My Life At 500+ Pounds: Part I - The History Of How I Gained So Much Weight

Check out the blog post for more photos: bit.ly/Krock500LbsPt1
One of the questions we've been asked a lot since we started sharing our story is: "How did you gain all of that weight in the first place?" Well, the simple answer is - we ate a LOT of food. People overeat for a number of reasons, and sometimes it's hard to really understand why you’re even doing it. For me, I am definitely an "emotional eater." I tend to binge eat to get a temporary relief from my feelings.
Brian has always said that he isn’t an emotional eater, and I agree with that statement. In fact, when he gets angry, sad, depressed, etc… he doesn’t want to eat at all. It kind of drives me mad! I can't tell you how many times we’ve had an argument right before dinner - I'll go off and take my food to bed and eat while he sits on the couch in silence not eating. Yes, believe it or not, we do argue. 😉
So how did Brian get to be over 500 pounds at his highest weight? In today's video, we took the cameras outside the kitchen to Brian's hometown of Collinsville, Illinois. He took over and shared his story in the first part of a series called "My Life At 500+ Pounds." Watch the video to get a look back at his childhood and hear him discuss the history of his weight gain.

Thank you for sharing with us Brian. This video was incredible. I'm in tears because I can relate to your story. I was a weird chubby kid who was picked on too and I turned into a very big adult. At my biggest I was 350, which for a 5'4" female, I was huge. I couldn't walk more than 20 damn feet without being winded. I had a slew of health problems, including 2 auto immune diseases, and with my family history, it was only a matter of time before something happened to my heart. Long story short, I ditched gluten over a year ago and went vegan last November. I'm down to 241!! Went from a 3x to a Large in shirts!! I still have a long way to go, but I feel like a new person. My husband was 280 and is now 170. He looks like a different man and I'm so proud of him.Plants really are a life saver and I wish more and more people would try going vegan. You and Jessica are truly an inspiration for good health and determination.

I remember going to Disneyland and wondering if I would be able to ride anything.. it SUCKED being overweight and thank you for posting. I've been WFPB vegan for 8 years. I released 130lbs back to the Universe with love, and I'll never get it back. I'm grateful for my own health PLUS all the things that are so much more available to me now. I’m glad you are one of the people who aren’t concerned about looks, but for imminently practical reasons have chosen wellness. For their loved ones. For the sake of living. I say this because relating why you should care, when the physical appearance is not a big priority, is tough. You aren’t really interested in being a rippling mass of muscle. You just want to live better, for longer, with the people who matter. Thanks for sharing.

Boredom is actually one of the most common forms of emotional eating! Personally, sometimes my "bored" eating is actually more deeply rooted in depressive apathy - a sort of fake-neutral emotional state used to cope with stressful situations. But then sometimes I'm just genuinely bored lol

This was one of your best videos! You openly, honestly shared your journey into the world of an overweight, fat person. I'm 77 pounds down in my journey to lose 90 pounds. How did I get fat? Health issues including surgeries, years is struggling to eat well, then finally giving up. I couldn't lose weight no matter what I tried, so I gave up and just accepted myself and my fate of being an overweight woman. It wasn't that I didn't care, I just got so tired of the struggle! My WFPB life has released me from a prison of almost 40 years! I'll be 70 years old soon and I'm finally free. I love you guys! You are so fun to watch! Keep being real, it's what keeps us coming back.

Thank you for this, Debbie. I just turned 70 and like you, I gave up the struggle and stopped, for the most part, of worrying about how I looked although I continued to worry about my health. I have been making slow changes but the best one has been finally retiring! I no longer eat because of boredom which I did all the time at work, sitting in front of a computer and feeling chained to it. I might as well have been in prison. Now, consistency is my mantra. You have inspired me.

What a wonderful video! I am 20 years older than you but started eating junk food and sodas in high school. My mother comes from a small petite family. Grandmother 4ft10 inches grandfather barely over 5 feet. My father's family were all extra extra large height not morbidly obese. My mother had me on diet pills most of my teenage years. Weight was a major issue. I was on every diet known to man throughout my life. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and on and on... My body has been heavily damaged by my years of trying to be healthy but always falling off the wagon that has resulted in severe health problems. I have been morbidly obese (more than 100# overweight) for most of my adult life. After doing research and watching Mastering Diabetes I began trying to learn more about this whole food plant based eating. Started February 26, 2020. Has improved many things but my body is still extremely damaged. I am so glad to have found your channel. Since my lifestyle change many people don't recognize me. I am now obese but not morbidly obese. I want to lose another 50#. Your channel helps many people. Thank you!

Ultraprocessed food dramatically and negatively impact brain health by activating addiction pathways and contributing to depression in susceptible people. The only solution is to eat minimally processed whole foods plant based with no added fat/oil no added sugar. After 3 weeks we are detoxed, natural food tastes great, and we become able to care about ourselves.

Thanks for sharing your story, Brian. What you said towards the end really touched me. My husband, who has always been thin, said to me one day, “I want us to have our fifty plus years together.” I knew at that moment if I didn’t take serious control of my weight and life, we wouldn’t have that time together. (My mom, who was only 40lbs overweight died in her 40’s.) I’ve been overweight since HS, yo-yoed all my life until becoming WFPB. Since I’m a bit older than you both, okay not quite old enough to be your moms but you get the point, it takes a bit longer to lose. But slow and steady works. And it’s an adventure that I enjoy and feel good doing. Keep up the great work. Hugs to you both!

You two really do blow me away with your willingness to share openly some deep parts of your life journies. I believe it is a service to humanity. I thank you both from all who learn through your blog and KZread. Even if one does not have personal weight struggles, listening to your and Jessica's stories can help grow compassion for fellow humans carrying the burden of extra weight.

I've been watching you guys for a couple of months along with other KZreadrs. You guys were the most inspiring to me. I grew up in the Belleville and O'Fallon area so I'm very familiar with Collinsville. So proud of both of you and what you've accomplished. I've been plant based for only 3 or 4 weeks but I have you to thank for that. I love your show. Keep up the good work. You're truly an inspiration. ♥️

your HS pics are adorable. wearing the old shirt with the yellow shirt is a great touch - makes your transformation so vivid, . you had the all-American childhood, no devastating tragedy. Yet when we are food addicts, food seems like the answer to everything. Love you so much for sharing your journey. I'm cryin' now. and its alright.

I hope you succeed in anything you two put your mind to, but please keep giving us videos like this of your weight loss adventure because, they are so important to me and I am sure these thousands of others that watch your videos. Your realism makes what seem like an impossible journey possible.

This is the most beautiful video! Brian, you and your wife have impacted my life in such an amazing way!!! I'm sitting here eating my WFPBNO lunch while crying watching this video. I'm on this path to wellness because of an emergency gallbladder surgery and because of reaching out to KZread in search of WHAT to EAT to help me lose the weight and get my health back. I had just finished reading Eat to Live when I stumbled across your channel.....and the adventure began! I'm down about 20 pounds and am not looking back. Cutting out the dairy and meat has instantly got me feeling better. I eliminated the oil and fat almost overnight due to surgery and my doctor's instructions. I go back to him tomorrow for my post-op and I can't wait for him to see how much weight I've lost and to see if he tells me I can "reintroduce" the dairy and other crap.....I certainly don't plan on doing THAT! I'm loving my plants and all of the motivation, inspiration, and joy I find on your channel.
