My Mini Shredder SurfSkate Setup

Спорт

AUGUST 2021 IMPORTANT UPDATE: Guys a shocking revelation was made today... I have been skating a lie. I bought the trucks in this video 2nd hand, sold to me as C5's. But it has come to my attention that these are actually an extremely rare proto-C5 model that Carver produced in the past called the "CX5 minis", or "Mini CX 5.0". I am considering how I can update this video in the near future.
----------
As you progress with SurfSkating, you will probably find yourself spending more time at skateparks, or at least tempted to try it. I learned that the board characteristics best suited for shredding in skateparks were different than what I expected through a lot of experimentation. I take you through the features of a really fun skatepark setup, and what you should consider to improve your skating when you start spending more time at the bowls and ramps.

Thanks for the deep look at the setup. I've been over thinking what trucks to buy for a skatepark setup. I only have a waterborne setup on a huge omakase deck. I have a lush longboards mini cruiser deck that's similar spec to your sector nine. I've just bought some snakes which would go well with the C5s so I'm going C5s based on your video. Thanks again.

Great video. I found the key part of the setup for me was a 14” wheelbase, too. I have tried many setups with different boards and the 14” just feels snappy and tight enough turning for me I’d recommend people check our 80s decks - my Natas burrito breath deck has the same shape as your sector 9 but is slightly longer and wider with identical wheelbase. Highly recommended. Thanks again for a helpful video.

It’s great even for pumping just can’t carve as hard as soft can but I love it, the nose of the board protects the adapter well, it carved like a dream in the bowl and half pipe ! Thanks so much for the feedback Dave! Recently, since moving back outdoors after winter I have been using my Carver complete with C7s a lot more (you can see it in some of my more recent videos). For just cruising and carving, that Carver complete is better than this setup and I’ve started to feel more comfortable with it for grinds. I can ride fakie on it in the flats, but it still is inferior to the C5 trucks trying to come down a bank or quarterpipe after landing backwards. It is way worse for slides both because the wheels are too large and too soft, and because its deck has too little concave. It is also not great for ollies because the overall board profile is too flat. So, the board in this video is still the one I would choose if I were in a competition and had to show off my very best skatepark lines, but I do wish it was a touch wider, and it isn’t the board I would choose for riding the flats.

I tried a borrowed Swelltech JOB model once, and the front trucks were so loose that the first thing I did was scrape the edge of this beautiful deck on the asphalt when leaning into a snap... So I only used it gingerly but I think it could be a lot of fun with some practice and if I wasn’t afraid of damaging it. A YOW is next on my list, and then a Swelltech at some point, if only to be able to do those incredible looking full truck twist 360s!

I just cut an old board down for my kids to ride, I am using revenge truck on front and gullwing standard on the rear with huge riser. Got C7s specifically for skatepark years ago. Carving only. No sliding. Definitely not dropping in with these. They've been perfect for what I wanted. They're not wobbly when it counts. For skatepark the spring is tightened all the way. Bushings are cranked down pretty tight front and back so not much lean. Since carving is my main thing now (57 yo) I've been messing around with other setups. For example Bennett front truck with non-Bennett back (Theeve or Indy). Using a set of Randal rkps on one board. Carves tigher than I though it would. You're right, it's really fun experimenting. Nice to see your vids. Cool that so many are taking surfskating to the skateparks.

I’ve been back to using my C7s a lot recently and they do work really well, I may just need to change the deck to something with more concave. After skating on the YOW Meraki I have no problem riding the C7’s fakie coming out of a trick, but with C5 I can actually set up for a trick fakie which is nice. I just sold some Bennett’s without really giving them a shot, I saw how far the kingpin stuck out and swapped for CX but maybe shoulda taken them for a spin in the bowl first.

I like the feel of CX carving in the bowl, but for grinds on bowl coping I don't like the kingpin hangup factor. Does your YOW have Meraki trucks or an older model? I`ve come to really like my YOW Medina camo as a great all-around board even if it isn't perfect for everything. I've been using the Swelltech in the park recently and it is a whole different experience, a challenge for sure, but maybe not one I want to invest the time into mastering.

All shot in various places around Ottawa, Canada. I am getting more used to using my Carver C7 in the park, but every time I lose control and my the nose of my board smashes something I hold my breath that it doesn’t damage the swing mechanism. That board is super flat and I have a hard time keeping it under my feet in slides because of the lack of concave. I don’t have an answer on the CX, however, in the comments on my Oxelo surfskate review, a few people have commented on the similarities to the CX. Plus the complete costs less than a set of CX trucks.

  • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    3 жыл бұрын

I Haven't had a chance yet, but it does have a lot in common with the C5 in terms of construction. If you looked at it as a spectrum between traditional skateboard trucks and more surfy surfskate trucks, the CX are the middle ground choice. Here is a description of the C5 I took from Skate Warehouse's excellent description: The Carver C5 is the latest addition to the carver line up. This truck is aimed at skaters who are looking for a progressive Carver CX ride but want that performance and versatility of a regular skate truck when hitting the skatepark. This new truck blends these needs perfectly to produce a really unique ride. It retains that winning CX formula of a 90° reverse kingpin, but now the Kingpin has been inverted plus the hanger width and height have been greatly reduced. This allows the truck to grind ramp coping and rails without hanging up or sticking on the kingpin. The height and width reduction means it can now be used with regular popsicle shaped decks opening up the possibility to perform ollies and flips! All this and you still get the progressive carving, pumping surfing experience. In short, these trucks are made for the skatepark!

I'm going to continue with the lessons and am now kind of interested in learning some "street" skating tricks. I have a Carver Yago Dora with CX trucks. Do you think it would make a big difference getting C5 trucks or something like the Carver Sun Ray or Scape to help? I did try the instructor's traditional street deck and didn't like the fact that it's not carvy. I still want to be able to pump but thought that the C5 trucks might make it a bit more stable to learn things like an Ollie. I'd love some advice since you seem to be the king of mixing surfskate/street skate!

It is really tough going from a surfskate to a traditional popsicle skateboard, feels like it doesn't even move! I just picked up the Santa Cruz x Carver Screaming hand collaboration and it is a great compromise between the two. It is lower to the ground so ollies or any ollie based tricks are way easier, and it rides fakie pretty well, except if you lean too much you get wheelbite. If you have seen my Instagram, it is the board I keep bashing my shins with attempting treflips. The Sunray or scape would probably be similar, or even just throwing some C5s on an old school deck with a longer wheelbase.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Yes! When I tried the instructor's board, I tried to lean a little and it barely turned! Right now I'm really just doing basics, learning to kick turn and I'm starting to be able to backside slide almost to 180, but still struggle with frontside. I'm thinking if I really start enjoying learning "street" tricks, learning on more of a hybrid setup with C5 trucks may be something to consider. I'll check out that Santa Cruz x Carver board. I feel we both approach surfskating in a similar way and I've been going at it with my CXs, soft bushings and the yago goat deck from carver. While I have progressed a lot, I sometimes wonder if this setup is holding me back for an even better feel.

Hi David, this is a really valid question. When I did this video, it was the best, but it was the best out of 4 surfskates I had. I had tried others back then, but my overall experience was limited. Since then I have tried most of the major brands and I think that has helped round out my performance as a SurfSkater. This board, or variations of it (I have a similar board with CX, another with Sixty-six, another mini-CX) are still best for doing hybrid skateboard tricks while also maintaining the ability to pump and carve. But I now find that “looser” systems like YOW and Smoothstar and Swelltech are great, even better, for flow in bowls. However, some of them also sacrifice a bit in terms of being able to grind the coping, or do nose slides, etc. and definitely make it harder to ride fakie. So I have come to realize that if you have the budget, you really need a few boards for different conditions if you take the sport seriously, no different from other sports. Surfers always have a quiver of boards for different wave conditions, snowboarders have setups for backcountry powder riding that are completely different from their terrain park setups. I have been contemplating a new video that highlights the 3 types of boards that could get you through all conditions. Thanks for the great question.

Greetings! Great videos. I don't want to tell you stuff you already know, but wheel core, lip, and shaping has a lot to do with their grip and slip...not just durometer. I guess I just mention it because I see a lot of the surfskate community fixated on durometer alone, whereas having longboarded for 20 years, freeride and downhill longboarders obsess over the core of the wheel, inside and outside edges, and support to the lip. I wonder if you would enjoy some of the freeride offerings from longboard companies? Cheers!!!

Just pick out your desired size and go! Typically the rounded lip, stone-ground wheels are going to be your friend at lower speeds, whereas some "freeride" longboard wheels are designed for folks doing 50 foot standup slides at 40 mph...those wheels are likelier to have sharp lips and be difficult to slide at surfskate speeds.

I do have one that I set up, 9" tail similar to an old pool rider peralta, and I love it for airs out of the bowl, but coming from a traditional skateboard background where I used a 7'75" for way too long, I feel really comfortable on these narrow tailed bowls, I find I can really leverage using the edges, kind of hooking my heel or toe on the edge of the board and pushing against that to maximize the slide. I might get used to it on the wide board too with more practice, but I think a key takeaway I had from watching Ben Gravy shred waves on a rectangle plank of plywood is that good technique can make any board look good, so try out different shapes and sizes and just shred as hard as you can on whatever you have!
