My Messier Object Tier List

Ғылым және технология

Hello everyone, this video is my tier list ranking for every single object in the messier catalog. The Messier catalog is a famous list of deep sky objects created by the French astronomer Charles Messier. It contains some of the best (and worst) deep sky objects that you can photograph in the night sky, and in this video I see how they stack up against eachother!

For visual through an eyepiece I think globular clusters are great, especially when you take the time to just sit and examine the individual stars. However, in pictures, some of them could be just "meh" while others are pretty cool.

Fun video! My grievence is that I would rank globular clusters over open clusters (exception: Pleiades) any day of the week. Although if you've seen one glob, you've seen them all. And elliptical galaxies with little or no structure would go in the F tier. But that's all personal preference, not objective criteria, so there's no point arguing about it.

Because of this video, I spent my last weekend imaging all reachable globular clusters with my Seestar telescope, dedicating 10 minutes to each cluster, and believe me, it was fun to do it! what I learned from that night is that each globular cluster has its own unique character, unlike the pictures in this video where you feel they all look the same. Some clusters, like M13, are bright, while others are faint or obscured by interstellar dust, giving them a reddish or orange hue. There are large clusters like M22 and smaller ones like M75 which I learned because it is too distant and probably belongs to another satellite galaxy, there are clusters with some being densely concentrated and others more spread out. The stars in each cluster create unique structures; for instance, M5 reminded me of a spider with arms of stars extending from it. I love globular clusters because they offer me a glimpse into the structure of our Milky Way, also they are not affected that much by light pollution like galaxies, and they are often the first objects I show to any of my guests with my telescope because they are bright and can produce clear images in just one minute, unlike other faint DSOs that require much longer exposure times.

yup, I mostly agree! I just reckon I like galaxies a bit more than you do :) so many interesting objects are not Messier objects ... LDN, ARP, a bunch of NGCs ... I could make it simpler to classify... say of the ARP ... only arp273 is visible now in the sky in the northern emisphere ... cause I tried to find it and shoot it :) or you can make a selection by say FL required to image ... North South ... by seasons, etc ... we could make it in an spreadsheet with coordinates and such for easy access... etc ...

I feel like M24 deserves an A tier. With proper editing, i.e. by properly differentiating between hotter blue star cloud and background older stars, it gives such a nice color balance. This object is quite user-friendly, too, being in a bright part of the Milky Way. And I feel like it is definitely not less interesting than Omega nebula. Not to mention all kinds of nebulae present nearby. But yeah, waiting for the NGC tier list

@@AstroDragon33 you are correct! Also there are actually two nebulae in the line of sight of M46 one is Calabash nebula. Its star has the same radial velocity as the cluster that means it was a part of the cluster. It's wholesome to find missing links between stars and their former/current families. Best globular cluster is in the Caldwell catalogue, C80 the Omega Centauri cluster and it probably isn't a globular, but a dwarf galaxy with a black hole in its center. I'm guessing he's never looked at a glob cluster with a 10" Dob or a 9.25 or bigger SCT with the right eyepiece the way he thinks these DSOs are boring.
