I own the same watch myself and I love the simplicity and easy to read dial. With the watch being minimalist as it is I find that it looks great on just about any strap you put it on. So it's easy to dress up a bit or make it a bit more sporty, depending on the occasion. Great review of a beautiful watch.

I have 11 IWC watches including Big Pilot 5002 and vintage Portugieser from 1949 (34 mm). I think they are equally great sizes. They are just different. I also have 6,5 inch wrist and no problems at all: 34 mm vs. 46,2 mm.

Try it at the store first. I see the lug to lug is nearly 50mm. I bought the little reissue of the Hamilton W10. It was put head to head against this IWC in a Hodinkee article. It’s called the Hamilton Pilot Pioneer but it’s basically the W10 reissue. A 1:1 reissue of the 1973 original. It has been the perfect daily watch. It has lost about -1.2 sec a day. I made a custom leather strap for it. What an amazing watch. At a fraction of the IWC price. It’s 36mm. Lug to lug is 41mm. Nice and compact. Exactly like the original.

Great video. I really considered this as a nice daily wearer. However, I just decided I wanted something more interesting to look at day after day and a little functionality. I ended up going with the black JLC Polaris as it has a timing feature that is useful when BBQing and while still having a simple black dial, it still has some style and looks great on the brown strap. Congrats on your purchase and say hi if you ever make it out to Oahu... lots of ceremonies out here lol

Firstly thank for your service and secondly I've been wanting to see you with a field/military style watch for ages. I can't wait to see outfit videos with it. It really appeals to me because last Christmas I got a lovely 38mm Hamilton Khaki field mechanical field watch and I love to death. That and the spitfire are very similar so great buy!

I appreciate you explaining where you were coming from, and why you picked this over something else. The perspective of somebody who clearly knows watches, but is not solely operating a watch channel is nice. For me, the fauxtina, but most importantly the lack of that sweet IWC bracelet is my issue with the Spitfire. I think the size is great though, I love the Spitfire inspiration, and the red line of text is an easy way to cater to my taste. I recently became interested in the Mark XVIII, though the movement for the price was one of my issues. I also got to recently try one on, and although not “too big” for my 7-1/4” wrist, it wore a bit flat with those longer lugs. Unfortunately, the AD Iw as at did not have the Mark XX yet. That shaves about 2mm off the lug-to-lug, if I recall. That could make the difference. I also like the longer markers at 3/6/9/12, changes to the hands, and that 5 day power reserve movement is a huge step up. Despite the $750 price increase, it seems like a better value than the XVIII. My only other issue is the Junkers plane on the back is a bit uninspiring. What are your thoughts on the Mark XX?

I recently inherited my grandfather's Army-issued watch from WWII (he served in the Philippines). I love the streamlined, minimalistic style of military and military-inspired watches. Once you start thinking about it, it's kind of crazy how many iconic fashion things come from military design (trench coat, combat boots, camouflage pattern, etc.)

I've seen this at my local watch shop and it drew me in. I dig it. I have the Hamilton Khaki that does a great job with the fauxtina as well (looks more realistic with the various shading). I like this IWC better than the newly announced Tudor Ranger. Might have to give this a serious thought after a few others in my queue.

The Spitfire is a nice watch. I own a Mark XVIII myself and I love it! I have heard that IWC will be releasing a Mark XX soon with the "in house" movement and a 120 hour power reserve. It's also supposed to have that quick change strap changing option and it's going to have a shorter lug to lug distance. I saw this on Reddit and apparently they are already showing these at the IWC ran boutiques.

Beautiful timepiece! I love this one and the 43 mm big pilot. I didn't know you were in the army, I thought you worked in finance or something. Yesterday I applied to join the national guard in the French air force.

I've never been much of a watch person as I don't ever wear a watch. I collect art. But my partner collects watches. I'm always looking for something new for him and this looks like it would make a nice present. I love all the nods to the "Spitfire" of WW2 London. This is lovely. Thanks for the Ebay tips. I've had bad experiences there with all sorts of fake items over the years but the last time I used Ebay was a decade ago!

That is a super sharp looking piece of kit.

Good honest review, I am with you on the size, 36mm is quite small, although many of the field watches in the 40's were small. It is good to base the watch on a classic vintage aircraft, but to be honest with you, although keeping it simple is good, they could have just added a little bit more of the spitfire colouration to the dial, otherwise you do not see the connection.

Very nice! I think the one thing that would push me over the edge to buy one of these (might sound silly) would be if all of the numerals were fully lumed.

Hi Brian - congratulations on the new Spitfire. Great minds think alike...I have been debating this watch and another and have it in my "watching" section (unintended pun) in Ebay and favorites in C24. I too prefer the history and sizing of the Spitfire vs Mark XVIII. While I have not served, my father was in the USAF and was a private pilot (later on), flew mostly Cessnas and Beechcraft. Have been looking at the Big Pilot for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger. I considered the new smaller version of the Big Pilot (43mm vs 46mm) but it looks too much like a bigger Mark rather than a smaller Big Pilot. The Spitfire is a great watch too but I already have more incognito watches and want something a bit bolder now and then. Congrats!

Excellent choice and design, but I’m a bit biased. I purchased mine (with leather strap) in 2019. It’s sort of a hybrid field/pilots watch. Pairs well with my olive green strap from Erika’s Originals and my OCP. uniform.

Congrats on this new piece. I hope they put the movement from the spitfire into the Mark XVIII then that could be a pretty compelling option. It would potentially also fix the date window position which is offset on the current version. The Spitfire date window looks aligned with the numerals.

I just got my Hamilton watch today! The unboxing looked almost exactly like that. The problem came when I opened the box....and it was empty! After 5 minutes of panic, I realized they had packed it separately in a clear plastic box. Since it was wrapped in white paper, I thought it was just packing material. I do agree, the Hamilton was a little smaller than I expected. Thank you for the information on the authenticity guarantee from Ebay (one of the few times I didn't skip ahead). The Spitfire looks good on you.

I have the Spitfire in bronze. I'm not really into bronze watches but this one works really good. And talking about the Rolex 5517 milsub. I have the 5512 which is very similar but not a mil.

Lovely watch, as a brand, iwc are number 1 for me, just love the look of all their watches. I own a mark 18 in black, it's so versatile and is by far my favourite watch. Iwc watches are very classy, enjoy your spitfire.

I’ve been debating getting this and I’d only be able to if I sold my Seiko sje093 62mas recreation and I just can’t. It’s too beautiful and limited. I’ll have to wait for now.

I own a IWC Mark XV that I bought over 22 years ago with the first batch of money I had to spend on a real watch. I’d wanted an earlier Mark since I was a kid but they didn’t make them anymore. I still love my IWC and although I own a dozen other watches now, I still find I wear the IWC almost every day. It’s a great watch and it’s almost indestructible. You can’t go wrong with an IWC Pilot based watch, which one is just a matter of choice. Enjoy!

The only thing I don't really like is the thickness of the NATO. If my style was overall more casual I'd probably get a lot more use and wear out of this watch, but after the honeymoon period, I'm wearing it much less now.

what do u think of the newly release IWC Mark XX? Seems pretty hot with the 120 power reserve :)

Congrats, great watch! I prefer the Spitfire too, that 1mm does make a big difference, especially on a watch that is all dial. There are three things I wish IWC would do with this, lume all the numerals, blue the hands and offer a 37-38mm option. I'm wearing a 39mm Damasko DS-30 right now but it has shorter lugs than the IWC so I feel it wears much better, even though they look about the same. Also thank you for your service!

I also have the Spitfire Chrono... love it! I always considered IWC Pilots and wanted to add one to my collection but couldn't make up my mind. TopGuns are too expensive and Petit Princes too shiny.. so it had to be a Spitfire. And because of size it was between the Chrono and the date-only. Tried on both and chose the former.. couldn't be happier.

Great video. Did you ever consider the Mark 18 Tribute to Mark 11? That was a limited release from a few years ago. It has the original stick baton hands from the Mark 11. That is 40mm though but the plus side is that you can get the amazing IWC bracelet for it. The bracelet doesn't quite fit the spitfire.

I did not but those hands are definitely awesome.

I was given the chronograph version of this watch fifteen years ago. It was a reliability disaster costing 750€ several times to have repaired. I'm pleased that I was able to unload it, and I now have a Alpina Quartz chrono that looks very similar. Honestly do not believe the expensive product placement adverts, only Quartz watches are reliable.

What did IWC say to you? Was it out of warranty when you had to have it serviced? Sounds like you might have got a bad watch and I would hope that the brand would have helped out. Also, this is not a "product placement" for the IWC Spitfire. I'm promoting eBay's service.

@@hespokestyle IWC were uninterested as the watch was 25 months old at the time of the first repair (out of warranty). It was I think 3500€ new at the time. It is important that folks understand that the repair bills on these watches are utterly ridiculous (if you go through an IWC distributor). Never again.

@@nishantprakash5928 I'm referring to the "noughties". IWC have not changed the watch...which broke twice. This is inexcusable. It went back on both occasions to the place where it was purchased and was out of guarantee (which was not 8 years at the time).

I was close to buy the spitfire chronograph but went with the Zenith defy in titanium instead. The skeletonized movement which I could see trough the case back … 😩👌 so nice But I believe the green dial and bronze case is definitely the next one for me……. Just let Christmas come.😏😏

I don’t really consider it fauxtina since only some components are “faded.” It almost seems more like a color palette choice to mimic the plane. Beautiful!

OK, nowypu have to pair it if not possible with a supermarine spitfire at least with a Triumph spitfire!

The movement is "in-house" in that's it's made by a Richemont company ValFleurier for IWC, Baume and Mercier, Panerai and probably other brands(it's even stamped VF on the main plate) but IWC themselves don't manufacture this particular movement. All in all it's a great watch, I'll probably buy it when the time (money) comes.
