We normally don't bother shop lifters because we aren't getting shot over the stores merch. But one time I just glanced at this really muscular mean looking lady's purse. She was known in town for being violent. So I didn't say nothing. Me and my manager sent eachother a "I'm not even dealing with it" look but we could see she had stuffed her purse. So I said nothing and rang up the few things she did put on the register. Next thing I know she unloads her purse into the register and apologized for trying to steal it and please don't turn her in. We said ok and me and the manager just looked at eachother again in shock. Cause.... I guess she felt guilty after no one stopped her.

In most corporate/franchise stores, yeah, but it's not the law. It's considered theft at the moment of concealment of merchandise (in most states at least), so by law an employee can stop you/call the police right away. Corporate policy usually dictates when, where, and who can stop a shoplifter, and the wrong person doing it can get them fired (safety liability). From there, it's a matter of safety, some people are genuinely crazy and will stab you over a can of air freshener.
@hasta_la_pasta_official

@Chloe As you should. The people who are supposed to stop them are supposed to be trained and given benefits incase an incident should take place. Don't place your safety on the line.

My work is on an anti-theft kick right now. We're supposed to keep an eye on every since customer. And approach every single person that walks in. We're made aware of camera blindpsots. And yes, we're told to approach anyone we suspect of trying to steal. It's rough out there.
This is why every retail store needs a security team.

That, my friend is exactly why it's very unwise to confront a potential shoplifter like that, since you never know what kind of motives they have or what they'll do next. It's dangerous, and is not worth risking for a minimum wage job.

not the shoplifter trying to steal deodorant 😭
Hard no! We had a false arrest policy. Even when I became a supervisor I hardly ever said anything to anyone just checked footage later
when i worked retail we had a policy not to stop shoplifters (stabbings are v common here) so i just had to stand helplessly as a guy sweeped an entire shelf of crisps into a bag
I've worked as a security once and I can definitely tell you, I couldn't care less if you stole something
I work at a Co-Op in Scotland part time during university. My job does not mean enough to me to have me stopping shop lifters. I see it happen. I check the cameras and mark the time and I file an incident report.

I’m in Scotland too and I’ve always wondered what wee shops without security do … what’s an incident report? Does that mean you look out for the people if they come in again, or do the police get the details? I once saw a guy come into a Spar, grab a handful of vapes and leg it. No wonder everything like that is behind the counter now 😬
Atleast they put it back
Here we usually just collect the camera evidence if it’s petty theft & a returning customer - until it reaches a point we then call the police. Last time it was a 14-year old kid who stole over several months before we’d had enough.
I was at the cinema tha Other day and I saw u in that advert 😂😂

I can relate my bosses tend to make me stand next to where the jewelry is.
It’s actually against the law for us to do that in america 😭😭not even the managers are allowed to do anything about shoplifters since in my state pretty much anyone can carry a gun and we don’t wanna risk it
That glitch tho 😂
Apparently my boss has driven after shoplifters before to get them to return items… we work at a dollar store I don’t know why she cares that much. I know I’d never risk getting hurt over a $2 bag of chips or something
where i live we're not allowed to stop shoplifting, only if the main management is present in the store we are allowed to notify them so they can talk to them or call the police. it's nice though so i don't have to worry about being injured or worse...confrontation...
The glitch oml😭

OH OK LOLOL😂😂😂😂🎉❤
Not worth getting shot for.
NO! As someone who works in retail. We cannot do this under any circumstance. Not only because we don't get paid enough, but it's also not our job to play cops and robbers with customers. Your manager should honestly just gove up and resign. He isnmt doing anything for the company, if anything, he's potentially risking the lives of his own employees. He doesn't need to be there.
13th here when she said that was scary did anyone see that little glitch?

Yep
If they're buying hygiene products, don't stop them. If they can't afford it but they need them to stay healthy, the humane thing to do would be to just let them steal.
Tiktokers learn what POV means challenge Impossible difficulty
So weird. Most big stores from my experience don't have their cashier's deal with shop lifters. If they have loss prevention, LP deals with it. If not we don't bother. You never know whos gonna be crazy
It's a managers job or security to confront shop lifters. Not min wage employees.
We are told not to do this, its security's job and once they've left the store its the police, as there's risk of ambush if we leave the store to confront them. If we see something suspicious we just have to inform security.
Honestly a guy came in sprayed one of the deodorants all over himself then refused to pay for it. If it wasn't for me being at work I would've lost my bloomin cool cause he also put it back on the shelf for someone else to buy.
No way, we're to tell the manager. If they determined they were stealing he called the police dept (we were 5 mins from one) and the police officer would be waiting for them to exit the store 😅
Got some social media lifters gonna need you to take of them thanks
Did anyone else see the glitch at the end? 😳
Girl... you are NOT paid to deal with shoplifters. It's not in the job description, it's not worth the effort, you don't owe it to your employer and your manager shouldn't ask it of you. If you see someone shop lifting from a big chain store... no you didn't. Mind your own business. It's already allowed for in the budgeting for the store under "wastage" along with damaged and expired products.
was that just my phone or did she just lag into a different dimension
WOAH.
This is not how someone who has been properly trained would handle a shop lifter. First off there has to be more than one member of staff approach them and secondly you have to let them leave the shop first otherwise you don’t have a leg to stand on and cannot legally use their actions against them
I'm from the US, so every store I've ever worked at has stressed to not confront shoplifters. Is that not the same in the UK?
@gemmagruesome
Жыл бұрын
Most bigger shops have security, and if not it’s *usually* procedure that you wouldn’t stop/run after them in case they get violent. I think if it’s maybe an independent shop that the owners work in that maybe they’d want you to intervene? But I don’t know - i defo wouldn’t go after them. Shops have loss prevention teams too and most stolen goods can be claimed by insurance so unless it’s thousands of £££‘s then it’s not worth it for an employee to get hurt and the company to get in trouble.
Screw shoplifters. They raise the price for all of us. I call them out.
