My Nissan Pathfinder [2003 Pathfinder R50 4x4]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Nissan Pathfinder is my go to 4wd vehicle right now. It's reliable and capable enough to meet all my transportation and recreation needs. For all the camping, off-roading, and commuting that I do, it handles whatever I throw at it. These things can go all sorts of places in stock form, and when modified for off-roading and overlanding, they certainly hold their own against the more popular off-road and overland platforms. I'm happy with the way I've built mine, and so far its proven to be a worthy 4x4 for my uses.
If you're considering a budget friendly 4wd vehicle, the Nissan Pathfinder should probably be on your list. It's one of the nicer 4WD SUV's that you can pick up on the used market, with lots of variations to choose from. And of course, its Infiniti brother, the QX4, is a great choice as well. They're essentially identical vehicles throughout the entire drivetrain.

    Awesome! Thanks Every video up until my latest “junkyard parts” video in December was shot on iPhone. Since then I’ve been shooting on an A6500 with some shots coming from iPhone (like the driving shots in my most recent camping/hot springs video). The one exception is my “Idaho off road” video shot on a GoPro hero 8 black. I got my sliders on amazon, link in description though I believe they are sold out. I’ve got trail gear 67” diy weld on sliders with their mounts as well. Those are the only sliders I’d really recommend, the rocky road super sliders aren’t that great- weak mounting system.

    There are 2 very well maintained pathfinders Im looking at. A 2004 LE with 200k miles, or a 2001 LE with 150k miles. Both autos, both super clean and serviced. The higher mileage 04 is over $1000 less. Which would you buy?

  • @208Tyler

    @208Tyler

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m not sure. Which engine does the 01 have? That might make it or break it for you. 150k miles is pretty young. Especially if that’s a VG33E, that things gonna run forever. Check both trans fluids and test drive them. If the 01’s a VQ35DE, you need to research the IACV gasket failure. For either of which have the VQ35, check that they don’t consume oil. Mine consumes ALOT (1 quart every 700-1000 miles), which is a bummer. The 04 is drive by wire, so no IACV issues. All auto VQ’s have power valve screws, which you will want to get fixed. Pretty easy. The 04 has an electronic 4x4 shift, the 01 has a floor shift. Not sure which one you prefer. I’d probably take the 01

    R50 Pathfinder: 1996-2004 Facelift (front bumper/grill/headlight/fender) redesign @ 1999.5 model year. Two engines. 3.3: about 180 hp, timing belt, bulletproof. 3.5: timing chain, 240 hp. 01-02, the IACV gasket can fail, eventually shorting the ECM. Drive by cable. 3.5 (03-04) no IACV issue, drive by wire. Many 3.5's burn oil, or leak. oil cooler and valve cover gaskets are common culprits of leaks. burning is usually unfixable without engine overhaul. All automatic transmission 3.5's need the powervalve screws loctited. Should a power valve come loose, it can destroy the engine. If the rear end sways, its the trailing arms. 96-02 R50's have two ratios in the US and Canada: 4.363 and 4.636. There's not a guaranteed way to tell other than checking the vin plate in the engine bay for "HG46" or "HG43" If the automatic transmission has not been taken care of, failure can easily occur around 150k miles. Regular fluid changes and maintenance and good driving habits can keep them running well past 200k. The manual trans have seemingly zero issues. Two transfer cases: Floor shift transfer case, 4HI and 4LO. bulletproof. All mode electronic t-case. Pretty solid, allows for AWD type driving mode as well as 4HI and a slightly lower 4LO than the floor shift case. With all of these considerations, my favorite edition of the R50 is the 99.5-01 editions with the 3.3. I have an 03 R50, and it does fine other than burning a lot of oil (1 qt every 700-1000 miles or so). All R50's are built on the same unibody design with essentially identical suspension. The aftermarket availability of parts is identical throughout the generation. Everything said here applies fully to the qx4, which shares all driveline and suspension components with other R50's.
