If you like the original V8 Vantage (right and proper), surely a 90's Virage would be a good stepping stone? As for their usability, my Dad had a '71 DBS6 Vantage and that was his daily driver from 72 - 77, the car that turned me into a petrol head! The sound, smell, everything! His "toy" was a 59 Borgward Isabella Coupe.

Great video, I have a 4.3 V8 Vantage with a MT 6 speed purchased in 2018, at the time 18,000 miles in as new condition. Its been an awesome car and more than enough power. The nice thing is you can rev it out, hear that beautiful exhaust note and not hit speeds that will put you in jail. We play a lot of golf and you can put two carry bags in the trunk and luggage for a long weekend. It has the Linn sound system which is the best I've heard.

First of all: great video! I loved the elaborate list per car, as well as Ben's guest appearance and Neil's own input. My vote would have to go to the Vanquish S Ultimate. I think it wears the carbon accents rather well, and the unusual quad exhaust works well with the more aggressive diffuser. That granite color, though. My word, one of the best gray paints I've ever seen. Furthermore, even if you're putting miles on it, it should hold its value for being such a rare thing relative to the other choices. All in all, I'm curious to see where your Aston journey will take you! Keep up the great content, James!

What a great video, this is the best Aston Martin approach to market encyclopedia I can think of. Loved it. You're a wonderful videomaker, your style is unmistakable, your photography has a unique character, and although there is not much of it in this video, I must say your videos are thoughtful and with this one you created a stunning journey within the narrow walls of a shop. Quite an extraordinary mix of creativity and information. Besides, if I were in the uk, I'd already be on my way to see Mee's, you were pretty convincing. It's a WOW for me. Clap clap clap

I work as an automotive designer and I always look at my bosses Maserati, and always think, “one day”. When that time does come, I’ll surely be drawing from your extremely informative videos. But I’m in Australia, something like an Aston, even a scruffy one, is pretty pricey 😆

This was a great video for me. I’ve never visited Nicholas Mee so it was good to see the showroom. I also like the fact you don’t always follow the trend of most car guys by always agreeing that the manual version is the best. The last thing was hearing your emotional reaction to the xenon grey Vanquish S Ultimate edition. As you know, grey is my favourite colour but it has to be the right type of grey. The biggest compliment I can pay to any you tube entrepreneur is that I have watched your reviews of the Vanquish Gen 2, Rapide S and DBS more than once as they are cars I may add to my Aventador S. I re-watch your Ferrari videos again as you are a serious Ferrari owner and I’ve never owned one. Best wishes with your excellent content.

Hey Jay, I see where you’re coming from. Really nice selection you picked. You nailed it. I see the exact issues you highlighted, for me though, the shouty details on the Vanquish S would be a reason to go for the normal Vanquish. Probably would also consider a DB11 Volante, as they came down in price a lot. Interior of the Vanquish (2014 model) was always a bit too much either, with it’s quilted pattern and the weirdly shaped steering wheel. Maybe the V12 Vantage S then 🤷‍♂️🤭

Honestly, I'd say you go for the DBS. As a fellow DBS enjoyer and fan, I absolutely see the appeal of the Virage, and especially the 2nd gen Vanquish. However, none of the two cars would scratch the itch that the DBS, essentially, represents in my heart. I don't care if any of those cars are a better drive or a better car altogether than the DBS, I love the DBS and that's it, and that's what it comes down to with cars such as these. Buy it with your heart Jay, not your head, because a 2010 Citroen C5 will be a better daily driver than all three of these combined.

We do. In the UK cars are generally very cheap because of a number of reasons. Cars like this however are cheaper simply because barely anyone can afford one. In the UK most people are living paycheck to paycheck even when they are earning large amounts. It's a mindset thing rather than a money thing tbh. There was a story in the news recently about a MP earning £100k who recently had to sell his cars and his second house because he was going through a divorce and didn't have any disposable money to pay the settlement to his ex wife. Most people have no savings and just live in the moment of I have money lemme spend it

You said you didn’t get on with the V12 Vantage when you drove it. You do not need that permanent feeling after spending all that money so we can easily eliminate that car. The Vanquish S Ultimate which you showed is over budget however if you can find one for a better price (ordinary Vanquish S) it’s a potential goer. Which now leaves the DBS…. Its in budget ✔️ It won’t depreciate as aggressively as the Vanquish S Ultimate ✔️ It’s not grey or silver ✔️ You mentioned a build series making the DBS to how you want it, which creates content and viewers (£££)…. Overall I feel the DBS is a clear winner (if you had to take one there and then) not only a personal choice but also a business one. And just to bring the vanquish back in to the room, what if you found one that matches the DBS? (In budget, not grey or silver and also has room for a build series)…..?

To be fair the Vantage I would be looking at is the S, which I enjoyed much more

@@JayEmmOnCars In that case, this could be a tremendous U-turn on what I previously posted… I was following on the assumption if we had to take one of those 3. With the power to weight ratio and shorter wheelbase, it will likely be the most ‘fun’ to drive. If you find a automatic V12 Vantage S in budget… I would then swing towards that, purely because the joy it will bring that you could push it harder with confidence when cornering and the acceleration pull will feel more exaggerated. It still isn’t a easy decision… What are you looking for exactly? Looks or driving experience? The DBS and Vanquish I’d say show more class and presence but would you become bored? (Don’t get me wrong, the Vantage is still a attractive car). You can’t see the car when behind the wheel and thus it becomes the experience…. And with that my U-Turn decision comes into play and I’ll go for the V12 Vantage S. Hopping into the other 2 would be a nice experience but I feel the Vantage will make you feel like you always have to give it some welly because it will give you that rush of joy. If you can’t find the perfect spec, it’s not a disaster as the build content comes into play 😎 Apologies if this has made decision making more complicated.

I Know I'll never be able to afford one of these beautiful cars but I'm happy for guys like this that appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into these extraordinary machines. I saw my first Aston last year and to me, it was like looking at a Vermeer painting. A work of art that's timeless.

Have driven all of these as a former Aston owner. I would say that the V12 Vantage S is super exciting - unhinged and raw - in Sport mode but in Comfort mode it is just too benign. A real car of extremes. As the flagship car the Vanquish S has that extra level of polish - powertrain, handling, a comfort mode that is that bit more involving. It is a car that will reward you over the long term more than the Vantage does. A mention though to one other model which I thought was maybe the pick of the VH cars. The DB9 GT. I know you tested one before but it is just such a good car. Worthy of consideration I feel.

Never having been a particular Aston fan, I will say that my head has always been turned by them, I've just never lusted after one. However, James, this is some beautiful British metal! Great also to have 3 enthusiastic yet differing views in one sitting. You have to get the Vanquish S now and share it with us before it gets sold and the opportunity missed. Please? 😊

Vanquish S every time...but not that one at that money-I agree with you. I've just bought a 2018 DBS Superleggera for £30-40k less than that Vanquish and it is also Xeon Grey and you are so right, stills or video just can't do that paint any justice-it's simply stunning. The Superleg ain't perfect but it is utterly stunning IMO and a massive amount of car for £125-135k.

For me I would be interested in (not sure if the ages line up) a 7 speed auto v8 vantage. Of the three cars there the vanquish has always stood out to me as one of the more definitive Aston martins. And my favourite Aston is a period racing db4, even better if it's got one of those big bonnet scoops

Tough one between that stunning blue DBS and the Vanquish, which design wise just looks incredible and if that were a current AM Model in 2024 it would not look out of place one bit.

Go for a VH platform Virage. Rarer than DB9 or DBS and has good balance between the two. 490BHP plus adaptive damping and (IMHO) the best look of all three.

For me it’s the vanquish S imo the most beautiful modern Aston I absolutely love them. But it’s not exactly like I’d turn down a V12 vantage and especially not a DBS. But in the whole room I’d have to get one of the vanquish zagato’s if they have a shooting brake that’s what I’d go for

My ultimate AM is the DBS6, it's the best looking and most practical of the originals (think you even said that yourself when you drove one). Next to that it would be the very early V8 DBS. Next on would be the DB9 GT (Bond or otherwise), as that's the best version on the 9. But honestly, if I could afford any of those then I could probably afford a new DB12 and frankly, that car beats everything
