What gorgeous specimens you have grown! Super impressive. I recently got a melanocrisis (maybe not a good beginner-ish plant choice but oh well they're gorgeous) and a gloriosum! appreciate your tips and definitely am going to binge watch your moss pole series!
I made my first moss poles today and I drilled holes in the tops of my bottles I’ll use to water them. I planted a philodendron Verrucosum on them. Thank you for your channel. I watched your video on how to make the poles several times 😂 I had never seen a philodendron verrucosum until I saw yours. And oh man I was in Love!!! Really, thank you for everything you do!! 💚

Aloha Sydney!!! Wishing you a Happy New Year, & an amazing growing season down under. I currently have over dozen moss poles going, all inspired by your KZread channel. But my Velvet Philodendron moss pole collection consists of only one Mican. Again you inspired me to go Velvet, but I mistakenly ordered two small Gloriosum’s starters before I watched this video. *Crawler*, oh well they’ll still be beautiful. After viewing this video I went on a “Buy It Now” binge last night!!! Ordered 2 Melanochrysum, 2 Splendid, & 1Glorious, all small starter size. Stayed away from your favorite due to spider mites & thin leaves. Probably take a year to get them established on moss poles, & year two before I’m chopping & extending, but the Joy is in the journey……. Mahalo Sydney for all the inspiration & wealth of information!!! Much Aloha from Maui~~~~~
this is my 1st time watching your video. I am excited to learn more from you. I live in Vancouver Canada. Love your huge tall plants. Thank you for your time and your expertise. God Bless !

i tackled the gloriosum crawling problem by growing it in a wider round pot.. planted it on the edge of the pot and i grew around the pot instead of off the edge of the pot.. it was killed by an unfortunate early frost here..
Love this… verrecosum was the plant that made me long for philodendron in my life too but I don’t think I could keep one happy so I’m going to be purchasing a splendid for now 😁 Great videos keep up the good work!! Much ❤ from the uk!!

Omg your collection is my dreeeaaam!!! Regarding melanochrysum, I also consistently struggle with them. I have been considering using one of those thin plastic sleeves that usually come with your dry cleaning to cover the plant and maintain humidity. I also am pretty sure she prefers a lot more light than other philos. I started giving mine direct morning sun for 1 hour.

I had a P.verrucosum a couple years ago that just sprawled leggy in a terrarium. After seeing yours I really need to get another one and try it on a moss pole! I don't know if you have seen it, but you should try a P.hastatum, the Silver Sword. It starts off a pretty silvery generic oval leaf and turns into a large silvery long heart shape leaf with a bright green midrib. It kind of looks like the mature form of P.lupinum.
I like the Majestic 😊

Velvet leaves are what lured me in to plant parenthood 😍 my first was a Gloriosum, and Philos I would say are my fave genus! It is so nice to see all the velvets side by side as some can look similar at first glance 😂 And I wanted to also mention that I think it is good to talk about prices and how to obtain plants, it is something that as a new plant parent I wish I had known more about. You Jan, and Fern from the channel WildFern, had me fall in love with the Verrucosum, so I kept eyeing it at my local nursery. It was available for $67 CAD at first but in a matter of weeks the price fell down to $37 so I picked it up. Because it came from a big nursery the leaves were damaged, there were pests, and the roots were stressed out so I ended up developing root rot - next thing I knew I had wet sticks. I was pretty devastated so I picked up another better looking one from there and I'm still struggling with it but at least its not in pieces in my prop box 😂 A couple of months later I ended up joining a Facebook plant group for my area and there were people on there selling rooted Verrucosum cuttings almost as mature as mine for $10 CAD!!! It was pretty sad to see that I missed out on these perfect cuttings from plants that were babied in pest free home environments for a fraction of the price. SO if you're a new plant parent, hit up your local plant community because those people grow for the love of plants, not for the cash, and you'll be able to grow your collection on your budget as well as have planty friends to learn from and share your plants with, whether its selling or swapping or giving. Facebook Marketplace is not that bad where I'm from, BUT STAY OFF ETSY, its an overpriced money grab, those plants don't actually cost that much! And thank you Jan for telling the people to be patient about price drops, I know the FOMO is SO REAL cuz I recently fell into a FOMO trap - I knew the plant was already becoming available in local nursery's and that even though its $150 now, it will be $30 in a year, but them genetics got me bad 🥹 I have a tinge of regret that still follows me, so just wait guys, JUST WAIT!

Heyhey, greetings from germany. Can u make a video about plants u miss Australia? :) would be verry interesting for people in other country
Love it! Question: purely based on aesthetics, which two of your velvet Philo’s would you consider combining on a single pole? I’ve been wondering how we might get some maturation action out of some poles with multiple varieties but with space saving in mind. 🤔 an experiment perhaps?
@sydneyplantguy
Жыл бұрын
You should give it a go, not really my style though :P I rather have multiple of the same plant on a pole to makenit lush. Suppose it depends if you like contrasts or not. Maybe the glorious & splendid in one would be nice

I remember when you could not find a Micans anywhere and if you did it was so expensive.
Just started the hobby with an "explosion" of moss poles (and some small plants attached to them) and other small crowling plants. So the part of the room with plants looks like the moss pole on your right , the Ph. lupinum... I always show my family the (hopefully) end-result (your video's). I just bought a Ph. melanochrysum... so perhaps I should have waited a while.... Keep up this great video's!

Hi, I recently discovered your channel and I immediately had to subscribe. Such beautiful and healthy plants. I am anxious to try your method with the moss poles. I have a question for you though. I live in Barbados where it has become increasingly difficult to find sphagnum moss, what would be a good substitute to make the moss poles? Also, would I be able to use sphagnum peat moss instead?
@sydneyplantguy
Жыл бұрын
Hey, thank you :) don’t use peat moss please, it’s not a renewable source so quite bad for the envrionment (besides the fact that it would just fall through the mesh). You could try using coco chips :)
