Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a question many of you have been asking over the past few months. "Joe, which airline do you work for now?"
Finally, I can make an official statement on that, we´ll talk a bit about my previous airline and I´ll give you guys some advice on how to start your airline career!
I´m sure many of you know that my former employer was Germanys second largest airline, Airberlin. I must admit I had the time of my life with Airberlin, who which I flew for the past eight years. Transitioning from the Beech King Air 200 to the Airbus A320 was a huge step, but I fell in love with the A320 from day one. I used to nickname it the "Babybus" compared to it´s larger mother the Airbus A300. But most importantly Airberlin gave me the wings I needed to start my career in the airline industry. So over the course of time , I was based for one year in Stuttgart, three years in Düsseldorf, which is an awesome city, if you have a bachelor pad like I had in the city centre. And after fours years being on the waiting list for my home base Munich, I got a call on my 30th birthday by my friend Patricia, who worked at human resources, saying:"Hey Joe, a colleague of yours cancelled his transfer to Munich, your next on the list, now is the chance to get transferred otherwise you have to wait for another three to four years." Can you imagine the birthday celebration that weekend with my boys in Munich, it was legen.... wait for .... dary!
Another four years of Airbus flying out of my hometown, and it just couldn´t get any better than that. 20 minutes to work by car, nicest colleagues, which many of them just came from the Boeing 737. And lots of them kept saying, "Joe if you haven´t flown a Boeing in your life, you haven´t really flown a plane so far". I kept replying, "I would love to fly the 747 one day, that´s always been my dream". And having said that, a few months later there was an announcement on our Intranet stating, "Fly the 747 for two years via a temporary employment contract". You didn´t have to ask me twice, I immediately applied. I flew up to Berlin to have the interview and got to meet three very interesting people. The chief pilot, a psychologist, and a lady who was head of recruitment.
The interview lasted roughly an hour, in which they were very straight forward about their pros and cons of their airline and so was I about my strengths and weaknesses. Don´t expect that from every airline, a lot of them just shine with their advantages but never talk freely about their disadvantages. Nevertheless, after a 20-minutes discussion, the lady from recruitment called me back in and with a smile on their face congratulated me that I could start asap. I was hooked and immediately wanted to get started. Sadly a few weeks later Airberlin called me up and said, Joe we´re sorry but we´re gonna have to stop the project, as we are going to face a shortage in pilots very soon and need every pilot to stay with us. So my dream of flying the 747 got ripped away from me.
But see more what happen a few years later :)
Thank you very much your time, wishing you all the best, and don´t forget "A good pilot is always learning"!
See you next week
Your "Captain" Joe

Every pilot job is a cool one - personally if I were to fly professionally, I'd want to fly turboprops like the Q400 or Saab 2000. Sadly there is no chance of me passing a Class 1 medical so flying commercially is off the table. Everyone gets their own excitement from aviation in different ways, and I'm sure many people love flying Airbus planes, many love Boeing, many love the flying shed the Shorts 360!

Agree. Boeing is more of old school, Airbus is much more advanced. Boeing is like driving a car without ABS, traction control, EBD etc. while Airbus is like car who not only comes with these features but also ones like ESP, surface sensing suspension etc. I would personally prefer Airbus, not to forget the comfort of having open space in front of you & a table unlike Boeing

And with freighters, it's multiple big doors to boot :p I actually had to support a CargoLux flight when it got grounded overnight far from home with sensitive cargo. The flight engineer told me he actually prefers Boeing, as it is much more straightforward and fixable than the sealed black boxes on an Airbus. Kinda like an (older) Samsung Galaxy vs an iPhone, or a body-on-frame pickup vs a modern monocoque. That's why Boeing craft of all ages still get air time, whereas it's rare to find an Airbus that makes it past 30.

Don't feel sorry about being direct. Nothing about aviation is easy. I've spent over 8000 hours of my life working on the design of the 747-8F & 747-8IC. Owning rev - of a majority of the oxygen tubing system on the IC, to being a senior checker/lead of the modeling and drafting for the wing group for years, I can with so many lives on the line say I never let anything that did not meet our strict and ever changing standards by. I take a lot of pride in that, it was not easy to almost completely re design the plane in a new software, and or updating Mylar drawings from the 60's. That said, the 777 is hands down the most reliable, best engineered, most trusted, commercial aircraft, you can fly on today. Just ask the pilots. I'm so thankful to have spent the time I did working on the amazing teams I have. (Now once the planes have passed our inspections and FAA inspections, the carrier chooses to have their own maintenance team do service or rarely ours, it's out of our hands so it's up to you to choose a responsible carrier...) So think twice about flying carriers with a poor history.

(I'd say I'm more used to it on some internet car forums, KZread is more of a free for all and I don't have any video's on this account) It makes me feel honoured in a way that someone put the effort in to vet me, make a reply and even word it in a way that gets the point sunk in. I don’t think you will really read my post, but it’s worth trying. First of all congratulations for your new job at Cargolux and flying the beautiful 747. I used to fly for LAN Cargo flying the 76 and now I’m flying for an airline full of A320. There are many many differences between Boeing and Airbus. First, the fact that you’re no longer CM2, now you’re s first officer and many things change mainly in the ways of thinking and developing in your scan and many duties. Second, you will have to flare much more higher. In the 76 the flare was around 30’ flare, and at 20’ idle, here is around 50-40’ flare and then reduce thrust to idle. One big big point here is that in Boeing you will decelerate the throttles and hence the thrust, while in airbus while you set the throttles to idle either super quick or slowly the decelerate rate of engines is always the same when auto thrust sooooo just hang on tight while you find the speed to move the throttles to idle. The faster you set them to idle it will fall like a rock, the slower it will float. You might don’t need that but no one will tell you this unlesss you’ve flown Boeing and airbus and vice versa. Much of good landing the Boeing is in the throttle. I have 6k flight hours in the 76, and I also used to fly cargo only. It’s fantastic but no more clapping. Congratulations again !
