My Perfect Submariner: Why I Prefer Tudor Over Rolex + Unboxing/Review
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today I not only unbox a Submariner ref. 79090, but after more than a week of serious wrist time and 6 months of hunting, I go straight into the review too. This is highly unusual for me, but when you have owned and experienced as many Subs as I have, it feels amazing to finally find the perfect one.
Why is the allure of the classic Rolex and Tudor Submariners so strong? Why is this reference better (in my opinion) than all other references (both newer and older) that I've owned and tried? Even if it is far inferior to the technical and engineering supremacy of the modern Rolex 116610LN, why do I still prefer this dated Tudor? How does it differ from my previous Tudor 36mm 75090 in blue? And why did I choose to buy this and not the historic Tudor 7928, which I previously reviewed several months ago, or for that matter, the ref. 1680 counterpart from Rolex? Why is this a better value compared to the more desired "Snowflake" submariners?
As well as discussing my personal feelings and thoughts about it, I share why I chose this over the legendary 1960s BlancPain Bathyscape MC4 that I bought and sold quite quickly. So quickly that I didn't even have time to make a serious video about it! Join me for some positives, negatives, and a ton of questions addressed in this special episode about one of my favorite and most iconic watches of all time, and one that will always be in my personal collection.

Tudor is now what Rolex was. Rolex is now luxury watch at those price points and Tudor is the appropriately valued quality tool watch.

@@chinaman1 yeah, in the near future oddly enough, Omega and Tudor will become the best value for money if Seiko keeps this pace up. GS will follow to I would suspect and this would be a shame.

I get what you're saying, on the other hand no professional wear a tudor as a toolwatch. They will wear a g-shock or something in that range, because mechanical watches are sadly outdated.

Stop being coy. Tell us what you paid for that thing dudester.
What got me started with those Tudor references are the Rolex touches like the crown and markings. Great inspiring vid again.
TGV, this video made me smile. I could hear the happiness of a true enthusiast taking joy in a watch. Congratulations!
Another fantastically written and executed video featuring such a fabulous Tudor timepiece. The video was made all the more special for me, at least, for also briefly featuring the Battleship USS New Jersey (aboard which I once served) at timeframe 17:25. Thank you again for yet another stellar video.
TGV: Please keep up the good work. You got me into the watch hobby and interested in horology in general. I thank you for your time and effort.
Love this Tudor... though for me, the 7928 edges it out as one of my grail watches, which your vid on that reference introduced me to. And was lovely to see the Philly waterfront and, in particular, America's most-decorated battleship, the USS New Jersey, behind your shoulder across the Delaware. As a former sailor who served aboard the New Jersey in Lebanon, my invitation is still open to provide you a free tour throughout the entire battleship as only a former crew-member can provide (we're able to go to all the off-limits areas no tourists ever get to see, personally accompanied by one of the battleship's volunteer caretakers, the hardworking docents). Keep up the great work providing such fabulous vids for us to enjoy!

Served aboard an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, and I had the privilege of seeing the Iowa as she was towed down to long Beach harbor. It was a foggy morning and as you picked out her haze gray profile, her guns and how she rode in the drink, I felt awestruck. Awesome, in the truest sense of the word, not the so cal surfer from the sixty's awesome, but a terrible majesty. I loved my ship, and I'm a small boy guy through and through but, you were truly privileged to have served aboard a ship that is a living symbol of American power at its zenith.
Great taste in knives! I just re-bought my own Kershaw Leek from when I lost it as a summer camp counselor 6 years ago. A piece of me has definitely returned. Love the videos as always! Keep up the fantastic work TGV!

I love the video. You really didn't wear your Rolex Sub so often that I wondered if you already sold it. But this video awnsers so many questions. I really love the way you go into detail to explain your choice. One of my favourite videos done by you so far ( and I follow your channel since the early days). I'm really chuffed to see such great content on the channel since you partnered with watchbox. It does not feel like a cop-out at all. It still feels very much authentic. Great video as always TGV (I hardly ever watch TV now -- I'm always here). I know exactly what you mean. It's only when you have a watch actually in your hands that any preconceptions go out of the window. I recently bumped into a little 1960s Certina dress watch when I wasn't even looking. Hi TGV, I really enjoyed this video because I too have been looking at the Tudor Submariners. My favourite reference has to be the 7016 which features the rose logo. My first Tudor exactly, bought in 93, mine had a Rolex strap. Sadly had to sell it ten years ago and recently replaced it with a Black bay 58. Though I love the bb now I will have to save up again as my itch isn’t scratched. Thanks
The Leek is a superb knife, although I prefer a plain blade bc I’ve never been able to amply sharpen serrations… Thank you for the great video. The Tudor Sub is one of my grail watches.
Love the H.R. Giger print in the background!
My only advice is that you’ll probably regret selling your 30th’s Submariner, since it represents an important turning point of your life as a first grail before your KZread career. It’s your watch and your decision, but that’s my two pence.

Hello bredren! Little bro always pushes the bar full force to big brother...those little brothers are wild and crazy.Tudor is a beast!
Heh. Way back my father gave me a Tudor 79190 submariner. Knowing nothing about watches, my first thought was it was a fake Rolex, lol. Never kept up with the box or papers. I wore it everywhere, doing everything. It is a little banged up, runs fast, and the bracelet is pretty worn, but the lume has faded to an amazing cream color and it is still a great watch.
I recently watched Austin Powers and now when you say "yeah" I can't help but hear him. I'm a long time fan but never made that connection before.
Good evening TGV, great you made it back with a real smasher. The Tudor is a great piece, in a way it looks much more rugged and solid than its Rolex countdrpart. Enjoy this Subby.
Great film TGV, very much enjoyed. I’m pretty set on a Black Bay 58 when I can get hold of one, is that something you could review and discuss? There ere plenty of reviews out there but I would value your opinion and insight greatly. I’m hoping it will be my ‘perfect sub’. Many thanks and keep up the good work!
The amount of watch lovers who are waiting for Tudor to make the Tudor Submariner again, and unfortunately I don't think they will any time soon. Tudor has invested far too much money into the Black Bay range.

its not that, imo, but the fact there is a Submariner on the market, made my Rolex. Why would Tudor try to compete it, when they got the BB and the Pelagos out there?

Their big brother would never allow its return. They can't put that name on an 'inferior' timepiece. Even if the average Rolex Sub buyer probably never heard of Tudor. It just can't happen. Besides, Black Bay is still the Sub. Just has its own name and more distinct design attributes to separate it and have an identity. For one, I kind of prefer the look of a coined bezel.

I wish I knew more about watches in the late 1990s, that was my peak earning period into the early 2000s before this area had a horrible recession. That's a great Tudor you have. I really like it. I can see the appeal of it. I prefer the ETA modes as the service costs can be a lot less since many will know how to work on it rather than the specialist of the newer in house movements. And they run into some weather around the Cape of Good Hope. A great read if you like nautical adventure
