Glad to see you still appreciate Steely Dan. They will always be my number one. I'd love to see you react to some more Steely Dan/Donald Fagen songs. You've done some great Steely Dan reaction videos, Deacon Blues probably my favourite - even though the line "Drink scotch whiskey all night long, and die behind the wheel" seemed to shock you a bit. :)

Good choices and neat to see how your taste in music changes as you go further into the Artist’s and Band’s music. Hard to believe you had not heard most of this music until the last 2 plus years. It’s been great watching your journey discovering older music and the wealth of knowledge you have gained from it. I have enjoyed reading all the comments that your music reactions generate and I too have learned much from them. You have generated an interest in me to broaden my horizons and listen to music that maybe I had not fully understood or liked. So thank you for taking me on your journey and sharing your insights on the music I grew up with and love.

I think what you'll discover in a few more years is that it's impossible to pick a top 5, or 10, or...any top whatever list. Music preference after you've heard tens of thousands of songs really boils down to your mood at the time. Rush is a great band, but there are many days that I'm just not in the mood for that sound, so they drop out of the top hundred for that day. BTW, Steely Dan couldn't make my top 100 on any day, but that's the beauty of art. It's subjective and we're fortunate to have access to so much different music to choose from. ( Oh yeah...Neil Young is #1 for me today.)

A couple friends of mine and I are all rock junkies and we made a challenge to each other to pick out top ten rock bands or acts. It was way harder than I thought. Eventually I realized that it wasn't so much about the bands you want to be on the list, but rather the ones you can not leave off. I've been in guitar player in my whole life I am 36 years old. And I can't say that any particular guitar player is the greatest guitar player of all time, because that is all subjective. But I will tell you the most humbling guitar player of all time is David Gilmour. I have never ever ever heard him mess up anything. He's on point his tone is incredible his style is incredible, he plays with emotion he plays with control he plays with skill and he plays without arrogance. He will humble you as a musician, as well as humiliate you but in a good way. I'm so glad to hear they made your top five

Great comment here mentioning style. Style is huge, I'm not a guitar player but I can generally distinguish the pretentious from the humble players. I know so many people don't think the band should have continued but Brian May is still killing it night after night on guitar and Roger Taylor is still doing great on the drums and they both can still sing and they look like they're having so much fun on stage. Freddie is so hard to replace and his really missed. Adam has the voice and showmanship to still bring in the crowds and continuously selling out. Had no idea who SH was, but let me tell you, all 3 were top tier performers. I'll be 65 next week, and I went to many, many concerts back in the 70s, then less and less through the years to now. But that concert last weekend was one of the best I've ever been to! Thanks for sharing your top favorites with us, Jamel! 💙✌

I had a feeling after you watched the Wall that PF was moving up and that is a solid top 3! My list would be swapping your 1 and 2 and replace 4 and 5 with Dire Straits and Black Sabbath. Just outside them SRV/Double Trouble. I never got into Grateful Dead even though all my college friends were Deadheads but respect to them for creativity and community. Also, gotta give respect to the Beatles and their creative influence on music. That's one band I'd never argue being in anyone's top 5. Me personally.. I just don't connect with it on a deeper level.

As much as i love the Barrett era, them not having a captain and fumbling for a direction left 4 individuals learning how to fall into a slot which IMO is why they came up with these great songs, they simply listened to each other and added to what was happening. A great example of where the parts total something far greater as the whole.

Comment on Pink Floyd: careful with that prog, Eugene! If you start getting to know the other big '70s prog groups ie Yes, Genesis, King Crimson on an album basis, they'll start filling up your top 5 list real quick considering that "Close to the Edge" and "Supper's Ready" so quickly became your top 2 songs. And I seriously think that early Genesis does not get enough love on these reaction channels because a lot of their fans got into them after Peter Gabriel left, but their five albums from 1970-1974 is all brilliant "journey music" with a lot of feeling and drama. 1. Genesis 2. Pink Floyd 3. The Beatles 4. Can 5. Stereolab

Glad to see the Grateful Dead stay in your top five, and glad to see Yes get in your top ten. I'm a 63-year-old Deadhead who got on the bus in the spring of 1980 (although saw them in high school in 1973) as a college senior. Yes was my favorite band from seventh grade until I discovered jazz and the Dead, and I revere them to this day. Pound for pound, Jon Anderson is one of the most spiritual guys on the planet. Also really, really glad you got a chance to see Dead & Co. As the Grateful Dead "Fare Thee Well" shows were essentially supposed to put a bow on the whole thing back in summer of 2015, then Bobby Weir enlists John Mayer and re-gathers the drummers to write another essential chapter in the Dead's storied history, for seven years this October.

Great list, Jamel! Not surprising that you, as someone younger than myself, would connect more with "progressive" bands, because "message" is important to progressive bands in a way that is a little different than older-school bands, whose "message" was more about fun, sex, partying. One of the things I enjoy about older school bands is that they didn't always beat me over the head with "message" or moralizing - sometimes if you want to just unwind and rock out, listening to groups like Pink Floyd or Rush is more difficult, because its impossible sometimes to detach the "message" from the "music" - they are so interconnected. Sometimes you just want to turn it up and blow the speakers out, and not get wrapped up with "message"...and that's when some of the older classic bands shine thru, because of the brilliance of the music. They can transport you, without having every song necessarily be a "teaching moment."

When I was a kid, I had a favorite of pretty much everything. Now it depends on too many things. I don’t know how much deliberation you put into a top-five list, but I suspect it’s difficult. I don’t know if I could do it. Maybe a top 10, or maybe a top five in a smaller category. All that said, Pink Floyd was my number one at a certain time in my life. i’ll put them on a shelf for a long time, occasionally picking them back up… Usually one of the Stranger albums. You’re placing them as number two has me feeling like a revisit is in order. Again, mad respect that you manage to settle on a top five, fluid as it may be.

Also, if you get a chance, check out Franz Ferdinand: singer has the deeper tenor old school voice, (a bit like Bowie, Elvis, Queen or Doors), the beat is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and they have a retro mod vibe like early Stones or Beatles. Songs I’d recommend by them: “Take Me Out” “Walk Away” “Dark of The Matinee” “Darts of Pleasure” “Call Me” (Blondie Cover) “Jacqueline” “No You Girls” “The Fallen” “Katherine Kiss Me” I’ve seen them in concert twice, and both times they impressed. I’d start with the studio versions first though. I think you’ll very much enjoy them. 😊

…btw, a small footnote in Rush history, it was Robert Plant that brought Rush back together in the 90s when Rush was in a 5 year Hiatus

That’s the beauty of music, it’s so subjective and there’s so much good stiff out there. I’m not sure if any of these would be in my top five, but it’s just about enjoying all the great music that’s out there, bless!

Great top artist list!!!! We have a lot of the same favorites. I’m recently separated and the song “Don’t think twice, It’s alright” really helped me put words to how I felt. It’s originally by Bob Dylan, but I think you should check out the Joan Baez version!!!!

I think he's hit the peak with those three bands and nobody will probably ever crack into this solid top 3. Number 4 and on will probably remain fluid.

Pink Floyd is #1 on a list of 1. That combination of people, events & era can't be duplicated. I am 66 & except album art & posters, Floyd had no visuals. It was your mind's eye & them. Walking into the next room of music, 1. Captain Beyond. 2. Wishbone Ash. 3. Guess Who. 4. CCR. 5. Uriah Heep. King Crimson is quite good as well as.
