This kind of nervousness disappears when musicians perform regularly. Brett doesn't perform on a daily not even weekly base, so it's normal not to be completely at ease on stage. As someone who sits in front of the saluting boy (if you know you know), I am happy to see a person with proper knowledge and vocabularies articulate pretty much the opinions I had after I walked out of the hall (especially the too loud woodwind part haha). I walked in expected the soloist part to be a bit louder in general (based on my past experience with this concerto), but after watching the stream (later on) and this video I can see why it was that way. 12:54 _"I'm not sure if it's a fingering issue"_ -- the score says to play that passage on the A string, which requires a jump from first position to fourth, so he may have felt that a harmonic was the easiest way to do a clean jump without an obvious shift, break or intonation problem. Note that he ignores the "A string" direction for the subsequent long B and A (he plays them on the E string), allowing him to play everything between the two harmonics in third position. So I think he generally wanted to minimise technical disruptions here, so that he could focus on bringing out the sweetness of the passage.
@MelodiousThunk
Жыл бұрын
Compare this passage to the opening theme of the second movement, where he plays the same leap from B to A on the A string and the shift is very audible, even though it can be hidden to an extent in the bow change. The leap in the first movement passage is played in a single bow, which makes it even harder to hide.

My mom is a classically trained singer who'd play classical music on Saturday's as she was baking. I grew up actually listening to metal and folk but got into classical about 10 years ago. Absolutely adore Faure and also Shostakovich and Borodin. My fav, by a country mile though is the cello sonata performed by Mstislav Rostropovich and Rudolf Serkin. BEAUTIFUL!

Thank you for sharing this. As a non musician, this review is very helpful. Personally I love Brett's interpretation on this concerto. Days before the stream, I listened & watched some live performance to understand more of the concerto. I was so nervous when he started to play but of course nowhere as nervous as he was! All the things you point out in this video makes me love his performance even more. It makes things much more enjoyable whenever I'd relive this performance again (I'm still listening to it everyday at work ngl). Again, thank you so much for your hard work on reviewing this concerto. Also, I don't mind watching 1 hour long video if it's this fun. :3

Live performances aren't perfect, but to me that's their charm - there's something vulnerable, genuine about them that makes it so enjoyable, little imperfections and all (on that note, anyone noticed how the mikes sometimes pick up breathing? srsly impressed at the high level sound recording ability there 😂) Would love to hear your thoughts about the Bach double and La Campanella!

I kinda enjoyed that 1 harmonic lol but apart from that I wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said. He def rushed a little in a few places but of course that's nerves and nothing a little more performance experience wouldn't take care of. I think it's easy to forget just how good Brett and Eddy are when we're mostly watching them play games and stuff. I knew Brett had been practising a lot so I came into the performance with fairly high expectations and I was still surprised and impressed.

I agree with the tempo in the 2nd movement as well. The fast tempo did catch me in surprise during live but since I'm not an expert, I'm not sure if it's just my personal preference or not. Overall, I already expected Brett's sweetness would paint the piece really well, but the perfection throughout the whole thing still exceeds my expectations. Maybe because I had been comparing it to the 2mil and 3mil, which though I still like to listen to, they were flawed, not like a polished concert recording, but this concert I can honestly say I can listen to it for the whole thing and not differentiating it from a top tier soloist recording.

Tbh I think that's going a bit far, though it was excellent I think he still has a ways to go before he reaches his full potential here. His sound and tone were absolutely delightful and sweet, and his phrasing was amazing, but I think perhaps he could have added even more flair. Not so much that it would have overpowered the performance, but slightly more flair to truly mark his own distinct sound for the concerto. BUT that just means I look forward to hearing much more from him! And in the meantime I'll be replaying this incredible performance on repeat! 😊

I don't think it's quite fair to compare this to the previous milestone performances. Not just because of the Stradivari violins, the orchestra, the professional sound recording, and the fact that because they practice 40 hours a day they're now both better violinists than they were at the time of their respective previous milestone performances (although these are major factors as well), but also because, especially compared to 2Mil, the amount of preparation time that went into this is almost incomparable. They announced Tchaikovsky around 4.5 months before the performance, and they've since admitted that when they announced it, they were planning just to prank everyone, before they evenutally realised the fans genuinely wanted to see that performance. So I think it's realistic to say that somewhere between 3-4 months of actual preparation went into that concerto (and, while Brett's more familiar with it, it's also the harder of the two concertos). Whereas we know that he prepared for Mendelssohn for almost an entire year. Which is why I actually went into this performance with relatively high expectations - and was completely blown away. What I mean to say is: I'll always love and enjoy Brett's 2Mil Tchaik for what it is, and this is not so much another calibre of performance as rather a different *genre* of what you might expect.

Technically he's not up there with the greatest of course, but from an emotional perspective this is one of the interpretations of Mendelssohn that have touched me the most. I agree he rushed a bit in the second movement, but he must have been so nervous. With more experience of playing seriously and the self confidence that comes with that he would be even better. I hope he (and Eddy) will get more chances of playing seriously in the future.

I walked in expected the soloist part to be a bit louder in general (based on my past experience with this concerto), but after watching the stream (later on) and this video I can see why it was that way. A bit of digression, but the microphone array set above the stage looks awesome and so non-intrusive to the eyes (both in the hall and on stream). @@PositivelyNice Yeah, I'm sure a lot of us were happy to look the other way on the odd couple of notes that didn't ring out as clearly as maybe they should have. I know this isn't what you were suggesting, but I have to say I got a laugh from the thought of soloists, so sick of non-stop Mendelssohn, that they're intentionally trying to sabotage it with bizarre, disjointed phrasing.
@MelodiousThunk
Жыл бұрын
Compare this passage to the opening theme of the second movement, where he plays the same leap from B to A on the A string and the shift is very audible, even though it can be hidden to an extent in the bow change. The leap in the first movement passage is played in a single bow, which makes it even harder to hide.

@@MelodiousThunk maybe, but not a rule. it largely depends on the instrument and the color of the strings, and it’s a personal decision at the end of the day to do what sounds the best. It’s not so common, I’ve played it both ways and listen other players play it also, both ways.
You can definitely hear that by the 3rd movement he's a lot more comfortable and playful. The first bit of this concerto is so iconic though so that's what most will pick up but still overall it's really a massive job.

Wow! You put a lot of effort in this "criticism". Thank you for that. I am sure that Brett will be very pleased with it. I was really worried that it was going to be negative, because I too listened to the live performance, and couldn't believe my ears. Both Brett and Eddy's performances (and the orchestra) were awesome! ❤❤👍👍 As much as musicians strive to give flawless performances (and that is a good thing), live concerts aren't about absolute technical perfection, they are about the experience as a whole and how enjoyable it is within the context of the situation, and TwoSetViolin putting their unique flavor into this concert made it memorable and wonderful!

What I noticed watching this video is that he does super well in the slower parts, I feel like he displays the emotions very delicately and softly, but in the faster parts especially in the beginning when he was most nervous, his tempo was a bit off. I listened to a recording of Hilary Hahn for comparison and in general she’s just much sharper, which works well for the fast parts but I definitely prefer Brett’s more emotional interpretation of those slow descends that you pointed out for example. It makes me really want to listen to it, which I don’t really get a lot with classical music.

I agree too. It's also a little...ahem...unfair to compare anyone to Hilary when it comes to this concerto. I'm no classical music expert at all but just by layman listening, her recording is really just above everything else I've listened to. She has nuances that other's don't even try and she's playing so fast that you don't realize how fast she is until you listen to someone else.

Thank you, mr Chopin!🥰
Mille mercis!! A thousand thanks, is very common in France and Belgium, so if just a few of us who watched your concert live could give you mille mercis, then the count could rise exponentially. (Brett can work out the equation)

@@MyOpinionsAboutClassicalMusic a sensible country, Norway.
I think the louder woodwind section might be due to the placement of sound receivers for the live stream, say if they were placed overhead. The actual dynamics in the hall may be different for the live audience.

That was my theory too, but some commenters here who was in the hall say it was the same there! So idk😅
I liked the pace of the second movement! But some really interesting comments, a lot of which I agree with :)

The tempo of the second movement is definitely a subjective thing, and not at all hard facts from me! I'm happy you found some interesting stuff, though 😁
