaines. They were so complimentary. Gary was strongest at slow/mid-tempo "feeling" solos and a very underrated slide guitarist. Not flashy but clean and great tone and feeling. Collins was all flash and fire - how he played a solo like this so fast and for so long - his forearms must have been on fire! If you watch teaching channels, the riffs and runs on the solo are actually extremely difficult and technical, especially at speed. Finally, Steve Gaines was just coming into his own as a guitarist at the time of the plane crash was was really good as well - note how well he matches Allen at the end of the solo. When you think that they also had Ed King at the beginning of the band's time together, it's really crazy that so much guitar prowess was concentrated in one band. And Leon Wilkerson was no slouch on base either.

Thank you for sharing this. I was actually in that crowd back in '76 and you reminded me of this astounding performance on a very long hot summer evening. It made me do what I did then and play my air guitar at volume 11. Now I need to work on the hair, comb anyone?

Thank you for reacting to their concert at Knebworth Festival... My personal favorite live version of Free Bird. It's hilarious how the crowd comes to life when Alan Collins starts shredding on guitar.

One of the most iconic songs ever written. I've seen them 4 or 5 times unfortunately not with the original members.

“Playing for Duane Allman”. Guitarist Duane Allman was the master guitarist for the Allman Bros. Band with brother Gregg Allman. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. Must check out “Whipping Post”...for some more great Southern Rock!

PS: Complete respect for ANYONE who admits that it isn't for them, but STILL recognizes the talent and skills required in regard to presentation, vocals, and structure. So many people will simply go "not for me" and then proceed to dismiss the entire experience. But like I said, complete respect, for being able to complement the band overall and STILL say "hey, it just isn't my thing". Bravo, bravo, bravo!

You should just react to their entire Knebworth performance .The were at their best

Not everyone likes the same music. Period. Personally, I love Southern Rock, but this particular video of this song can be an extreme overload for someone not familiar with the genere. Kinda like what the french composer Saliere said of Mozart, "There are just too many notes for the brain to comprehend at once".

You have to remember when that music came out and who else they were competing against. I was a young teenager when they started and being from the southern U.S. it was a time of finding a band that you could relate to.

I went to the Willie Nelson picnic in Tulsa Oklahoma when I was 13 and I am 60 now and there was 6 bands that played that day all day it was the best concert I ever went to.

If youre into Rock .... Cant imagine life without it. Hard rock,soft rock, Metal rock, classic rock mellow rock, psycodelic rock acid rock proggresive Rock, Metal Thrash, Doom , Power Metal. I love Rock n roll

OK. Yes. You didn't care for it. I'm guessing the studio recorded version may be a little more liked, at least up until the looong outro. Plus, like you said, this is an old video without the benefit of current sound quality. Que Sara Sara as they say. Keep on truckin'.

This band is called the three guitar army. All the guitarists were excellent, and only one is still alive. This band is and was truly awsome, and the true definition of southern rock. Nobody did or does it better.

No it's called Lynyrd Skynyrd not 3 guitar army.

I was in the Army stationed in Germany in 81-82, this song became an anthem to soldiers and families who had only a couple months left before they returned to the U.S.
