    This land is your land, this land is my land From California to the New York island, From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters; This land was made for you and me. As I was walking that ribbon of highway I saw above me that endless skyway; I saw below me that golden valley; This land was made for you and me. I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts; And all around me a voice was sounding; This land was made for you and me. When the sun came shining, and I was strolling, And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling, As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting: This land was made for you and me. As I went walking I saw a sign there, And on the sign it said "No Trespassing." But on the other side it didn't say nothing. That side was made for you and me. In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people, By the relief office I seen my people; As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking Is this land made for you and me? Nobody living can ever stop me, As I go walking that freedom highway; Nobody living can ever make me turn back This land was made for you and me.

    This is the best version I have ever heard so far. The song make me feel that I am a part of something bigger and a sense of belonging. But I realize, I don't have a country that I can called mine. I live in the United States now, but yet, I find that if I don't have a job and pay for all the bills I would not have a place to call home or a place to sleep. I only wish the song was true. Hopefully one day everyone can have a place to call home. A time when 100% employment for all those who wants to work and be able to afford a place to call home.

    Dude... I mean, guys, come on. This is a beautiful song. Don't ruin it. America is beautiful too. Sure - there's some very VERY big issues we have to deal with. But all in all, we have a lot of kind people, beautiful cities, vast forests, and love. Corporations and organizations are not people. Individuals are. And if you get your head out of your own ass long enough to speak to people individually, you'll find that they're usually great. Stop arguing. Enjoy the song, and enjoy your world.

    It is beyond me to comprehend how some people have said that this song is about communism. It was written by Woody Guthrie, who is writing about the sights, good and bad, that he saw and made note of while rambling around during the Great Depression. It is an insult to bring the word, "communism", into a discussion about this classic folk song, maybe the best one ever written. It is a beloved ballad of patriotism that extols both the beauty and virtues of our homeland, but also some issues that were disturbing to the young songwriter. This song is one of the greatest songs in the history of Americana. Period. My favorite version is by Neil Young on his album by that name: Americana.

    Why did they sanitize the most important line in the song? The sign 'no trespassing" wasn't in the original lyrics, it was "private property." And that sign wasn't made for you and me, it was made to keep you and me down, to keep us down and out. So many artists are afraid to take head on the capitalist institutions we're all enslaved to, and this is just another example. At least they included an allusion to the original line, but it's a shame they didn't have the courage or the conviction to present the original in its fullest critique.

    +Greg Greg No you didn't... The lyrics that promote communism are still in the song... People are just to stupid to understand what the artist is saying. You didn't give it new meaning at all. This song is about the U.S belonging to EVERYONE.

  • @greggreg385

    @greggreg385

    +Pause Films Sure we did. Words and phrases can hava a lotta meanings (ask any leftist who uses any sentence in any of 100 ways rather than the originally intended meaning) While Guthrie was promoting his ideal, wee simply took it and made it a whole new thing. We simply made it a manifest destiny ideal. "This land was made 4 you and me" - made 4 Americans in common and no other or common national idealism. The sign metaphor was indicating sharing. We simply interpret it as while there is an owner of private property the actual land is defended and settled by a nation-state rather than an individual. See it's simple. Song not loved 4 its commie socialist roots, its loved 4 its meaning as a national identity song. Now I'm sure there are s small niche market that adheres to the original interpretation and that is ok w me (every cultural movement needs a counter-culture) but the larger populace has embraced this tune under a completely seperate interpretation o the lyrics bottom line.

  • @PauseFilms

    @PauseFilms

    8 жыл бұрын

    Greg Greg You can interpret the song however you like it doesn't change the meaning of the song... Also I would love to hear how you interpret the lyrics "As I went walking I saw a sign there And on the sign it said "No Trespassing." But on the other side it didn't say nothing, That side was made for you and me." and "In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple; By the relief office, I'd seen my people. As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking, Is this land made for you and me?" ___________________________________ *"ask any leftist who uses any sentence in any of 100 ways rather than the originally intended meaning"* I also love how you made this a liberal and conservative thing. LOL but hey I'll play your little game, no one does this more than Fox news. They bitched and interpreted the Lego movie being anti capitalist and brainwashing children into a socialist society... Which wasn't what the movie was about. The song still means what it originally meant. Like I said many people are just ignorant to what the song is saying.

  • @greggreg385

    @greggreg385

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Pause Films 1) we are talking about the song not legos. 2) y'all say its ok to change words all the time (what the meaning of "is" is) so what is good 4 the goose is good 4 the gander. 3) that being said, the song had it's commie time. now the majority sees it as a pro America song. the minority clings to the commie meaning. that's all.
