My Multiple Sclerosis Story | Traveling with MS | Living my Best Life

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Website:
www.nationalmssociety.org/
This video tells Bev's story about being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, and how we travel with ms. Bev is a ms success story, and we hope the same for you if you are dealing with it too. We tell how we travel the world with MS and how we live life to the fullest. We hope this video will inspire people and know that there is hope, even with an MS diagnosis.
What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. It is a complex condition characterized by a wide range of symptoms and can vary greatly in severity from person to person. Here is an overview of multiple sclerosis:
1. Pathophysiology: The exact cause of MS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers called myelin. This attack, known as demyelination, disrupts the normal flow of electrical impulses along the nerves, leading to a variety of neurological symptoms.
2. Symptoms: MS symptoms can vary widely and may include:
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness or spasms
- Balance and coordination problems
- Numbness or tingling in limbs
- Vision problems (blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision)
- Difficulty with speech or swallowing
- Problems with concentration and memory
3. Types of MS:
- Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS): This is the most common form, characterized by periods of symptom exacerbation (relapses) followed by partial or complete recovery (remissions).
- Primary Progressive MS (PPMS): In this form, symptoms gradually worsen over time without distinct relapses or remissions.
- Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS): Many people with RRMS eventually transition into SPMS, where there is a steady worsening of symptoms with or without occasional relapses.
- Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS): This is a less common subtype characterized by steady progression of the disease with occasional relapses.
4. Diagnosis: There is no single test for MS, and diagnosis can be challenging. It typically involves a combination of clinical evaluation, medical history, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, lumbar puncture (spinal tap), and blood tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.
5. Treatment: While there is no cure for MS, various treatments are available to manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. These treatments include:
- Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses.
- Medications for symptom management, such as muscle relaxants, pain relievers, and immunosuppressants.
- Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to address specific symptoms and improve function.
- Lifestyle modifications, including exercise, a healthy diet, and stress management, to support overall well-being.
6. Prognosis: The course of MS is highly variable. Some individuals may experience mild symptoms and lead relatively normal lives, while others may become severely disabled.
7. Research and Future Outlook: Ongoing research in MS is focused on understanding its underlying causes, developing more effective treatments, and improving the quality of life for individuals with the condition. Promising advances in immunotherapy and neuroprotection offer hope for better management and potentially even a cure in the future.

Jogn and Bev, My wife Cindy has MS. Her diagnosis was in her twenties, disappeared for two decades, then reappeared in her 40s. We are in our mid-60s, and we just traveled to Ukraine to help a school and plan to stay. The cobblestone roads in Lviv are beautiful, but walking on them is treacherous for Cindy. The more calm and quiet, the better. A moderate climate is a must. Emotional trauma and drama are similar to an out-of-control rollercoaster ride. Rest and a positive attitude get us through. Thank you for sharing!!

Heat is one of the hardest things for me to deal with as well is not sleeping. I would love to know some of your tips for how you cope with heat on your travels. Thanks again, Bev. Cynthia

Judgment usually comes from repressed shame, fear, and lack of understanding. Knowing this helps to take other's behavior less personally. It's like a festering wound in them, and instead of turning towards their own pain, problems, they project the "stuff" outwards. When you see that it comes from deep pain, and profound lack of self awareness...it's easier to brush off 😊

John and Bev tears came to my eyes as I Bev was also diagnosed with MS in my 30's in 1996. I also have relapsing/remitting and my first symptom was blurred vision and then got vertigo with unsteady gait. I Bev have travelled the world and still to this day will do as we don't know what's around the corner. I am now 64 and keep fit and healthy and so far so good with only 1 true attack back in 2008 so Bev keep on travelling and I wish you and John the best in your travels.

Such a hopeful video :) I am a breast cancer survivor who at one time was the main caregiver for my Mum who had progressive MS. My husband and I travel full time now and many of our friends comment that we are so young to be retired (we're 57) and we have many earning years left. We've spent the last two years travelling fast, slow, and in between. Sometimes we stay in fancy hotels, sometimes in our camper van! Here in Canada it is Thanksgiving weekend and I'm thankful you are healthy and I get to watch you while I travel the world.

Still can't walk around the block , hard to stomach when I used to bike 2o mi and lived full out til at 58 it came to crashing halt. Auto immune diseases are a real challenge.

Thank you for sharing your story! I, too, have MS. I am 57 and wasn’t diagnosed until I was 49. It was highly suspected for 15 yrs before that. My MS Specialist is certain that it actually began my junior year in high school when I had a period of horrible weakness and missed the 2nd semester of that year. My parents didn’t have health insurance so I saw drs and dad sold cows to pay for it until the drs ran out of ideas of things to test for. I was in a power wheelchair paralyzed on my right side when I was finally diagnosed. My first medication brought relapses, but since I started Ocrevus, I have improved greatly! We traveled to Italy for 2 weeks this year and I was able to climb the steps to look down on Florence. Keep on traveling and enjoying the experience while you can! I, too, will do what I can while I am still mobile. You are an incredible inspiration! Blessings!

As you probably know this is a very painful autoimmune condition and I take some very expensive medication to keep myself in a medical remission. Right now, I am doing great. Why in the world would anyone tell you that you’re “doing things wrong”? It’s YOUR adventure, not theirs. It’s YOUR choices, not theirs. It’s YOUR life, not theirs. You do YOU! No matter what others may say, you follow YOUR dreams. All that said, wow! I’m so inspired by your MS story. I don’t have MS, but I do have a 25-year struggle with my own diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue as a result of decades of extreme stress, as well as lung issues that cause me to frequently cough, sometimes fairly aggressively. My life now is about as stress free as is possible. I REFUSE to allow my diagnosis to dictate who I am and what I do in my life, although it does limit some of my physical abilities. I too travel as much as I possibly can. While I may never get to do one of my bucket list trips to hike to Mt. Everest Base Camp, I will go to and experience this great big world while I physically can. We will travel the way that best suits OUR purpose. You are a TRUE INSPIRATION! That your husband is so supportive of this dream and helps make your (and I suspect his) dreams come true, is a real testament to profound love that you two have for each other. Thank you for sharing you story. Keep on keeping on each and every day that you possibly can. When you need to take a breather, take it, then get back up and get moving along your journey.

Hello there! I'm back at #94, still watching your shows one by one from the very beginning. For the first time I jumped ahead when I saw the notice of this episode. Good grief. It never ever even crossed my mind that you are travelling too fast. Your reasons are yours. And we benefit from all the variety!😁 You go girl!! Not to detract from your support of the MS Society, but do you know of Dr. Terry Wahls? If not, she did an amazing TedX talk of her amazing rebound with MS. It can be found via google. Many MS people are finding relief with what she described in her book and verified with clinical studies. Frankly Bev, you don't seem to be needing any relief--you're doing so very well!!

I was diagnosed 14 years ago. I know what you mean about not knowing if you have 3 days or 30 years. I have been doing okay for the last 14 years. My biggest problem is being tired. We decided to start our channel 3 years ago to get out and travel more. I am on Glatiramer acetate. Question: How do you get your medicine while traveling? I have the same feeling we can't go fast enough to see things like the clock is ticking louder and louder. I'm really hoping for another good 20 to 30 years just so I can see everything I want to see. I have a bucket list. Good luck on your MS journey and we can only pray they find a cure soon, so we can beat this horrible disease!

Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you many, many more years of travel, and I wish Bev all the best (and a cure for MS!). Despite being as healthy as 66 & 71 year olds can be, my husband and I still travel quickly, for the most part. We started traveling later in life (he had never been out of the country until he was over 60!) and as anyone who is older knows, we simply never know how much longer we'll have to travel this beautiful world!

I just returned yesterday from a two week trip to Taiwan traveling by train, bus, light rail and walking through many cities carrying only my Osprey backpack (your recommendation). Thank you so much for sharing this. At times, I've felt some frustration because my iliotibial band (IT band) syndrome and related trochanteric bursitis cause hip pain when I walk too much. The years of physical therapy have resulted in very limited improvement, and the condition may worsen as I age. This has given me more of a sense of urgency about traveling the world as soon as my younger kid finishes high school in two years. Your travels and sense of adventure are truly inspiring.

I completely relate to this. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, and that is one of the reasons that I travel so much (and so fast) as well. My flare ups are not predictable, and I can either be fully healthy, or non-mobile at the drop of a hat. Also, the doctors say that my disease cuts down my life span. So, my husband and I are traveling as much as we can right now. I’m 62. Thank you for making this video.

Thank you Bev and John for sharing your story! You have inspired my husband and I to plan our travels as we wait for his eye surgery. We are researching Osprey backpacks and some of the other things you suggest. We pray that God will guide us in where he wants us to be. I have a feeling that you two have experienced many “ God appointments “ on your travels. God bless you both!

Totally understand your point of view and we encourage you to keep doing what you are doing. We retired early seeing others around us get ill or pass away so young. Time is our currency and our wealth because no amount of money can buy back your health. But having more time to see the world is like being wealthy.

You inspire me a lot. We need to persue our passion as we dont know how long we have to live. I only have travelled to 19 countries so far. I am a lymphoma survivor and have some limitations too. I started my little restaurant Ria's Ethnic Foods as soon as I finished my Chemotherapy treatment 10 years ago. Planning and focusing on that project got me through the brutal Chemo. I am thankful for being able to travel. Thank you for sharing. ❤

Thanks for sharing Bev. I also cope with an autoimmune disease and plan to begin slow travel next year. You’re an inspiration! I have concerns about medication availability but I’ll be figuring things out as I go.

Thanks so much for your vulnerability and sharing about your MS journey. We retired early this spring- and a big part of that decision was my journey with Lyme Disease. I too have tingling, nerve pain and balance issues and can relate to some of what you shared. But I’ve had great results with treatment and we keep moving our bodies, traveling in the US (for now) and being outdoors/taking care of ourselves with less stress. Thank you both! You’re an inspiration!
