Besides the fact that they made this video in honor (?) of their upcoming 4mil Mendy, can I just say that, I LOVE AND MISS this kind of nerdy pure music content!! I can always learn something from their conversations! Twoset Academy we need more lessons from Prof. Yang and Prof. Chen! And also I noticed that, normally it's Eddy who talk a bit more, but here he gave Brett almost all the spotlight! Ah I love these two people so much!!

I agree: more "nerdy pure music content"! Maybe it's just because of my age, but I'd like to see them do ANOTHER video on the Mendelssohn, but this time using exclusively "OG" violinists. Lots of great young(er) violinists around today for sure, but we owe a lot of respect to "the old-timers".

Let's be honest, Brett nailed copying the interpretations we saw, as well as explaining why certain things are interesting. Even as a pianist, Mendelssohn is my favorite composer, as the "Songs without words" are just a beautiful collection of reasonably technical pieces ("songs? 😂). He was also extremely prolific, and passed WAY too young. If Mendelssohn lived to 90 we'd probably have world peace.

As an “organ aficionado”, his organ sonatas are also marvelous, himself being a skilled organist. My favorite by far is Sonata no.3 in A major, with the first movement based on the chorale “Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir”, following the (North) German organ tradition.

Well would you Adam & Eve it, I emailed a link to TwoSet's last vid to a musician I know to show him that 'this pair of comedians' as he calls them have finally made it. Told him about Mendy, their 4Mil subs, Brett's dream and the Strads. He is very talented himself but is not making it out there the way others seem to be: Lionel Yu (formerly Musical Basics) & Hauser spring to mind... I thought he'd be happy for them as anyone would applaud the success of another. This is what he replied: "I'm not pleased at all. Less than a hundred years ago composers like Puccini and Rachmaninoff had the same success, or even more, but they didn't need to be buffoons to achieve that, moreover, they wrote real music, which made them immortal!" Your opening comment becomes pertinent here... Oh, so they haven't achieved anything cos it's already written for them.... I despair. As to the skill level required to play such a piece, not a mention. And with an attitude like that, he'll not succeed....

Mutter plays (and dresses) like an opera singer too, which makes her playing a bit too luxurious for my taste. It is almost impossible to hear the differences between the good Stradivaris, but you certainly hear the difference between the violinists. I like Mutter's style, it is no nonsense but somehow still emotional. Very German if you like... Of the five here, Mutter and Hadelich are my favourites. Hadelich plays a violin that once was played by Henryk Szeryng, a violin god who seems to be almost forgotten.

The discussion around 5:20 about what makes Mendelssohn difficult is SO true. I am a singer, not an instrumentalist, but our conductor literally just gave this speech in rehearsal this week about how Mendelssohn is just elegance and taste personified. Nothing can be over done, nothing can be heavy handed, everything has to be just perfect. In that sense, very similar to Mozart, who Mendelssohn admired greatly. Mendelssohn is very simple and straightforward. No weird meter changes, not awkward as a vocalist (unlike Beethoven, who makes vocalists do instrument type stuff so it can be pretty horrible to sing ex. Ode to joy), the way the lyrics fall on the notes makes sense, no crazy dissonant harmonies. So it should be easy, but it’s not! It can feel very exposed and your tone and intonation have to be spot on. I love singing Mendelssohn but he is not easy!

Im sorry but that's simply not how professional orchestra works when accompanying a soloist. The SSO concert master is Igor Yuzefovich and concert master DONT change because the whole orchestra will look at the concert master as they will spend many hundred hours practicing together, building rapport, leading the orchestra, editing the part and the orchestra will get very used to the CM style, having a CM that haven't been practing with the orchestra for at least a year will greatly cripple the orchestra's leadership structure and by proxy, its sense if musicality. Love your eagerness though, just not possible.

12:14 "the hallmark of a great violinist...they have their own interpretation but it's so convincing". In this case, you're one as well Brett coz your 2M Tchaik is my favorite despite it being played by just the 2 of you. For some reason, I really preferred the way you played it vs other soloists' more professional recordings with an orchestra. I was actually looking for a professional recording that played just like your 2M playing, that's how much I loved it. 🥰

Can relate. As a newbie violinist (10 months ago) inspired by TwoSet, I was like help, I can't read the music, focus on my intonation (and can't look at my fingers cos my eyes are glued to the music), keep time and ensure my bowing is straight all at once. Fast forward to today, I find that my bowing action is improved and my intonation is coming along but there are other things now needing my attention such as slurs and key signatures.... and so it goes on... But we love it, don't we? And Brett telling us to 'Go practice' really does help but now I do it because I love playing and seeing improvements... Enjoy your musical journey, Logan. The cello is a beautiful instrument...
